Cannes Film Festival Planning Prince Tribute

04/25

The Cannes Film Festival is creating a special tribute to honor Prince, a festival representative tells Billboard.

"There will be a tribute to Prince, but [we have] no more information right now," the rep said.

The music icon has had a long history in film and entertainment, winning an Oscar in 1984 for his music in Purple Rain and making a contribution to a number of movie and TV show soundtracks, notably Tim Burton’s Batman, Happy Feet, and Spike Lee’s Girl 6, which was screened in Cannes' "Un Certain Regard" section.

This year's Cannes festival runs May 11 through May 22. For more information on the festival and films being screening go to the festival's website.

Prince's 'New Girl' Episode Will Encore on Fox Next Week

The icon played himself during the comedy's 2014 special that aired after the Super Bowl.Prince and Zooey Deschanel FOX

The icon played himself during the comedy's 2014 special that aired after the Super Bowl.

Fox will pay tribute to Prince next week, replaying the late icon's 2014 episode of New Girl on Tuesday.

The episode, appropriately titled "Prince," originally ran after the Super Bowl. It marked the second time producers tried to woo the singer, who was a fan of the show, onto the comedy. In the episode, he had heart-to-hearts with leads Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson, performed the track "FALLINLOVE2NITE" with Deschanel and slayed at ping-pong.

"Prince is fantastic at ping-pong, like maybe one of the best I've ever seen," New Girl creator Liz Meriwether told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, "which is amazing because I kind of think you can only be really good at one thing but you can be really good at a lot of things if you're Prince."

New Girl producers were among the many eulogizing Prince after his sudden death on Thursday, releasing the following statement: "We are all so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of this hero of ours and so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him and to have him on our show. It's something we will remember forever. Our thoughts go out to his family. We are among the millions of people who will truly miss the brilliant artist."

"Prince" will air again on Tuesday, April 26, at 9:30 p.m. — in lieu of a previously scheduled Grinder repeat. (New Girl airs two back-to-back original episodes earlier in the night, at 8 p.m.) And it's not Prince's only acting gig to get some prominent recirculation. His Purple Rain will return to 87 AMC theaters over the weekend.

What to watch on Monday, April 25...

SPRING PREMIERE, 8pm, The CW
Reign
As Charles’s coronation approaches in “Succession,” Mary scrambles to ally with a suitable suitor. (And lemme tell ya, 16th century Tinder isn’t much more helpful than the modern version.) In matters of murder most foul, Lola learns who’s been slipping Elizabeth poison, while the castle’s serial killer sets their sights on Catherine.

SPRING PREMIERE, 8pm, CBS
Mike & Molly
Mike brings home a stray puppy in “Weekend With Birdie,” but Molly finds the whole experience weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable.

With Stan away on a mission, Francine pretends that her husband is a grave man in “Widow’s Pique.” Elsewhere, Steve and his friend have a rough encounter with Principal Lewis.

SEASON 2 FINALE, 9pm, CBS
Scorpion
The team matches wits with former Scorpionite Mark Collins in “Toby or Not Toby.” Ranging for revenge, their unstable ex-colleague kidnaps their stable current colleague Toby, threatening to kill him unless they meet his diabolical demands.

British forces put pressure on the rebels in “Under Siege,” bringing woe, destruction, ruin, and decay all around. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, Frances, and Jimmy become enmeshed in the goings-on at the GPO.

Jane picks up some extra shifts to boost her finances, but is pained by the resulting deficit in quality time with Mateo. Meanwhile in “Chapter Forty-One," Jane and Rafael enlist a mediator to help sort out custody arrangements, a newspaper runs an expose on Michael and Sin Rostro, Petra is peeved by a discovery about the twins’ trust fund, and Xo struts and frets her hour upon the stage of Rogelio’s telenovela.

9pm, TBS
The Detour
In “The Restaurant,” the family has little choice but to patronize a culturally insensitive roadside eatery/dinner theater that presents more woeful pageants than the scene wherein they play in.

SEASON 3 PREMIERE, 10pm, AMC
Turn: Washington’s Spies
Abe receives unexpected help covering up a murder in “Valediction,” while Benedict Arnold takes up a new residence in Philadelphia, where he has a giant’s strength but is tyrannous to use it like a giant.

10pm, ABC
Castle
The valiant never taste of death but once, but even that may be an overestimate for a lucky city safety inspector (Jonathan Silverman) in “Dead Again.” After he survives not one (1) but two (2) poisoning attempts, Castle and Beckett determine to solve the mystery of this modern-day Rasputin.

10pm, NBC
Blindspot
“In the Comet of Us” finds the team’s regularly scheduled investigation interrupted by the urgent hunt for college-campus shooter. Meanwhile, Mayfair’s past is prologue to present-day personal problems.

10pm, CBS

“Where There’s Smoke…” sends Sam and Callen undercover as firefighters, in such disguise as haply shall become the form of their intent. They must investigate the theft of top secret info about suspected terrorists from a Pentagon container at the site of a blaze.

10:30pm, TBS
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee
In Germany, Samantha speaks with a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner to ascertain if he’s a man more sinned against than sinning.

