I can deal with rock acts selling more in the past but I don't like how when it comes to documenting the genre, it takes precedence over various other genres of music. We black people need to catalog our own history; no sense in relying on others to do it.

Since the rock audience was bigger, of course there's going to be more people writing about it and buying the books. There's supposed to be a movie version of the Motley Crue book The Dirt coming up. On VH1 there's the program That Metal Show. Rock had magazines like Creem, Hit Parader, Spin, & Rolling Stone. There really wasn't anyone writing about R&B acts other than the bigger acts getting featured in the rock mags. There were teen mags like Right On!, Rock n Soul, & Soul Teen, but they're more like Tiger Beat than Rolling Stone. There was a British mag called Blues & Soul.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You need the likes of Rihannia, Beyonce, Bieber et AL for the labels to fund signing acts like Mint Condition, Janelle Money etc. So whilst they are not everyone's cup of tea, they ship major copies and some like Jay Z started out from the bottom and worked his way to be on top. Plus the first Blueprint album is a classic Hip Hop album IMO. Are the top 10s placed upon personal preference or sales etc?. If it is based upon wrecka sales and everything this would be top 10. 1. Adele 2. Beyonce 3. Rihanna 4. Jay Z 5. Kanye 6. Drake 7. Justin Bieber 8. Bruno 9. Katy Perry 10. Taylor Swift Not sure where Sam Smith, One Direction, John Legend et AL would rank in a top 50. I guess we need to take into account ticket sales, merchandise sales, album and single sales, popularity, social media followers etc.

Well this is false. Beyonce has low sales compared to Rihnna, Jay Z, Kanye, Taylor, Katy and even Drake so its interesting you would place her second after Adele. Taylor sells over 10 million albums on each C.D's. Beyonce sales anywhere between 2-3 million max and she is not matching Rihanna, Katy or Drake when it comes to number ones. Beyonce is a big tour act....but so is Taylor and even Adele so I can't say she is more successful when all three can sell out a stadium. I personally would place Taylor, Bruno AND Drake higher on the list. I would place Beyonce, Jay Z and Kanye lower.

Beyonce has 5 #1's to Drake's 2 (his first solo #1 he just earned actually). Although if we're just looking at the 2010's Drake has 2 #1's to her 0.

Beyonce has also sold more albums than Kanye not only since 2010 but overall. However, she's third to last in terms of album sales of the above mentioned acts (above Kanye and Jay, respectively).

In terms of album sales, it' something like this:
1. Adele
2. Taylor Swift
3. Katy Perry
4. Rihanna
5. Bruno Mars
6. Drake
7. Justin Bieber
8. Beyonce
9. Kanye West
10. Jay Z

Kanye has sold more albums than Beyonce. He has sold over 17 million albums world wide according to wikipedia and Beyonce has sold 16 million as a solo artist. So they are roughly in the same neighborhood but he still has sold more but I would give him the edge because his singles do better. Although he has 3 number one singles, I think they are musically roughly the same in terms of popularity currently.

I would rank Jay Z higher than Beyonce because he has sold more albums than her as a solo act. Beyonce has very poor album sells and low number ones. She is not even in the top 5. Beyonce imo ranks at number 10 and she is one of the popular acts of today but when we really look at her receipts compared to her peers like Adele, Taylor, Rihanna, Bruno, etc she is really not as popular as she is often marketed as.

^ Those are her sales as a solo act, yes. There are countless of her peers that have sold more than her. Hell, Pink and even Usher has sold more than her. Usher even has a diamond record and we all know Britney is one of the biggest selling acts ever. Beyonce is all smoke and mirrors.

I am impressed with Adele, Bruno and Rihanna's success. Adele can sell 20 million copies off of one C.D.; Newcomer Bruno had the biggest half time show surpassing even Madonna!! Rihanna has 14 number one hit singles. Those types of feats impresses me.

I love it! I actually went out and purchased it lol Its great. It actually as a lot of old school influences and as a P fan I think you will like it. James Joint sounds exactly like a Stevie Wonder song. It reminds me of MJ too. Same Ol Mistakes reminds me of a David Bowie song and Kiss it Better, Woo and Love on the Brain are other highlights as well. I think its the best album of 2016 so far. I havent stopped playing it since its been released. James Joint is my fav though.

