It's so bad that when I hear the sirens go off for a warning, and I grab a lawn chair and a beer!

No, not at all. A couple weeks ago when one went through Brooklyn and Queens they said it was only like the tenth or eleventh time since they started keeping records in the 1950s. It was very unusual to have not just one, but two tornadoes and a macroburst that day.
I grew up in Iowa and we had tornadoes go through the grove in the back of our farm. I was like, "That didn't seem like tornado weather, the sky wasn't the right color, the air wasn't still enough" (about the NYC ones). I guess city tornadoes are different than country ones.

I've never known tornadoes to be common here, but apparently they are occurring more frequently: http://www.nydailynews.co...s_say.html

Yeah, somewhere in Queens. One tornado in Brooklyn, one in Queens, and the macroburst all on the same day. I live in Manhattan was all ", it wasn't that bad." There was also a macroburst 1-2 years ago on the UWS (near where I lived at the time) that destroyed a ton of trees in Riverside and Central Parks.

I was at the office in Manhattan when it happened and thought it was just raining really hard. Then I got home to Queens that evening and saw all the damage.

Me too. The sky got so dark -- which is why I didn't think tornado weather. In my experience, whenever I've seen tornadoes the sky is a yellowish-green color (like an old bruise) and the air is perfectly still.

I've only experienced that once. Back in '96 (or so) I was at my folks' place (central Nassau on Long Island) and suddenly the sky turned that yellowish-green-black color and it started pouring, then hail came down.
Turns out a small tornado touched down a few towns away. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I remember that, in '96. I remember running home from a friend's house when the hail started falling from the sky. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

It touched down in Lynbrook if I remember correctly.
Up until that day, I had always thought of tornados as being a "midwest" thing. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

In Iowa, we had tornado drills twice a year during school. I always hated them.

Neither did I until I arrived into work later this morning, and my co-workers were like "What? You mean you came in?" "I said yes, why? That's when they mentioned there is a tornado watch for all the boroughs of NYC. So I just found out about it around 11:45am. Thanks Shortrini for alerting others. NYC already had one about a 1 1/2 weeks ago, and it did a lof of damage in Brooklyn, and I believe someone was killed when a tree fell on their car. So far it's not too bad, and I'm hoping I get home before it hits, if it does.

Hey, I appreciate it. The last one we had here, about 1/2 weeks ago. I only learned about it, after I was coming out of the subway, and had just missed it. So thanks for alerting others here who may live in the area.

Actually no. I honestly don't remember the last time one hit here. When I heard of the one last week, I was like "Tornado..in NYC? WTF we're getting tornadoes now?". The one we had, less than 2 weeks ago apparently started when I was on subway, coming home from Manhattan to Queens. By the time I came out the subway, it was over. [Edited 9/28/10 13:22pm]

Yes, we had them, too. We had to go to the lower hallway (interior) and crouch down with our hands covering our heads. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