Prince Gets Royal Treatment at Carnegie Hall: D'Angelo, Elvis Costello, Bettye Lavette Light Up All-Star Tribute Concert

Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum of Princess perform during the Music of Prince at Carnegie Hall event.
http://static.ebony.com/art_Fitzgerald_Ella032_article-small_24181.jpg

Tribute concerts are a tricky proposition under the best of circumstances. Not only do you need to match the right performer with the right song, you've got to learn an entire repertoire – which, if the tributee deserves an entire concert, is usually challenging on many levels -- in a short time, and somehow find a way to strike that delicate balance between paying homage and being overly reverent; and/or between reinventing and ravaging.

However, when you've got a Prince tribute with Questlove at the helm -- not only the heartbeat of the Roots (the evening's house band) and musical director of "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," but a masterful musician, a world-class networker AND a longtime Prince fanatic who has performed with the man himself – you're in good hands. And it showed at tonight's concert, the ninth in presenter Michael Dorf's annual series, which not only provided a strikingly high percentage of quality performances, it also raised more than $100,000 for several non-profit music-education programs for underprivileged youth.

If the Sound City Players are Dave Grohl's Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, then tonight's concert was Questlove's, because the evening's biggest musical surprise came at the beginning, when a short-haired female guitarist walked onstage with the Roots: Wendy Melvoin – a.k.a. half of the Revolution's Lisa & Wendy – who was soon joined by Prince's longtime saxophonist Eric Leeds. At long last, Quest – who wore a t-shirt bearing the first names of the Revolution's classic lineup – was almost in the band he'd always wanted to be in.

https://static01.nyt.com/images/2013/03/09/arts/09PRINCE/09PRINCE-articleLarge.jpg

The evening started off with a bang, as singer/guitarist Mike Scott and violinist Steve Wickham tore into a blazing version of "Purple Rain" that saw Wickham flawlessly rendering Prince's guitar solo on the violin. From there, the show moved into a template that varied surprisingly smoothly between funk, ballads and comedy.

http://cdn.sandiegouniontrib.com/img/photos/2013/03/07/2aec0ed4-fb04-4b9b-bd36-844c9d1eb0bcnews.ap.org_tx600.jpg?1cac1c26287decec7a3e591fce9b6936b1eddfe5

Fred Armisen did a hilariously nerdy spoken-word version of the intro to "Let's Go Crazy"; later; Chris Rock hollered comically through the odd middle section of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" (clearly reading from a teleprompter, he probably had no idea where the words came from – as his shrug to Questlove as he walked offstage suggested);

http://cache3.asset-cache.net/gc/163350567-singer-kat-edmonson-performs-during-the-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=GkZZ8bf5zL1ZiijUmxa7QXClh0LhxwOL4aY4s2DJyX6eJdfvQaWaI3rQgApG6NO1wVlHvOL2M%2BHTwRRqY2tc0g%3D%3D

Kat Edmonson

an extremely pregnant Maya Rudolph sang several songs with Gretchen Lieberum (her college friend and partner in Prince tribute act Princess) and gave the evening a surreal touch by bumping, grinding and screaming through "Darling Nikki" while she stroked her big belly;

https://cbswcbsfm.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/163315484_8.jpg?w=594

Sandra Bernhardt broke out a hilarious automotive-themed spoken-word intro to "Little Red Corvette" (which she sang like a dramatic reading) that referenced "the little man who chooses to sit alone, naked, under the cherry moon."

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/actor-fred-armisen-performs-during-the-music-of-prince-at-carnegie-picture-id163315378

Those moments were balanced by ballads: Nina Persson of the Cardigans showed impressive range on a beautiful "Nothing Compares 2U"; Bhi Bhiman accompanied himself on guitar for a sparse and slow version of "When Doves Cry" that may not have tickled everyone's fancy but was certainly bold;

http://skeudsleblog.20minutes-blogs.fr/files/Mars2013/d_angelo-wendy_melvoin-carnegie_hall-skeuds.jpg

Citizen Cope and Alice Smith delivered a halting "Pop Life"; and best of all, Kat Edmonson sang a gorgeous and strikingly original take on "The Beautiful Ones"

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/files/img/fp/princetribute/carnegiehall/96.jpg

accompanied by a talented pianist, that saw her singing the first verse low, the second high, and belting briefly at the end (many "Who was THAT?"s were heard from the crowd after she performed).

Even other genres were worked in: The Blind Boys of Alabama brought church harmony to a rousing version of "The Cross"; Devotchka did an impressively reverent "Mountains" that included violin and a full horn section (including tuba); and the inclusion of a children's chorus on Diane Birch's take of "Raspberry Beret" was an inspired touch.

But of course, the funk was what brought the crowd out of their seats. Fdeluxe (a reunited version of mid-'80s Prince protégés the Family, featuring Wendy's twin sister Susannah) tore through "High Fashion" and "Mutiny" and backed Persson for "Nothing Compares" (which they originally recorded); Talib Kweli funked up "Annie Christian" and made it topical by name-dropping Tupac and Biggie before shouting "gun control!"; Bettye Lavette tore up "Kiss" with an old-school bluesy treatment; Bilal – the only repeat performer from the "1999" tribute show that the Roots played at Brooklyn's BAM in 1999 – showed his true calling as a top-shelf Prince impersonator, alternately singing and screeching "Sister" as the tempo shifted between fast and slow.

