My prays go out to the families of these earthquake victims and I hope the children and teachers are rescued quickly. There's been a lot of earth rumblings in Italy, with the recent volcano eruptions and now this earthquake. Any experts out there that could share some light on what's happening over there?

My prayers are also for the rescue and safety of everyone. i've read reports from "experts" who have stated that eruptions of volcanoes trigger earthquakes. If Mt Vesuvius or Mt. Pelee erupt it has been suggested that California will have a massive earthquake within three months. Being forewarned is to be forearmed.

ROME, Oct. 31 — At least three children were killed Thursday after the roof collapsed on a school following a strong earthquake that rocked central and southern Italy, rescue workers said. Emergency officials were scrambling to dig through the rubble where about 50 children — aged betweeen 3 and 6 years old — were believed to be trapped.

TWENTY CHILDREN and one teacher were rescued from the school in San Giuliano di Puglia and taken to nearby hospitals, said police and firefighters in Rome, who were coordinating the rescue effort.
RAI state television said eight of the 20 children rescued were critically injured.
Confirmation of the reports was difficult because phone lines around the region were down as a result of the 5.4-magnitude quake, which struck at 11:33 a.m.
A firefighter who asked not be identified said the bodies of three children had been pulled from the rubble of the school while RAI television said four children had died in the incident.
The village of 1,195 people is near the epicenter in Campobasso, about 50 miles northeast of Naples and about 140 miles southeast of Rome.

AFTERSHOCKS
“It was a tremendous explosion,” said Giuseppe Moffa, an official at the regional president’s office in Campobasso.
Two aftershocks with magnitudes of 2.9 and 3.7 also had their epicenter around Campobasso, said Marco Ludovici, an official with the Civil Defense department in Rome.
Hospitals as far away as Foggia, 45 miles to the east, were offering blood to the Campobasso region, hospital officials said.
Schools were evacuated in at least three towns in the region, and in the city of Isernia, about 15 miles from Campobasso, the Italian news agency ANSA said.
Panicked residents rushed into the streets, the civil defense said.

ETNA TREMOR
The quake tore huge chunks of plaster from ceilings and left gaping cracks in walls, Italian news reports said.
Also Thursday, a 3.7 magnitude quake hit Mount Etna, the Sicilian volcano which began erupting Sunday. No damage was reported.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology in Rome said the quake in central Italy and the one shaking Etna did not appear to be connected.
In 1980 an earthquake in the area of Naples killed 2,570 people and left 30,000 homeless in the southern Campania and Basilicata regions.

According to the Italian newpaper "La Repubblica" there have been five deaths recorded already...four children and one woman...
