I just remembered, LaToya did have a hit in the USA with Heart Don't Lie that she did with Howard Hewett. Howard also did background vocals on Janet's 1st album, and Jeffrey Daniel was in the Bad video.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think Billy Ocean got the pop success than Jermaine (& El Debarge) never really did. Billy sold lots of albums in addition to having Top 40 pop hits, Jermaine had more success with singles than albums. Probably why Jermaine's albums went out of print for a long time, and most of the Motown ones still are and never have been on CD, not even in Japan. A few have been bootlegged, but not official. Billy was not quite as big as Lionel Richie in the 1980s, but not that far behind him.

Actually I would argue Jermaine had success too in the early 80's, and he and michael were my favourite jacksons in childhood, until I discovered janet later on, and feel it's criminal she doesn't get her due. Some of jermaine's 80's jams if you take away the synthesizers and that god awful orange jumpsuit in dynamite have stood the test of time if you ask me.

The others definitely had success too, and janet too before control. The fact she was an actress and made a very small impact at the time, was probably a big feat though her acting took precedence then. I feel more than ever it's inaccurate when they call her first few albums flops and control her big success. She may have not mattered to top 40 radio and pop culture in 1984, but she mattered to a population of women of colour as an all around triple threat, and as a young role model/teen idol , so to say she flopped then and she is "flopping" now is an inaccurate statement.

I said Jermaine to a lesser extent. wink Remember, Tootie had a fit because she couldn't go to the Jermaine concert on The Facts Of Life. razz But he never reached the same level of popularity as Mike & Janet. Jermaine was more popular with the R&B audience than the pop audience. I don't think Jackie, Randy, & LaToya albums did much business, Marlon's was a minor hit. Marlon did produce an album for Betty Wright and co-wrote wrote a song for Barry White. Maybe LaToya had a few club hits in Japan or somewhere in the early 1990s, but that's about it. LaToya's more like a Zsa Zsa Gábor kinda famous, like a name who gets media coverage. But Zsa Zsa is not really popular for her movies and acting.

I agree Latoya was the first Paris Hilton/Kim kardashian of her generation. I have to admit several of her songs are guilty pleasures particularly from the first album though she can't sing worth a lick.

I don't even think Beyonce goes with those other artists, she is a generation ahead of them all, sandwiched between janet and the rest

She is a visual artist who always had consistent music videos, and actually has talent.

How is she big like them? Well, she was inspired by them which was never a big secret, and starting at same time as britney probably worked to her advantage, with britney and beyonce being the baby madonna and janet for their generation. And cause she has an old school vibe too stemming from her boot camp training from early age, the older crowd likes her, and hip hop being predominant as a genre, expands her audience more.

She and her handlers are clever at marketing and have studied everyone and their mother's career and could have very well written the idiots guide to not ruining your career.

Fan or not, she is one of the few who has lasted 20 years on a mainstream and been consistent. It doesn't make her biggest star ever, but a consistent one.

And actually I prefer solange over her, but that's just me.

This is especially true whether its from Madonna and Janet Jackson to Britney Spears. Say whatever you want about her talent, but its very apparent that there is little doubt every female solo star after

her has specifically tried to avoid Spears' missteps. I would say she's probably the only 21st Century music star who's music career cannot be separated from their personal affairs.

Jermaine's singing style, music, & image is like more of a crooner style like Billy Ocean, Freddie Jackson, or Glenn Jones. None of them are dancers either like Mike & Janet. Billy does a few moves though, but it's not really choreography. I think when Jermaine got on Arista, Clive Davis tried to make Jermaine into a male Whitney Houston. The music was sometimes similar, and they did several duets. A lot of Jermaine's singles are the kind of music they would show on Midnight Love & Video Vibrations on BET or the early years of VH-1 when it was a video channel for adult contemporary videos. His first big solo hit in the 1970s was a ballad, Daddy's Home.

I agree with both... It was always interesting to me that Janet and Madonna had better music but Whitney & Mariah were much better singers

Nah I disagree with that. Whitney has better stage presence and charisma than Nadonna and Janet. Mariah is the one who is not the best in stafe

Disagree totally, did you ever see Houston in concert? I did 3 times, and she is the most boring concert performer I have been to see. This so called stage presecne and charisma ?... doesn't translate into a great concert performer.