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/actorcomedian-chris-rock-performs-during-the-music-of-prince-at-hall-picture-id163315204

And noted crate-digger Elvis Costello performed the most obscure song of the night (probably the result of a deep-cut geekout with Questlove), the unreleased mid-'80s song "Moonbeam Levels," which is usually called "A Better Place 2 Die" on bootlegs.

https://cbswcbsfm.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/163315178_8.jpg?w=416

But as great as many of those performances were, there's no question that D'Angelo stole the show – which is hardly surprising, considering that Prince is the cornerstone of his musical being. Displaying the full measure of his spectacular showmanship -- which was so low-key at his own show in Brooklyn on Monday night

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/wendy-melvoin-maya-rudolph-and-gretchen-lieberum-of-princess-perform-picture-id163358239

D'Angelo stomped from one end of the stage to the other, doing the James Brown mic-stand drop, kicking over the piano stool, leading the crowd in sing-alongs and arm-waving, and dropping in lots of sly little moves and ad-libs that showed him to be Questlove's equal in Prince scholarship.

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/bhi-bhiman-performs-during-the-music-of-prince-at-carnegie-hall-on-7-picture-id163358267

The band tore through all of "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" before seamlessly shifting into "1999," which saw them joined by every single one of the night's performers as D'Angelo had the entire crowd shouting "PARTY!"

http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/chris-rock-wendy-melvoin-and-suzannah-melvoin-pose-backstage-during-picture-id163347284

The last notes had barely faded and the musicians were still onstage when the house lights came up -- and it was a good thing, too, because that last performance was so explosive that absolutely no one wanted to leave.

Exclusive: 'Labyrinth' 30th-anniversary release coming in September

Brian Truitt, USA TODAY11:40 a.m. EDT April 25, 2016
12185 14LINKEDIN 3COMMENT MORE

A new 30th-anniversary release of Labyrinth pays tribute to the late Jim Henson but also to its iconic Goblin King, David Bowie.

For those who missed out on seeing it on the big screen in 1986, the film is coming to select theaters around the country Sept. 11 and 14 through Fathom Events. Plus, the fantasy film — directed by Henson, executive produced by George Lucas and scripted by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame — receives a new anniversary edition on Blu-ray, DVD and 4KUltra HD on Sept. 20.

Labyrinth stars Jennifer Connelly as a 16-year-old girl who wishes for her baby brother to be taken away, but then has 13 hours to solve a complicated maze in order to rescue her sibling from the Goblin King played by Bowie, who died in January at the age of 69.

In addition to having legacy content such as a making-of documentary and commentary by designer Brian Froud, the new Blu-ray is a 24-page "digibook" edition with rare behind-the-scenes photos and extras including Connelly and the Henson family discussing Jim Henson's puppetry and filmmaking, an anniversary Q&A hosted by MythBusters' Adam Savage, and a Bowie remembrance by Connelly and Henson's children.

Exclusive content will also be shown as part of the Fathom screenings, and Amazon will have for sale a limited-edition Labyrinth Blu-ray gift set with "mirrorbox" packaging based on the final scene from the film.

What to Watch Tonight: The Season Finale ofLimitless, a Special Airing of Prince's New GirlEpisode, and Fresh Off the Boat

By Andy Daglas

What to watch on Tuesday, April 26...

12:01am, Hulu
The Mindy Project
A fiscally scattershot Mindy enlists the expertise of Jeremy’s ex Whitney to tidy up her books in “So You Think You Can Finance.”

8pm, ABC
Fresh Off the Boat
“Hi, My Name Is…” sees Evan eagerly opening his very first bank account, but he’s torn about using his American name or his Chinese name. That prompts Louis and Jessica to share how they adopted their own American names, and to think back on their first meeting. [Cue flashback ripples.]

8pm, The CW
The Flash
Super-strong metahuman Griffin Grey attacks Wells, thinking that he’s actually Wells even though he’s not Wells but Wells. (Trust me, this makes sense if you watch the show.) As a de-powered Barry turns to Jesse for help rescuing her dad in “Back to Normal,” Wally presses Joe for answers about the Flash.

8pm & 9pm, Fox
New Girl (Prince Episode)
Stinging after his manhood is belittled in front of Cece, Schmidt rounds up the boys for a testosterone-fueled bachelor party weekend in Vegas in “Road Trip.” But before making it to Sin City, they’re waylaid at a biker bar where his newfound machismo is tested. Then at 9pm, “A Chill Day In” finds Jess and Cece taking a decidedly opposite approach to the bachelorette party… until they accidentally ruin the wedding gift from Schmidt’s mom and must find a way to replace it. And at 9:30pm, a repeat of the Season 3 episode “Prince” pays tribute to the recently departed music legend, who once made time to share his romantic wisdom with Nick and Jess.

8:30pm, Fox
Grandfathered
Not wanting to admit he’s 51, Jimmy instead throws himself a second 50th-birthday party in “Jimmy’s 50th, Again.” That inspires him to reflect on his 50th birthday 1.0, and on how much his life has changed in the ensuing year.

