What Kind Of Writer Is Frank Ocean?

Four authors unpack the singer’s literary aesthetic.

Nice record.

My favorites: Godspeed, Nikes, Futura Free, Ivy, Self Control, White Ferrari

A bit stripped down and mellow than Channel Orange, more use of electric piano, Frank obviously wanted to create some sort of a dreamlike vibe/atmosphere and he sure got the right guys for it (James Blake, Bon Iver, Greenwood).

His songwriting is truely unique guys, this man basically gives no fuck about the diverse song structures we know, trying to create new ones and whether you have the impression that they're actually complex and original or just some random recording techniques all put together, his songwriting remains light years 'different' from his peers. I knew that when I first heard Pyramids.

He's a great storyteller, that's a common trait of all great songwriters. He stands out for his storytelling because we rarely find that on top 40 radio. Through his songs you get a picture that includes all of the five senses. The musical arrangements like in Night (which feels like 2 songs after that jazzy piano) and his voice (which has significantly improved) all add up to create a visceral effect. I don't think he wanted to create a dream-like atmosphere, the feeling I get from this album is akin to driving at night, he does have a fascination with cars. As far as the theme of the album, I'd say it's mainly about relationships, but also about trying to do his own 'thing' while also trying to make his mother proud. Yes, Pyramids is an epic song, in the truest definition of the word. It can be about a relationship he has with a woman, but it can also allude to Africa, the jewel of the world and how it has been "pimped" out throughout history.

Just heard Endless hmmm. Sounds like a bunch of ideas n interludes bunched together. Most nice enough. Only 1 real "song", the Aaliyah/Isley cover, which is good minus the "he's goin in" adlibs towards the end lol. Blonde is still the jam n will b bumpin that for times to come, Endless, ok but not as much smile.
