Summer of 83---what are your memories from twenty years ago?

Remember these songs from the summer of 1983?

"Every Breath You Take" by The Police
"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" by Eurythmics
"Photograph" by Def Leppard
"Promises,Promises" by Naked Eyes
"Cold Blooded" by Rick James
"Just Be Good To Me" by the SOS Band
"She Works Hard For The Money" by Donna Summer
"Juicy Fruit" by Mtume
"She's A Beauty" by The Tubes
"Flashdance...What A Feeling" by Irene Cara

Of course,Prince was still going strong with his '1999' album. And Michael Jackson fever was everywhere. The "Flashdance" movie was a huge hit.I remember spending this whole summer watching alot of MTV.Anybody else wanna share their musical memories of this exciting summer?

The summer of 83 was fanastic for me. I just turned 20 and I was just getting into Prince. I had heard of the guy before and knew he had some rather risque music out, but it was the summer of 83 that I really got into him and discovered his musical genius.

Oh, yeah! MTV. The best thing to happen to a bunch of teenage girls(my sisters and me). I was thirteen about to turn fourteen, graduating as class valecdictorian and then off to work my first summer job. The songs that come to mind for me then are:

Electric Avenue-Eddy Grant
Atomic Dog-George Clinton
True-Spandau Ballet
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me-Culture Club

Gosh, do I miss those days!

I was 5... so gettin' ready for my first day at school and 1999 was the first time I was really aware of Prince. Actually as a really young kid I preferred the Bangles and played my 7" walk like an Egyptian till it cracked right up the middle.

Hell yeah!
Breakdance was the thing.I went 2 see "Breakdance the movie"
twice along with "E.T" & "Return of the Jedi".
"Thriller" was on my turntable.
My brother & his friends built their own
radio transmitter & broadcasted their show "Radio Break"
with the cool soul & funk sound of that time
like Zapp & Culture clubs "Miss me blind".
Happy times!!/peace Manki

Oh man, MTV & Atari!
Now I know you will laugh, but 2 of

Summer of '83 were:

Mr. Roboto -Styx
&
Is There Something I Should Know? -Duran Duran

83. I was a senior in HS. I was gettin some. Anywhere and everywhere. I was a HO.

I was on a syndicated dance show called "The Dance Show". I was winning dance contests, I was the king of the teen disco. (yeah, big fish in the little pond). I lived on the freak artsy block of the city, where it was nothing but musicians, poets, artists and junkies.

Those were the days before AIDS hit the mainstream. Good time to be alive.

Sigh.

***'Staying Alive' movie---I remember going to see this sequel to 'Saturday Night Fever' but it wasn't very good.In fact,it was really dumb.Cool Bee Gees soundtrack though (Cloudbuster, are you listening??).

***Earlier,I mentioned the Def Leppard song "Photograph".Since starting this thread,I've been playing that song all day long...
"...oh ohhh...look what you've done to this rock and roll clown...oh ohhh...look what you've done"smile

***Shalamar "Dead Giveaway"---who remembers this song?

Summer of '83

I was only 11 at the time and i remember getting into David Bowie's music.
he had just released Let's Dance and was going on tour (serious moonlight tour) i wanted to go to the concert with my brother, but he had just broken his arm and therefor couldn't watch over me during the show.
so my parents didn't allow me to go.
but it still was a great summer and year.

I went to basic training and Prince saved my life...I ruined the cassette of 1999 that's all I played. I saw him on Good Friay that year at the Oakland Colliseum Triple Threat Show.

after basic I remember working the night shift and knowing at 1 am MTV would show Little Red Corvette and at 330 1999. He was on lheavy rotation and every 3 or so hours they would play Controversy or sexuality.

I would have Prince parties and we'd listen to him and watch videos because I had just gotten my first VCR

Going to the club wearing a Prince button everyday changing buttons to match what I was wearing...

I have vague memories of 1983. I was only 1 years old, but over the years, My family told me that I lived in Florida for a bit then moved back to New York. But the most important memories of that time was the music that was hip. And I'm sure all of you will agree that even if was 1983, that was back when music was MUSIC!!! That was when some cable station called MTV (Music Television) appeared. My Grandfolks had it so I would be sooo happy to visit them and their big screen T.V. I remember dancin' in my Pampers to the sounds of Rock like David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Van Halen and Rod Stewart. Then you had Jazz artists like Al Jarreau and Herbie Hancock. Then I used to jump around to my favorite genre, New Wave. You had guys like Duran Duran, Culture Club, Talking Heads, The Police (they were THE Band of '83), among others. Then I had to groove to the R&B & Dance stuff like Lionel Richie, Madonna, Michael Jackson (He RULED music, don't front), New Edition. And that's when I discovered this other guy. He was this short brother with curly hair, who rocked a purple trench coat and could play guitar, sing and dance like no other. Y'all know who I'm talking about...

One of my favorite years (along with 84 and 85) I guess the musical memory that stands out the most is me and my boys cruising down I-80 on the Nemitz (the part that collapsed in the 89 quake) in Oakland and listening to KSOL play 1999 in its entirety. This was before the album came out and the only song we had heard was 1999 single. DMSR came on and I about drove the car off the freeway the beat was so damn NASTY! One of my boys yelled out "Oh Shit!" a few seconds after the keyboard came in at the start of the jam. Nothing like hearing that song and album for the first time. I knew right then, this cat was going to come with some new shit unlike anything we had heard before. The rush of knowing it was the beginning of something fresh is something I haven't felt since. Damn P, we miss you man sad

OK, in Oz it was winter, when u had summer.

Thanx DavidI - u've jogged memories of Sweet Dreams, Police and 1999.

I was 11-12 and getting really xcited about music 4 the first time. Music began 2 make me aware of sexuality and vice versa. Couldn't separate the effects of the new feelings from the bass-line and those from the testosterone. Wow!

Remember back when KSOL used to play entire albums every night at Midnight? They played the entire '1999' album on Thanksgiving night,1982.Then,because the response was so great, they played the entire album again on Christmas Eve,1982.Do you remember that? Those were the days.

Yep. KSOL was my shit. I had moved out to Sacramento by 80 but used to go down for weekends and hang with my boys going to Warrior and A's games all the time. So many of my memories from 82-85 took place in the East Bay. Remember Cameron Paul and his mixes? KBLX? And that weak am station that used to play hip hop (forgot the station id)

Yes,I remember the Cameron Paul mixes.KBLX is still around and they actually play alot of Prince these days. They are the only local station that played his recent single "She Loves Me 4 Me".Not sure about the AM station that played hip-hop,but there was an AM station based in Oakland that played R&B,it was called KDIA.Is that the one you're referring to?

I loved the song "Promises Promises" by Naked Eyes. That was the first summer I went to overnight camp. I was 9. Didn't Return of the Jedi come out that summer too? I remember my dad taking me to see it and I was sooo scared of that monster that attacked a blind Han Solo and Luke Skywalker-remember when Jabba the Hut threw them down and that scary monster came after them...anyway, what else...oh yeah and my mom let me buy my first records!!! I bought Duran Duran RIO, Police Synchronicity, and Stevie Nicks, Wild Heart.

For some reason I remember 1984 and on much better...especially when I had my 10th b-day party and my mom took us all to see the karate Kid and just about every slumber party I went to we all dressed up and pretended we were Madonna.
Let the rain come down...17 days....