8:30pm, ABC
The Real O’Neals
Good news, everyone! In “The Real Wedding,” Kenny has landed a lead role in the school’s production of Zombie Romeo and Juliet! Ehh whaaa? His ex Mimi will be portraying his star-crossed lover in the play? And Eileen, realizing that it may be her only chance to see Kenny marry a woman, takes the wedding scene way too seriously? Never was there bad news of more woe, everyone!

9pm, Sundance
Rebellion
Public opinion swings in favor of the rebels in “The Reckoning," even as English authorities continue to bring the hammer down. At the same time, Frances, May, and Aunt Nellie face a more personal form of persecution.

9pm, ABC
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
More and more Inhumans are signing up for #TeamHive in “The Singularity,” but Fitz and Simmons may have a way to reverse that trend. Now if only they can convince Bruce Banner to go along with their “Get Your Picture Taken With The Hulk!” promotion…

9pm, NBC
Chicago Med
Dr. Manning and Dr. Charles tend to a teenager who’s refusing drugs to treat her abdominal pain, for fear of following in her drug-addicted father’s footsteps. Elsewhere in “Inheritance,” Dr. Halstead treats an old high school classmate with whom he shares a tense history, April is nonplussed to learn her beau and her brother are involved in a business venture, and Dr. Rhodes dodges meeting up with his sister.

9pm, The CW
Containment
Lex has his hands full maintaining control outside the cordon, so he must dispatch a resentful Jake on a mission to track down a possibly infected woman. Solid plan, should do wonders for easing that resentment. Other developments in “I to Die, You to Live” include Teresa reeling from word of her friends’ possible exposure, Katie steeling her spine as she watches over her students, and Jana learning that her BFF Suzy is also on the unfortunate side of the cordon.

SEASON 1 FINALE, 10pm, CBS
Limitless
“Finale: Part Two!” concludes the season with Brian devastated by a betrayal even as he and the FBI hurry to stop an NZT-ified Sands and company from executing their diabolical master plan. Not helping matters: the onset of NZT side effects as Brian’s immunity wears off.

10pm, AMC
The Night Manager
Roper’s blissful Mediterranean idyll on the island of Mallorca is obliterated, because spy dramas tend not to leave blissful Mediterranean idylls, um, unobliterated. Six months earlier, Burr continues to recruit Pine.

10pm, NBC
Chicago Fire
As Holloway testifies in court, her young son continues to hang out with Uncy Severide at the firehouse. Elsewhere in “The Last One for Mom,” Casey receives a suspicious package that sets off alarms at the Board of Ethics, Brett confronts Otis about his slacking off on pressing issues, and Cruz makes a risky decision when the squad responds to a blaze at an art gallery.

10pm, Freeform
Stitchers
The team investigates the murder of a Chinese pop star in “The Dying Shame.” The victim’s bodyguard is the chief suspect—although the fact that she was apparently unconscious at the time of the murder puts a wrinkle in that theory.

10pm, MTV
Awkward.
Jenna must choose between her Idea Bin success and her fragile friendship with Matty in “Girl Gone Viral.” Elsewhere, Jake stumbles into a hookup while Sadie and Sergio expose more than ever.

10:30pm, MTV
Faking It
At a game night, Karma’s rivalry with Amy’s old camp buddy reaches a fever pitch. Let’s just say the words they come up with in Scattergories aren’t suitable for a family website. Meanwhile in “Game On,” Shane can’t make head or tails of Noah’s mixed signals, and Liam tries to keep on Lauren’s good side.

Stop, Look and Listen: Elvis Presley’s Stereos

Every April, the world celebrates Record Store Day, which focuses on vinyl records and the physical shops that sell them. This month’s Gates of Graceland episode shows off a few of Elvis Presley’s favorite 45s.

But what’s a record without a record player?

Elvis loved music, and he made sure you could hear it all over Graceland. He could play selections from his extensive record collection anywhere, whether he was in his bedroom, downstairs in his colorful TV Room, in the Jungle Room and even in his own racquetball court.

Let’s take a look at some of the stereos and record players here at Graceland.

tvroomplayer2

tvroom2

The TV Room at Graceland was really Elvis’ place to enjoy entertainment. In addition to the room’s three TV sets, this room is also home to a stereo, jukebox and record player. Elvis owned thousands of records, and most of them were housed in the TV Room.

At Graceland, music is actually built right into the walls. Check out the jukebox in the TV Room:

tvroom1

It’s easy to spot Elvis’ music in the TV Room, but the record player in the Jungle Room is hidden.

Anyone who’s been inside Elvis’ Racquetball Building knows it wasn’t just used for that sport. It also includes a pinball machine, piano, and this stereo system:

racquetball1

This system is made by Crown International – pretty fitting for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, huh?

A fire destroyed most of the Crown manufacturing facility in November 1971. It was rebuilt as soon as possible, and this stereo is one of the first ones manufactured following that fire.

Another record player that’s housed inside Graceland is the one in Elvis’ bedroom. This is that record player, complete with the record Elvis left on it. That record is an untitled one by The Stamps.