I can't say I agree with that list. For 2 reasons I think. 1, some of theose people I would never co-sign as being the top. In terms of popularity I wouldn't argue that everyone in that list is the top because that's fair to say, but in terms of how good they are, I definitely wouldn't cosider any of them. And 2, some of those artists I don't hate, but that's because I just don't listen to them, so I can't really speak on them being the top since I don't know so I couln't judge them. But realistically, my favorite current artists are all rappers, so I can't be qualified to make a judgement on people I don't pay attention to. Really the only non-Rap/Hip-Hop related artists I really listen to like that is Alessia Cara and Lorde, and I don't even really think I can say Lorde anymore since her album was from 2013.

I just made a rough estimate with Kanye's total sales and got around 15 million. I could have done my math wrong but either way, that would put him and Beyonce in roughly the same league. What Ye also has in his favor are that all of his #1's don't include a featured artist whereas 3 of Beyonce's do.

Overall, it's not even a fair comparison to compare Jay Z's album sales to that of his wife. The former has sold 55 million+ to the latter's 16 million+ as a solo artist. If one were to include the sales numbers of Destiny's Child (17 million+) then that would bring her total up to around 33 million, which still is much less than what Jay Z has sold overall. However, in terms of album sales this decade, she has the advantage over Jay (and Kanye) even though that's faint praise considering that Jay has only dropped one album while she's dropped 3.

Also, I find it funny that the same article on Wikipedia states that she's sold over 100 million albums solo with an additional 60 million from the DC years only to turn around and say that she's sold just a mere 16 million solo sentences later. If you just add the numbers provided, they don't even come close to half of 100 million but then again this Wikipedia...

Talent is beside the point. Popularity is the center of discussion in this topic. That's not to say you can't say which ones you like and dislike but don't let that cloud your judgment.

Given those credentials, the acts I listed fit the bill although you may not quite agree with the order I put them in.

Lorde definitely qualifies since she's released an album this decade but considering that the album is nearly 3 years old and hasn't had a lasting impact, she definitely wouldn't rank in the top 10 of the most popular acts atm.

Well your right. I wasn't trying to compare her to Jay Z. I was correcting you because you said that she sold more than Jay or at least that is what I thought you were trying to say.

Also, I was really comparing Beyonce in the context of her peers specifically,Adele, Taylor, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc and compared to her peers her receipts are very low. The only strength she has is her tours but again Taylor, Adele, Katy all could do stadiums and sell out. So again, she is not really unique in that respect either. I personally think Bruno can sell out a stadium but prefers a intimate closed setting for his strip down shows and chooses to do arenas.

I really like Alessia Cara I think she has a bright future ahead. As far as Lorde, quit hanging out with Taylor and the cool kids and get back to music. Take your craft seriously cuz time waits for no one, especially in the music business.

Agreed.

For the seemingly increasing amount of articles that talk about how overrated Beyonce is, I wonder why no one has yet broke it down to stone cold numbers?

Over the course of a 13 year solo career, Beyonce has sold less than Adele (who has sold more of one album than Beyonce's entire catalog), Katy, Rihanna and Taylor who all haven't been in music as long as her. She has less #1's than Rihanna (14) and Katy (9) and 3 of the 5 #1 singles she does have to her name include a featured artist.

For as much as Beyonce gets hyped up as some godly act, those are some terrible statistics. Even now when record sales are pitifully low, people are still outselling the alleged "queen".

^^^^nod That is why I never miss an opportunity to call her out on her fraudulency because she is beyond overrated when we solely look at the numbers. She only has 5 number ones and she has like 30 grammys, WTF????? She is all smoke and mirrors and manufactured. With the way she is marketed, you would think she has at least sold 50 million WW. I don't think her tours do well because people think she is a good performer. I think her tours do well because she is at a point right now that people will go to her concerts solely based on "her name and who she is". She is a brand and imo a media star no different than the Kardashians. Her music receipts are very low compared to her peers. Not only is she overrated, she is just not "likable" she does a lot of underhanded things.

Exactly.

Also, when it comes to musical ability and stats there's someone out there who can do what she does better.

