damn. Being a white girl living in a pretty much white area, i have never experienced anything like this, Kim. but being a thinking and compassionate human being - it makes me downright ill.

Why are people so intent on hate and division and fucked-up antiquated ways of thinking???

Miss Kim, i don't know you, but i wish you and your family the very best. May peace and safety be all around you.
Would u run 2 me if somebody hurt u, even if that somebody was me?

Because it gives them a false sense of superiority('us' vs. 'them').

Yup, same difference. I lived in Rocklin for a while, and I've lived in the Auburn/Colfax area. Beautiful, beautiful country, so close to Tahoe, but, damn if those people aren't stuck in the 1800s, huh? lol The further you go into the foothills, the more backward they become, toothless and all.

yes, you're 100% right, no one seems to have teeth here either! lol how funny!

yeah, it's beautiful here, and we used to love how close it was to drive up to tahoe. but they are really stuck in the 1800s! these old gold mining towns...hehe!

Good luck in finding a place, it sounds like a hell hole.

That's a very sad situation to have to be in in 2009. I would agree with Painted on some points - try and brazen it out if they see you standing up for yourself they may back off, but if you have tried to stick up for yourself and it is not working; you and your husbands safety and wellbeing are the most important thing so maybe a move is needed.

If you do move, choose your new location carefully because as someone else posted (can't remember poster) there are racists everywhere.

Do you have any family that you can move closer to, so you have some support?

Vegas sucks too.....since it is in the middle of a Red State

lived there 2 years and it felt racist.....they like to keep a certain element out (away from the tourists)

the place you live in sounds familiar

my uncle lives in Mountain View, CA and says it is a racist gold mining town and he also is getting the hell out of there as soon as he can find a better job

good luck

never look back either but you should light the town on fire before you leave

eek

The past has been terrible, but not only for the Aboriginals, mostly for the Europeans that migrated by ship to this forsaken land and were rejected by the whites. I was a victim of racism throughout high school, and that was the 90's. It will never stop because racism breeds racism.

As for the Aboriginals, they receive a pension from birth, they have been given their holy land back to them, and the country has apologised to them for cruelty suffered in the past numerous times. It's enough when one minority of Australians are given rights and privileges that are not available to others.

And still the statistics remain as follows:

Average unemployment is 35%

60% earn less than $12,000 a year

60% leave school before year 10 of high school

25% of those between 15-24 years-old have been arrested at least once in the past five years

Between 1994-1997, an increase of 20% in the number of young Aborigines in detention.

If you're getting at what I think you are, then I'll just have to say as politely as possible that you don't have any idea what you're talking about. What I'd prefer to say in response to your post would probably be deleted, so I'll refrain.

The damage wrought by years of racist institutions, policy, and culture does not just disappear overnight with an apology. All those numbers you mentioned are symptomatic of a people badly damaged, not one that is priviledge or being given "special rights". Only an ignorant fool would think otherwise.

yeah, i have friends and family that live in las vegas, not sure if i would want to move there or not? but in may we are going there for a visit to see friends. it's been years since i've been there, and my husband has never been there before.

my grandparents have lived in carson city nevada for over 30 years, it's not too far from lake tahoe and reno, but i don't like it there.

i didn't know that about Mountain View, i've never really spent any time there, only driven through, but it doesn't surprise me. confused

like i said before, we've given this town over 3 years of trying, and we're done, so it's best to move.

i do have family in the sacramento area, and friends, the area we are looking for a place is much more diverse and i am really looking into the neighborhoods. smile

i want to thank everyone that left messages of support for our family! we really appreciate it! grouphug

to the people that think we shouldn't move and just stay here to prove a point and not let the racist people win. well, we've tried that, we've lived here for 3 and a half years trying to ignore it, because it's a beautiful area to live, and we didn't want to move just because of some ignorant folks. but now it is to the extreme, it's gotten to where we are in the supermarket and people start making comments with my 4 year old son there, and my husband getting tickets from the local racist police for not even doing anything wrong, and i feel it's just at a dangerous point. we have a son, and i just don't see the point of putting ourselves through more stress? moving to me just seems more logical and best for our family right now.

but once again i thank you all for your support and advice, it really does help in a rough time like this! grouphug

yep! i wrote a civil rights org. in sacramento about what's been happening to us, and this is their response to my letter:

"dear mrs. lira,

we here at the american civil rights institute have been aware of several cases of racism and injustice in not only your city, but your county. from past experience i would recommend that you first move to a city several miles away from amador county. then we will go from there, it is not safe at this point for you to continue to live where you are, and it's not safe to file a complaint until you are moved safely from the area. are you able to move at this time? do you have the finances to move, i would as soon as you are able. if not, maybe you can find someone to borrow from for the move. please keep me informed, and we will do our best to help you once you move. i would help you now, but where you live is not a safe area. but be sure i have kept your e-mail, and if something else occurs before you move, please let me know! and i can further assist you.