‘Going Clear,’ ‘The Jinx,’ ‘What Happened, Miss Simone’ Named 2015 Peabody Awards Winners

HBO/NETFLIX
APRIL 26, 2016 | 10:55AM PT

HBO’s documentaries scored high marks from the annual Peabody Awards, winning nods for four of its efforts: the Scientology expose “Going Clear”; an intimate exploration of autism, “How to Dance in Ohio”; “Night Will Fall,” about the making of a Holocaust film; and the true crime phenomenon “The Jinx,” about Robert Durst.

These documentary and education winners, including Netflix’s riveting “What Happened, Miss Simone” round out the Peabody 30, the coveted annual awards which are administered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass CommunicationPead

The entertainment and children’s winners, including ABC’s “Black-ish” and USA’s “Mr. Robot,” andthe news, radio and web winners, which included “This American Life” and HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” were previously announced. A full list of winners is available atpeabodyawards.com.

The awards will be handed out on May 21 at a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Here’s the full list of winners in the documentary and education category, followed by description from the judges:

“Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” (HBO)

Jigsaw Productions, HBO Documentary Films and Sky Atlantic

More than an exposé, more like a demolition, Alex Gibney’s film about the history and hardball tactics of the Church of Scientology draws its persuasive power from letters and documents contradicting the fabrications of its late founder, L. Ron Hubbard, and from blistering testimonials by prominent ex-church officials and former members about abuse and corruption.

“How to Dance in Ohio” (HBO)

HBO Documentary Films, Gidalya Pictures and Blumhouse

Filmmaker Alexandra Shiva focuses on three young women in Columbus, Ohio, who are living with autism and facing the daunting prospect of their first spring formal. The power and beauty of this closely observed, intimate documentary is that it doesn’t patronize its subjects or its viewer with easy sentimentality.

Independent Lens: “India’s Daughter” (PBS)

Assassin Films, BBC Storyville, UK-INDIA, and Tathagat Films in association with Gamini Plyatissa Foundation, Vital Voices Global Partnership, DR, Plus Pictures Aps, CBC News Network, SVT, IKON, RTS, SRF and RAI

The internationally infamous 2012 gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old medical student, in Delhi is the impetus for this unflinching, deeply unflattering examination of the misogyny embedded in Indian society.

“ISIS in Afghanistan” (PBS/WGBH)

Frontline

Making the most of a difficult, dangerous assignment, Afghani journalist Najibullah Quraishi and his producing team got deep into ISIS-held territory to document its growing power and appeal in Afghanistan, its conflict with the Taliban and, most unnerving, its indoctrination and weapons training of children as young as 5.

“Listen to Me Marlon” (Showtime)

Showtime Documentary Films Presents, A Passions Pictures Production, Cutler Productions

Thanks to an imaginative director, a collection of audio tapes that Marlon Brando recorded over the years and a voice-synched, holograph-like image of the late, great “method” actor, we get to hear Brando share deeply personal thoughts about how he became the man and artist he was. It’s strange and wonderful, like a CGI resurrection.

“Night Will Fall” (HBO)

Spring Films, Angel TV, and Ratpac Documentary Films in association with HBO Documentary Films

“Night Will Fall” deftly weaves two stories into one documentary tale – one about the atrocities of the Nazi concentration camps, the other about the changing policies of postwar reconstruction that pulled atrocity images in and out of public view. The film artfully shows us an obscure moment in Holocaust history that attests to the enduring power of visual documentation.

POV: “Don’t Tell Anyone” (No Le Digas a Nadie) (PBS)

A co-production of Portret Films, American Documentary | POV And Independent Television Service (ITVS) in association with Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB) with major funding provided by The Corporation For Public Broadcasting (CPB).

An activist on behalf of young, undocumented immigrants like herself, 24-year-old Angy Rivera, a New York City resident since she was 4, is the eloquent focus of this documentary. What makes it even more memorable is how filmmaker Mikaela Shwer uses Rivera’s story to illuminate the plight of untold numbers of immigrants living in secrecy and fear.

“The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” (HBO)

Hit the Ground Running

Andrew Jarecki’s seductive true-crime documentary takes viewers through a dark looking glass, down a rabbit hole and into the mind of Robert Durst, a real-estate tycoon’s heir and an elusive suspect in three murders, who tells a self-serving tale but then, stunningly, offhandedly and on-microphone, confesses.

“What Happened, Miss Simone?” (Netflix)

A Radical Media Production in association with Moxie Firecracker for Netflix

Tracing Nina Simone’s rise from classical piano prodigy to jazz/pop star, civil rights activist and expatriate, while showcasing her brilliance without dodging her mental-health problems and explosive personal life, this finely-crafted documentary is both a celebration and a compassionate post-mortem.

APRIL 26, 2016 | 01:30PM PT

Michael K. Williams has joined the cast of ABC’s limited series “When We Rise.” Williams, who starred in “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Wire” for HBO and “Hap and Leonard” for Sundance TV, will play African-American community organizer Ken Jones in the project from “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Also joining the miniseries is Ivory Aquino, who will play transgender activist Cecilia Chung.

