exactly, considering the response is coming from someone who isn't Australian nor likely has ever lived here

confused

I was never a slave either . . . but as a Black man in America, well that speaks for itself.

But are you really trying to tell me that I have to live in Australia or go there to know racism exists there?

There are no movies, books, documentaries, personal accounts, newspaper and magazine accounts to provide evidence of racism in Australia?

You can't really be suggesting experience is the only way to acquire knowledge?

so what you are really saying is don't move because no country in the world is free from racism.

Australia has gone to great lengths to rectify any wrong-doings with the native owners of the land and as far as i can see there is allot more acceptance in aus than their is in the states of other nationalities.

its not the 1950-60's anymore...

Shit if that was me I'd be tonk my husband on the front porch! Let them see why/how I love my beautiful husband. Home is what you make of it, don't let others decide that for you... if you start running you always be running... racist people are everywhere. Ignorance and intolerance can be found in any neighborhood. rose Stay strong, for you and especially your children.

Oh, and return those notes they leave on their cars.. "You left this note on my car bitchass."

I agree with this and well said miss. I'm sorry Kim you have to go through that racism unfortunately is still alive even though progress is made slowly but surely , and hopefully will continue to be made. Stay strong!

If all else fails, you're welcome to come up here. We're not free of racism either, but it's not as bad as the U.S., at least.

i want to thank everyone that left messages of support for our family! we really appreciate it! grouphug

to the people that think we shouldn't move and just stay here to prove a point and not let the racist people win. well, we've tried that, we've lived here for 3 and a half years trying to ignore it, because it's a beautiful area to live, and we didn't want to move just because of some ignorant folks. but now it is to the extreme, it's gotten to where we are in the supermarket and people start making comments with my 4 year old son there, and my husband getting tickets from the local racist police for not even doing anything wrong, and i feel it's just at a dangerous point. we have a son, and i just don't see the point of putting ourselves through more stress? moving to me just seems more logical and best for our family right now.

but once again i thank you all for your support and advice, it really does help in a rough time like this! grouphug

Honestly, I stumbled upon a blog frequented by military folks (active, reserve and retired) and my hair stood up on end...some were straight up about how they felt, and others crafted covert masterpiece posts out of tried and true code words from the past...and I have this fear (which I'm praying is completely unfounded) that when I start peeling this onion, its going to expose much more division that I could have ever imagined....and the really scary part is that the young ones are the worst ones...on both sides of the equation...

oh yeah....how ya been, missy? wave hug

Kim, I feel bad for you and your husband. I would move also. In NY these guys killed an ECUARDORIAN and some Black Guy was Beat Up after OBAMA won. It's Crazy-RETARDED SICK. And some 300 pound guy attacked an Elderly couple with a knife and a Chinese woman. People have lost their minds lately and much better to have a PEACEFUL LIFE OUT OF there IMMEDIATELY. To be made to feel INSECURE or ASHAMED of ONE'S HERITAGE,RELIGION,SEXUALITY or COLOR is HORRENDOUS and SHOULD NEVER BE ACCEPTED. Contact an ORGANIZATION that handles HATE CRIMES or DISCRIMINATION.
[Edited 1/29/09 22:28pm]

yeah, my husband had contacted an organization in sacramento that helps with hate crimes and discrimination, and they knew already about how bad our town is. and even they said we need to move, that this town is too crazy for anyone that's not white. confused

I believe you. I used to live up in Northern California, half hour above Sacramento, and that town was WHITE!!!! I mean, I could count on one hand the minorities who lived there. I found it really suspicious that the cops always seemed to pull over people of color amd/or crappy looking cars. It wasn't just a coincidence after a while.

They make no bones about what they want. They want their little towns to stay the same, and they do not want anybody who is different coming up past a certain point. It is beautiful there, you're right. But they won't accept you guys no matter what you do. I say move.

there are civil rights groups in the sacramento area, we have talked to some of them, but they have given us the advice to move first, because if you file a complaint while living at the same place, it just causes them to pick on you even more. so that's one reason we're trying to move.
