OKAY, NOW I'M GETTING CONFUSED AND MAD, IN WHAT WAY IS BRITNEY'S "SLAVE 4U " SOUND LIKE VANITY 6?

the beginning of "slave" does sound like the intro to "nasty girl", but after that i just don't hear it. are there any other vanity 6 songs that "slave" is supposed to sound like? and i heard the radio d.j. say it sounded like something else, something like "horse in the sunset" or something with probably horse or sunset or sun in it. i don't know. but can somebody please clear this up for me? thank you.

I don't think they sound too much alike either. It's just that other people think so. But it kind does have that same flow and rhythm. But for fuck's sake, they do not sound alike!!! And I'm pretty sure The Neptunes were not intent on copying Prince either.

You know what's even worse, people actually compare the sound of Kelis' "Milkshake" to Nasty Girl. That's also a bad comparison. Man, I don't understand people's ears sometimes. disbelief

Whether it sounds like "Nasty Girl" or not, Prince's influence is all over that song to anybody who has delved deeply into his and his protege's catalogs.

Don't get mad.

Learn it.

Live with it.

Make it a part of your life. biggrin

I think its because the whole vibe of the song is very MPLS. Coupled with the fact that the beat is similar in sound to nasty girl, help top the arguement.

It's just the beat. That's all. It's almost the same rhythm and sounds. That's it.

the songs don't sound exactly alike ,but if you put all 3,nasty,slave,and milkshake together consecutively on a cd,you will see that "nasty" is the blueprint for the other 2."slave" and "milk" would not exist w/out "nasty".

Yeah, it's not a total ripoff, but the instrumental is pretty darned purple. If it weren't for Britney's Minnie Mouse-on-ecstasy vocals, it'd be a funky, little cut, actually.

"Boys" sounds more like "Nasty Girl" I think she says "My own little nasty world" in Slave right?

You answered your own question! The intro, which is mainly the drum machine beat and bass line... sound like the ones used in Nasty Girl.

This is just like the can of worms I opened with "Toxic". A snippet, or musical riff etc... can be "borrowed" from another song... yet the new song can still be completely different as entire entity.

It's also possible that the similarity was un-intentional... although someone pointed out the Neptunes did these songs (I dotn' really know myself) and they are big Prince fans, so it would be likely they consicously or unconsicously may have introduced a Purple Phrase here or there.

On this board, everything sounds like Prince. Because we love Prince, we hear him everywhere. I'm sure you ask the average Joe on the street to listen to the two songs and note comparisons and he'd go "huh"?

That may be true for some people... but I personallly gave up on Prince around the NPG era. (I probably shouldn't even admit that on here)

But what I've been pointing out at least, is just hearing similar elements. I do that with other songs and music too.

You're right.. the average Joe wouldn't say the songs sound the same...unless he was very familiar with "source" song. If you know a song inside out...maybe have tried to play it by ear etc... you get familiar with little phrases and beats... so when you hear them appear in another song you recognzie them. That's all.

That doesn't mean they're the same songs, and it doesnt' mean you're a Prince Fanatic looking for Purple in evertyhing you hear. As someone else pointed out, some people are just more sensitive to hearing these things.

Oh no, I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just thought it was an interesting irony.

"I'm A Slave 4 U" is completely derivative of many things that have come before it (including a heavy dose of "Nasty Girl", which is also present in "Boys"), but then so is everything else the Neptunes do these days.

I too love to compare songs and find similarities. It's fun to figure out who ripped off who (and it's hilarious when people deny that they did - like Vanilla Ice in 1990).

If only she could sing and/or had a brain, pop fans might have something enjoyable to listen to. I do like "Toxic", though. Mainly because Cathy Dennis co-wrote it, though, and she has a knack for addictive pop songs.

I believe "Slave" was very intentional. This is the neptunes, you know. Take Britney's err.."vocals" away and it sounds almost indentical to "Nasty Girl". The same goes for another song of hers, "Boys".
"Milkshake" is simmialr to "Nasty Girl" but not an out-right rip off. They both have a "jungle" beat but it's not indentical, like "Slave". "Mlikshake" could've been done without ANY knowledge of "Nasty Girl". There was no blueprint for "milkshake".

As far as "Toxic" goes, yeah, it sounds simmilar to "Automatic", but I've heard that same sound in other songs. I don't think it was intentional at all. The neptunes didn't produce it, so I'm guessing that whoever wrote the song doesn't even have any idea about "Automatic".

"Toxic" was co-written by Cathy Dennis!? I love her. I had her album "Move to This" on cassette, but it got destroyed

They sound just alike to me and that's the reason I like Britney's song. Even my non-Prince fan friends say that.

Yes she was cool.

Did yo know she wrote that lovely (yet will-never-go-away) "Theme" to American Idol? Unless they changed it this year... watch the credits and you'll see her credit.

well thanks for clearing this up for me. slave is my fave song of 2001, after that i definetely kept an ear out for ms. spears. i'm by no means a fan, but if you like a song, and i was a big neptunes fan since the first kelis album. i guess they can sound alike, but let's just say P started a trend with "jungle beats", among other things. just another testament to his genius. i think the reason that synth line in "automatic" and "toxic" sound alike because they both end in "ic". no i'm joking. but because they are in the same octave, the notes are arranged differently, but they sound the same because they're so high. just my 2 cents.

well I know an artist only get sampling credit if at least 7 notes or more are sampled and when it somes to a writing credit, that's debatable. Nasty Girl is most likely not the only sing written with that line in it