“When We Rise,” tells the story of the gay-rights movement from its early, tumultuous stages in the 20th century to its enormous strides in recent years. Williams and Chung join a cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg as Pat Norman, the first openly gay employee of the San Francisco Health Department; Rosie O’Donnell as Del Martin, co-founder of the first lesbian organization in the country; Denis O’Hare as Jim Foster, openly gay Democratic party organizer; and David Hyde Pierce.

The seven-part series is written by Black, an Academy Award winner for “Milk.” Gus Van Sant, who directed “Milk,” will direct the two-hour series premiere. The two are set to serve as executive producers with Lawrence Mark and Bruce Cohen. Black’s other writing credits include ”Big Love,” “J. Edgar,” and stage play “8.”

“When We Rise” is produced by ABC Studios.

Sylvia Hoeks Joins ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel

Sylvia Hoecks Joins 'Blade Runner' Sequel

APRIL 26, 2016 | 04:58PM PT

Dutch actress Sylvia Hoeks has been tapped for a leading role alongside Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas and Dave Bautista in Alcon Entertainment’s “Blade Runner” sequel.

Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson made the announcement Tuesday. Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) is directing with principal photography scheduled to begin in July.

The film will be released by Warner Bros. in North America on Oct. 6, 2017, and Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all media for all overseas territories.

Hoeks starred in “Tirza,” directed by Rudolf van den Berg, which was the official Dutch entry for best foreign language film at the Oscars in 2010. Her credits include “Het Meisje en de Dood,” “Duska,” “The Best Offer” and “The Storm.”

Hoeks broke out with the 2007 Jos Stelling film “Duska,” for which she won a Golden Calf (the Dutch equivalent of an Oscar) at the annual Dutch Film Festival.

“Sylvia is a radiant talent, a tremendous actress with great appeal in a wide variety of roles,” Johnson and Kosove said. “Her addition to this vastly accomplished international cast is a perfect fit.”

The sequel is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. Ridley Scott directed the original, which was set in 2019 Los Angeles with Deckard pursuing four replicants who had escaped from an off-world colony.

The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples, which was based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.”

Roger Deakins, who shot “Sicario,” will reunite with Villeneuve on the project as cinematographer. The film has a U.S. release date of Oct. 6, 2017.

Alcon Entertainment acquired the prequel and sequel rights to “Blade Runner” in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin. Producers are Johnson, Kosove and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin with Bud Yorkin receiving producer credit.

Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, the CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Scott will also executive produce. Bill Carraro will executive produce.

Hoeks is represented by ICM Partners, Willemijn Tuip/Copper en Co and Cheryl Snow at Gang Tyre Ramer and Brown.

MUSIC

NEW AGAIN: PRINCE

SPIKE LEE
ELLEN VON UNWERTH

On the last day of September, following the longest music-free spell in his 36-year career, Prince will release his 33rd and 34th studio albums: Plectrumelectrum, with his band 3rdEyeGirl, and Art Official Age, a solo album. To celebrate, we've reprinted Prince's 1997 interview with director Spike Lee. At the time, Prince was going by "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince," and had just married his first wife, Mayte Garcia.

The Artist

By Spike Lee

Through the buzzing of the talk around him threated to drown out the music that made him a cultural landmark, the Artist Formerly Known as Prince is again writing and performing his trademark sexually potent pop. His newest album,Emancipation (NPG Records), marks an important turning point in a career peppered with (as he once sang) controversy. Most recently, his struggle to break free of his former record label, Warner Bros., led to speculation that he was withholding Grade A material until he had a more satisfactory deal elsewhere. Whether or not this was the case, the double-platinum-and-countingEmancipation is a three-disc dish of classic funk, pearly ballads, pastel-hued jams, and even a creamy cover of the Joan Osborne hit, "One of Us." It is a romantic, emotional record, and one that is also powered by the Artist's (as he is now called) faith in God and love for his wife, Mayte Garcia. Here he sits down in New York with writer and director Spike Lee, whose 1996 film Girl 6 featured on its soundtrack songs by the man record sellers now "file under Prince."

SPIKE LEE: It is February 7, in the year of our Lord 1997, St. Moritz Hotel, New York, and I am here with the Artist Formerly Known as Prince. To start, there's something that we need to get out of the way. I really feel awkward asking you this, but I just have to. Will you say anything about your child [who, it has been widely reported, died shortly after his birth last fall]?

PRINCE: I have written a song that says: If you ever lose someone dear to you, never say the words, "They're gone," and they'll come back.

LEE: That will be a highly anticipated song. Before we drove to The Chris Rock Show, where you were taping a segment, I asked you about the title of your multi-platinum new album Emancipation. I said, "Do you feel free?" and you gave a great response.

PRINCE: There is something that happens when you get emancipated. You approach life differently. You eat differently. You respect yourself more. You respect the gift you have been given. Everything has changed for me since I've changed my name. It's one thing to be called Prince but it's better to actually be one. I have such a reverence for life now. And I have stopped eating all animal products.

LEE: So, when you look back, do you see periods in your life when you did not like your Prince persona?

PRINCE: Towards the end I was a little ashamed of what Prince had become. I really felt like a product, and then I started turning in work that reflected that. I had no problem with people saying I was repeating myself. I knew where I was headed and just needed direction. Once I got direction, I looked up and L. Londell McMillan was there.

LEE: You mean your new lawyer?

