I don't disagree (w/exception of K-Dot). But it depends on how you define top 10 of this generation. Those are the top-10 ACTS. Not MY top 10 ARTISTS. That would be a much different list.

What question are you asking?

Its pretty well known who the popular acts of today are so what question are you asking?

Today acts are uninteresting, generic and are media made. I honestly have no interest in any of the artists on the list besides Bruno and Rihanna (and even they lack in some capacities).

However, Adele and Bruno are the better pop stars of this generation in terms of talent, artististry, consistency and authenticity. They also reach a wider audience and appeal, same with Rihanna imo.

An honorable mention: Rihanna----- she has significantly improved, has a handful of great songs and I was really impressed with Anti which is a much better and more authentic effort than the overrated PR stunt Lemonade. Rihanna imo is underrated and underestimated in some aspects. She is not the greatest singer but she does have a handful of good quality songs and albums that often gets looked over.

Beyonce is the most overrated pop star of all time, no question.

That is what I'm asking.

The point of this topic is to list and rank today's current top stars of this decade so far (as in those who are making music and charting Top 40 songs as of 2010 regardless of if their first album came out in 2016 or 1996). Yeah, I agree that the vast majority of the list are generic media stars who receive far more credit than they deserve but that's kind of what makes this interesting. Add to the fact that half (at least from the list I provided) have careers that span over a decade long and yet are still considered the top stars of this generation, it makes things dicier and shows just how few big new mainstay stars we have now.

I'd put Chris Brown over Derulo and maybe Ariana Grande over Demi Lovato.

I love Ariana Grand but Chris Brown dances better than he sings. I love Ledisi but she needs the right material to put her on this list and I hope she gets her chance.
Jason Derulo dances better than he sings to. He's basically a Chris Brown clone with poppier and even weaker music.

I don't trust Ledisi to go pop with how things are now. The genre of pop these days is a watered down, boring and empty shell of its former self; the lion's share of it has no character.

I think all these acts of today are easily forgettable. They wont have classics, are not legends and icons and they definitly dont have the same iconic moments as MJ, Prince, Madonna etc. MAYBE just MAYBE Adele has a chance of having a classic with her "21" album and MAYBE Rihanna may have a shot because she does have some great bops. Overall, I dont see these artists becoming icons or legends. The golden era of music is definitly over. I think most of these acts are relevant for things that have nothing to do with their music which is sad. There are more acts that deserve more recognition.

This is the popularity ranking of the Top 10, Top 40 acts of today IMO. My popularity ranking is based on record sales, number one hits, tv ratings, tour power, and overall demand as a collective whole). This is not based on my preference but based on receipts on how I feel they rank in overall popularity as music stars.

1. Adele

2.Taylor Swift

3.Rihanna

4.Drake

5. Katy Perry

6. Bruno Mars

7. Justin Bieber

8. Kanye West/Jay Z

9. Beyonce

10.The Weeknd

IMO, some of these stars are more popular than what they are marketed and likewise some of these acts are not as popular as they are marketed and this is based off receipts.

They're lame to you, but not the people who listen to them. How is a Justin Beiber killing the business? His popularity funds the acts you listen to who don't sell much and are not that well known. If the record busines was depending on an act like Mint Condition, who is known to a small niche audience, then that would kill the business as they don't sell enough. You don't like The Beatles and they're the biggest selling act in history and are still popular today, 46 years after they broke up. You also said you don't like country, which has been popular for decades. Milli Vanilli, New Kids On The Block, MC Hammer, and Vanilla Ice has sold more than D'Angelo. New Kids had bed sheets, lamps, a 900 phone number, sleeping bags, and dolls. An act has to be popular to sell items like these. So your taste doesn't sell records. razz

.

Justin Bieber style teen idol acts have always been around and the music business did not die. They were called Frankie Avalon, Troy Donahue, Ricky Nelson, Menudo, Dixie Cups, David Cassidy, Debbie Gibson, Jackson 5, Wham!, Osmonds, Sandra Dee, Pat Boone, etc. Frank Sinatra was a teen idol act in his early career and so was Elvis Presley.

You need the likes of Rihannia, Beyonce, Bieber et AL for the labels to fund signing acts like Mint Condition, Janelle Money etc. So whilst they are not everyone's cup of tea, they ship major copies and some like Jay Z started out from the bottom and worked his way to be on top. Plus the first Blueprint album is a classic Hip Hop album IMO. Are the top 10s placed upon personal preference or sales etc?. If it is based upon wrecka sales and everything this would be top 10.

1. Adele
2. Beyonce
3. Rihanna
4. Jay Z
5. Kanye
6. Drake
7. Justin Bieber
8. Bruno
9. Katy Perry
10. Taylor Swift

Not sure where Sam Smith, One Direction, John Legend et AL would rank in a top 50. I guess we need to take into account ticket sales, merchandise sales, album and single sales, popularity, social media followers etc.

For the mainstream folks, you have Miguel, Adele, Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, Lana Del Rey, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga.

These guys make good, diverse music, put on wonderful shows esp. Janelle and Bruno.

and sorry but I hate Taylor Swift... like, I'm a hater, call me that, I hate her silly, bubblegum guts and I wish she can vanish in one way or another.

As for the indie folks, I am proud to be able to live throughout a generation that has MANY, SO FUCKING MANY GOOD ARTISTS, you name it man, St. Vincent, Kimbra, Grimes, Aphex Twin, Radiohead, Tame Impala, Azealia Banks, Vampire Weekend, Ariel Pink and his haunted wonderful crazy ass Graffiti, Todd Terje, Arcade Fire, M83, Esperanza Spalding, Bon Iver, The xx, Mark Ronson, FKA Twigs, Brooke Candy...

ST Vincent is actually in my opinion the most original musician in this generation, like, literally. Her sound is like no other.

And all these guys, whether they're famous or unknown as fuck... It's their music that matters... we're not living in a generation where you bet on who's better MJ or Prince, or The Smiths or The Cure, or Madonna or Janet... I'm sure they're too buisy handling their craft in a way that keeps them off those silly games. (Exept Kanye West actually...)

nod Isn't Janelle signed to Bad Boy? They became big with Puff Daddy & Mase records. it's similar to movies. The profits from blockbuster movies fund smaller movies and "art films". People here like to trash these modern acts, but some of them sell more than a lot of those classic acts. Teddy Pendergrass, Cameo, & P-Funk were not huge sellers like Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, or Pink Floyd. Rock bands were usually the big sellers of the past. That's the reason for some R&B acts trying to crossover to Top 40, to get bigger sales and more popularity. Lionel Richie would not have reached the pop audience doing songs like Captain Quickdraw, but with Three Times A Lady, Say You Say Me and Dancing On The Ceiling. The classic rock acts still get more attention from the labels with remasters and box sets than R&B/soul in which the albums are more likely to be out of print. Rock acts are also written about more. You can find many books on Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, etc.

I can deal with rock acts selling more in the past but I don't like how when it comes to documenting the genre, it takes precedence over various other genres of music. We black people need to catalog our own history; no sense in relying on others to do it.

Well this is false. Beyonce has low sales compared to Rihnna, Jay Z, Kanye, Taylor, Katy and even Drake so its interesting you would place her second after Adele. Taylor sells over 10 million albums on each C.D's. Beyonce sales anywhere between 2-3 million max and she is not matching Rihanna, Katy or Drake when it comes to number ones. Beyonce is a big tour act....but so is Taylor and even Adele so I can't say she is more successful when all three can sell out a stadium. I personally would place Taylor, Bruno AND Drake higher on the list. I would place Beyonce, Jay Z and Kanye lower.
