I used to work for IRS, and yes, they'll put a lien/levy on a taxpayer's $2.00 bank account. I used to type those up when I did an internship with IRS years ago. If IRS ever contacts you on a tax issue, do not ignore their letters, because after a few attempts of contacting you, and you ignored them/failed to respond, they will lock up any funds you have. Once they do that, and then you try to contact them, they do not want to hear it, and will garnish your pay and put a hold on any funds you have until you pay them what you owe. They get you one way or the other. [Edited 2/18/10 13:03pm]

Do sane people fly airplanes into buildings? That's so messed up. First he burnt down his house, apparently so IRS wouldn't get anything from seizing it. Then steals a plane and smashes it into an IRS building. Sounds like a scene from a movie.

He was pretty angry. He owned the plane, although it was first though that he stole it. He might have very well been in a tight place financially, and was desperate. It's a horrible thing, regardless. He's dead, and God knows how many other people are too.

Mine too. Every single grievance, totally legitimate. How many Americans lost their retirement? We are at the mercy of the market for that to build back up. There is no guarantee that there will be any recoup and any loss has happened is the sole "responsibility" of the investor. Meanwhile, we bailed out the banks and they are giving themselves billions of dollars in bonuses. All while people are coming to the point of suicide because it's all so out of control against the average person..... The IRS had NOTHING to do with what you outlined above. This fucking nutcase's problem was with his ACCOUNTANT, who screwed up his tax returns and then bailed on the guy at the last hour. That's happened to me more than once - last year, in fact. My stupid former accountant told me I'd get a nice refund, then on the last day I could file (October 15th) said, "Oh, by the way - I messed up and you actually owe money. And since it was due on 4/15, there's going to be a penalty and some interest to pay". I was pissed, but not at the IRS. At the ACCOUNTANT.

Seriously? How is the example you cite above a bad reflection on the IRS? They do Rodeo. We used to have individuals, every once in a while, protesting outside of IRS on Church St in downtown Manhattan, with signs saying "The IRS took everything from me". I specifically said, "if you ignore their letters, and not contact them to make arrangements at all". I did not say it was a bad reflection on the IRS, and why the hell are you yelling with those big ass caps? They do give taxpayers an opportunity to make payment arrangements. Many people have and do ignore their letters or refuse to pay them. This is why levys/liens were typed up and mailed to them in the first place. Because if someone puts a freeze on your bank account, you have no choice but to contact them. When they do that, IRS will either put a hold on your bank acocunts or garnish your pay, if you don't respond to them;or put a lien on your car if you have one until you contact them. If you don't, they will find a way to get the money owed from you or just seize your assets. I have seen my co-workers obtain "writs" to seize property/valuable assets.(home, car,etc.). Which is basically the last straw when a taxpayer ignores attempts from IRS. These workers get bonuses and promotions for doing that. Just don't ignore any letter from IRS if you owe taxes. I'm not an expert on this, just going my experience during the time I worked for IRS on an internship. My brother also worked for IRS in the Virgin Islands for years, and he was one of those marshalls that carried a gun when he had an order to seize a taxpayer's assets. It's not a nice job. I was expecting a lot of run-on sentences, misspelled words, and bad grammar. It's actually fairly well written compared to most of the things I read on the internet. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I get the point why he crashed the plane into the building. It made him a celebrity and brings attention to his cause. (not that I'm an advocate for that or anything). I think the guy was just frustrated with his life and feels the IRS and the government is part of the reason he has had hard times in life. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

One less thing for the IRS or the local government to tax. The PDF is interesting. He has some decent points in there. He's right about people who rail against the government being labeled as crackpots, when in fact, we'd ALL like to rail against the discontinuity in the government and how it's run. While I don't agree with him destroying two buildings (including his home), and leaving a wife and possibly children (although they might be grown), I can understand his utter frustration with things, and how anger can build up. Despite him saying he felt it was futile to write the letter, and felt he couldn't come up with the words to convey his feelings, I think he was actually rather smart. They way he delivered his message, and the words and styling he used wasn't the mind of a mad man or someone criminally insane. It was from someone who had more than a bit of smarts in his head, and had done more than just a passing glance's worth of research into laws, tax codes, etc. In short, he could form a sentence and successfully transmit the thoughts in his head, and the message he wished to build. I would rather him be a fighter for the little man. People balk at Ralph Nader, but Nader fought enough to get certain things in this country as a standard and a status quo, for the good of the people. At least, in a few regards, Nadar fulfilled Gandhi's statement of "We must be the change we wish to see in the world." I have a feeling that with a different motivation and mindset, Stark could have been the same fulfillment of Gandhi's creed.

Plane Crash Suspect's Online Diatribe Posting rages at IRS, claims, "I have had all I can stand" FEBRUARY 18--The man suspected of intentionally crashing an airplane into a Texas office building today appears to have posted a lengthy online diatribe attacking the Internal Revenue Service and declaring that, "I know I'm hardly the first one to decide I have had all I can stand." The six-page manifesto, which you'll find below, is dated "2/18/10" and is signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)." Andrew Joseph Stack, 53, has been identified as the man who flew a small plane into an Austin building housing IRS offices. The statement was uploaded to the front page of a web site that was registered in 2003 by a Joe Stack, who listed an address in San Marcos, Texas, which is about 35 miles south of Austin. The online posting is titled "Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man... take my pound of flesh and sleep well." Cached versions of Stack's web site, which described his software development consulting business, noted that he founded the firm in southern California in 1983, and eventually relocated to the Austin area to "lend a hand to the growing high technology industry in South-Central Texas." Alex Melen, whose firm hosts Stack's site, told TSG that Stack last changed his web site this morning at 10:12 AM (Eastern). His Piper Cherokee crashed into the Austin building at around 11:30 AM (Eastern). Until Stack uploaded his suicide note, his site consisted of a handful of pages describing his business, Embedded Art, and its history. A screen grab of the previous front page of Stack's site, which he backed up Tuesday afternoon, can be seen here. Melen said that Stack paid his annual hosting fee with a credit card, and last year changed his billing address from San Marcos to an address on North Mopack Expressway in Austin. Prior to speaking with TSG, Melen said he had been contacted by FBI agents in Austin and New Jersey, where his hosting business is located. At 2:40 PM today, Melen deleted Stack's web site at embeddedart.com. He replaced it with a statement noting that, "This web site has been taken offline due to the sensitive nature of the events that transpired in Texas this morning and in compliance with a request from the FBI."