PRINCE: Yes. He also has a reverence for life. He seems to be a righteous soul and is focused as to what he is on earth for. Those are some of the things we talked about—what we as black people are supposed to represent during this time period.

LEE: Six or seven years ago I had the audacity to write a letter about your choice of women used in music and music videos. Do you remember that?

PRINCE: Yes.

LEE: Let's talk about that. I think it was very rude on my part. I'll be forty on March 20th and in a lot of ways back then I was too righteous about that type of stuff. Tell the audience what was in that letter I wrote you.

PRINCE: I don't remember exactly. It's really vague to me.

LEE: I wrote, "Are there going to be any women of dark complexion in your music videos and your films? You had only white women in your stuff." Do you recall what you wrote back to me? You set me straight there!

PRINCE: I probably said one had to look at everything I have done, not just the most successful pieces. But I have to be honest, I know you as a different person now, too. We met under different circumstances back then, and I have grown and so have you.

LEE: Do you remember the first time we met?

PRINCE: Graffiti Bridge [the Artist's 1990 dramatic film]?

LEE: Yes, you invited me and my producer Monty Ross up to the shoot. Now I'd like to ask you, how has marriage changed you?

PRINCE: It is ever-evolving every day. It is not a subject I like discussing, but my wife's pregnancy made me an adult four times over. Kids will do that. Just dealing with every circumstance is an emotional roller coaster, but nevertheless I have grown so much as a soul. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel a lot better now.

LEE: Let's talk about the last couple of years at [your former label] Warner Bros. records. Would it be safe to say that the music you were putting out was just fulfilling a contract, or were you giving the best you had to offer at that time?

PRINCE: I was doing my best to fulfill my contract. You can hear that my soul has been in love with [my wife] Mayte for thousands of years. I believe that I was just trying to express it in a simple record. I wanted to say friend, lover, sister, mother, wife back then, but it wasn't the time. If you check the video for the song "Seven," you will see Mayte and I walking through the doors hand-in-hand and the dove exploding. That was when I spiritually checked out of the whole situation; but I did what I had to do.

LEE: Right now I have a copy of your Emancipation CD and my wife wanted to kill me because I had "Soul Sanctuary" on repeat. I played that song for two hours straight. It's four minutes long. Divide that into two hours. She was about to go upside my head. But tell me about that song. I love it!

PRINCE: Sandra St. Victor helped with that one. The melody is basically mine, but the lyrics were inspired by verses that Sandra wrote. I love the idea of an ex-lover leaving her reflection in the mirror after she's gone. You know, I just hope to see the day when all artists, no matter what color they are, own their masters [tapes].

LEE: Let me ask you this: Why don't African-American artists own their own masters? Is it because we don't have the right lawyers?

PRINCE: I think we can get the right lawyers, but I think we all need to change our mind-set and go in specifically after that [ownership of master recordings] and not just take the pink Cadillac. Then you will see change. It is befuddling how other people own their masters. I guess it's who you know and what deal you make.

LEE: It's about ownership, isn't it?

PRINCE: Ownership, that's what you give your kids. That's your legacy. Every one of those songs!

LEE: And what about your name?

PRINCE: You know, black people still call me Prince. Sometimes I ask them, "Why do you call me Prince?" And people say, "Because you are a prince to us." Usually when they say that, you know my heart goes out and I have to say, "I don't mind your calling me that." If there is a pronunciation to my name in the future, I hope it will be "Prince." That's my dream. But until that say, I'll just go by this. [holds up a necklace with his symbol on it] This is my "X."

LEE: You said that a lot of people were confused when you wrote "slave" on your face. People said they didn't know what to call you, but you got it all worked out now?

PRINCE: We got it all worked out! My worth went down a little bit during that period. [laughs] I'm sure there will be a few doors closed to me now because of my emancipation.

LEE: Yeah, well that's the mentality of a runaway slave. You're no longer a house-negro. The millennium is coming up. Everybody knows what song is going to be played on New Year's Eve 1999. [laughs] Can you talk about any of your plans? When will we see another album?

PRINCE: To be honest, I thought I had emptied the gun with this one [Emancipation] and I wouldn't have to record for a while, but some new things came up that are all acoustic.

LEE: Acoustic?

PRINCE: Yeah, just me and a guitar in the room. One song is called "The Truth" and one is called "Don't Play Me." There is a line about ebonics in it but I won't get into that. [both laugh]

LEE: No, let's get into that. What do you think about ebonics? I think it's a plot! And there's black people behind that plot.

PRINCE: Comedian Chris Rock said it best: There is language that will get you a job and there is language that won't. Make that choice as an American. This is where you live now.

LEE: Tell me honestly, and you can answer this any way you want: How did you like the way we used your songs in Girl 6? Talk about that process, because the way we did it I had already cut the film before adding your songs. You were also generous enough to give us three new songs. Tell me which songs worked for you in the movie and which ones didn't?

PRINCE: Some worked stronger than others, but overall, musically, I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised and I like the film for the style in which you did it. I'd never seen that done before. The scene at Coney Island, where you used "How Come U Don't Call Me Any More," is my favorite scene. In fact it forced me to put that song back into our set. I said I would never play it again because I used to think I couldn't do it better than I did with my band, the Revolution. But your film gave me newfound respect for the music.