AS OF 2010:
-Singing: Adele, Bruno, Taylor (Her voice is thinner than Janet's and Madonna's but she knows how to use her's better than Beyonce), Rihanna
-Dancing: Bruno, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo
-Writing: Adele, Taylor, Bruno, Drake, Kanye
-Producing: Bruno, Kanye (who barely produces anymore)
-Instruments: Bruno
-Album Sales: Adele, Bruno, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Taylor
-No. 1 Singles: Rihanna, Katy, Adele, Bruno, Drake, Taylor

Yeah, Beyonce's just dead weight.

^ Great points!!!!Not only that her TV ratings are low as well

* That Lemonade movie that was overhyped on HBO well only 700,000 people viewed it which is pretty low

Both her Super Bowl ratings were low. In 2013, 110 million tuned in for her half time which was 4 million less than Madonna the previous year and 1 million less than the Black Eye Peas the previous year. This year, her Super Bowl rating was the lowest half time viewership in 10 years and only 100 million tuned in compared to 118 million people who turned in to see Katy Perry and 115 Bruno Mars the previous years. If she is the biggest current pop star, shouldn't she have the highest Super Bowl ratings?? The receipts are not adding up.

* Last year where Beyonce unhandedly stole Ledisi's moment at the Grammys ended up to be a waste because it was the lowest Grammy viewership in years.

* The year where MTV gave her that MJ award was the lowest MTV viewership had in years.

So she is not a "big ratings draw" when it comes to television neither. The way she is marketed does not match her receipts. She is not as popular as she is marketed as. Adele, Taylor, Bruno and Rihanna are bigger stars imo. I wish she would just go away I am sick and tired of her.

Yet another thread that wasn't really about her, turning into a Beyoncé bash fest. Like people bringing up Michael Jackson in threads that have nothing to do with him. I guess folks have nothing else to talk about. lol I don't get spending a lot of time talking about someone they don't like whether Madonna, Janet Jackson, etc. and looking up statistics on top of that. It's like the Bizarro (from Superman comic books) of a fanatic.

She is a current act and we are discussing her accomplishments. It perfectly is on topic with the thread. If you don't have anything to pitch in and say stop worrying about other peoples opinion. Who Cares? People can say what they want and just because someone states statistics doesn't mean they "looked it up"

There's no opinion. Nobody knows anything without researching it first or someone teaching it to them. Did you automatically know how to count? So since you said putting up statistics does not mean looking it up, then that means you made up what you said. Even a fortune teller read leaves, a ouiji board, your palm, Tarot cards, or looks at a crystal ball. They don't get the information from the top of their head. lol Also you're worried about my opinion or you wouldn't have responded to what I said in the first place. So that's being hypocritical.

I don't really care if someone likes an act or not, but make a thread to discuss that instead of bringing them up in non-related thread. The OP post did not ask if you like an act or which acts you like, or who is better than who, but who is the most popular? Pretty simple. I said rock band were the most popular in the past, which is related to the topic. I did not say Pink Floyd is better than Teddy Pendergrass, which is not related.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

We went a little off track talking about Beyonce but it was still within the confines of the topic at hand.

Bottom line is she's not as popular as she's promoted. People from this decade alone have had more high charting singles and sold more albums than her. The only thing you can say she's done is sell out shows which is exactly what her contemporaries have been doing so there's no incentive for her in that department.

LOL You DO care because you felt the need to come here and argue what you think people should and should not be talking about. Everything we talked about is associated with the OP topic and question which is asking to rank and examine the popularity of the current acts which is what we were doing before you came and derailed the thread.

I didn't make up anything and I think its weird how I always see you dictating the opinions of others. If you dont want to contribute to the discussion or topic why don't you worry about your own opinions.

Its not hyprocritcal. I am not worried about your opinion. I am trying to figure out why you are dictating the opinions of others in a thread that you are not interested in contributng too. You are purposely derailing the thread for people who are interested in the topic.

There are bunch of MJ statistics and music stats that I can list off the top of my head right now that I don't need to "look up" because I have been following his career all my life and the same with other artists because I love music and music history etc. I dont have to search hard for every statistic I state in my opinion which you implied. You always act obtuse in these discussions and talk down on people like they are retarded its beyond annoying.