LEE: When you came up with that song, "Sexy Mother Fucker," I said, "My man is losing his mind." But I liked it.

PRINCE: The chorus was a little "different" for you, huh? [Lee in background singing, "shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass"] I was talking to Chris Rock and he said the same thing, "Every time you put out an album, I think you've lost your mind!" The music I make a lot of the time is reflective of the life I am leading, and "Sexy MF" came during the period I had at the Glam Slam disco [in Minneapolis] and I was hanging out a lot. There was a dance troupe there, and the sexier the dancers, the bigger the revenues and the nosier the crowd. It's funny, but you have to remember that was during the time when the biggest club song was "Bitch Betta Have My Money." When you hear something constantly, you can get swayed by the current. I was swayed by hip-hop at the time.

LEE: Do you feel that you successfully incorporated rap into your music? Sometimes it felt like it was just stuck on.

PRINCE: I've gotten criticism for the rap I've chosen to put in my past work. But there again, it came during my friction years. If you notice, not a lot of stuff is incorporated into my sets now. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you hear the new remixes we are working on. On the rap tip though, it is an old style and I have always done it kind of differently—half sung, you know, like "Irresistible Bitch" and some of the other things I used to do.

LEE: Do you ever think that you have been cursed? That you can't stop the music in your head?

PRINCE: Sometimes it is a curse, but it's also a blessing. It is a gift that I am completely grateful for. That's why I keep [making music], because I don't want to be ungrateful for the gift.

LEE: I know you guys want to keep it all mysterious, but I know there is a creative process to how you write a song. It might not be the same thing all the time, though.

PRINCE: Yes, it is different all the time. The main way that something comes is fully completed. And the fun part then is just listening. When I'm writing, some days the pen just goes. I'm not in charge and I'm almost listening outside of it. That's when I realize that we all have to start looking at life as a gift. It's like listening to a color and believing that these colors have soul mates and once you get them all together the painting is complete.

LEE: What is Cat [a former dancer with the Artist] doing now?

PRINCE: Last time I spoke with her she walked up to Mayte and me and said to us, "I like you two dancing together, but she'll never be what I was with you." Thevery last time we spoke. [laughs]

LEE: And Apollonia?

PRINCE: To be honest, I haven't really spoken to anybody. Once I got married, the phone stopped ringing.

LEE: You said earlier that you have been in love with Mayte for one thousand years. Can you elaborate on that?

PRINCE: I am a firm believer in reincarnation for people who either have more work to do or have so much debt to pay back that they have to be here. I hope for me it is the former, and my work was finding Mayte and having a child, which we will continue to work on until there are several here.

LEE: Would you like to comment on how the media attempted to make a circus out of that particular episode?

PRINCE: What people have to realize is that if one has a firm belief in God and the spirit then one does not make statements that are negative and untrue. I would have been lying to myself and the spirit of the child. I have a very thick skin. I take everything that comes and let it bounce right off me because I know the time will come when nobody will be able to speak falsely. Mankind doesn't understand the whole process yet; that we have to ask for the ownership of our own masters, instead of taking the Cadillac, so to speak.

LEE: Quick music question: why did you decide to make "Betcha By Golly Wow!" the first single from Emancipation? Why did you want to do a cover?

PRINCE: I don't believe in singles. The singles market has changed. I am trying to get back to the old days of releasing albums at will, like Star Wars coming out again.

LEE: I want to ask you about how you pick bands. You've had several. Can you tell me about that whole process? Is it the same way a general manager would pick a team?

PRINCE: I have been blessed with having these people come to me. I don't want to seem cosmic or anything, but it really seems magical because in this band I was looking for a group of four vegetarians.

LEE: Was that actually a criterion, that they have to be totally vegetarian? Do you think that meat and stuff clogs up your brain?

PRINCE: Our people have the worst diet of anybody. I'm ready to put a farmer on my payroll. We've got to get back to growing our own food. You are what you eat!

LEE: For our audience, I want to present this question to you: How is it that Geffen, Spielberg, and Katzenberg got together? How was it that these three giants put aside their egos and came together for the whole? What would stop African-American artists like me, yourself, Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby...

PRINCE: My hat goes off to anybody who can sit down and put their heads together. I am ready for something like that because I am free and I am happy and I have time. There were a lot of things in the way before. I have nothing but time now, and I love getting older.

LEE: We've got to do a musical together.

PRINCE: We have to do several. Some will hit and some won't, but hey, we have the time.

Warcraft International Trailer & Image: Worlds Will Collide

Warcraft is the first big screen adaptation of the Warcraft gaming property, so it’s only fitting that the film draws inspiration primarily from the first Warcraft video game installment (released in 1994), Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. The fantasy adventure is headlined by Travis Fimmel (Vikings) and Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as the human Sir Anduin Lothar and orc Durotan, respectively: warriors from the two races that find themselves on the verge of war when the orcs flee to the human-ruled realm of Azeroth, in order to escape their dying world.

Meanwhile, caught in between these two war-mongering races (represented by the armies known as The Alliance and Horde, in turn) are such individuals as the half-orc warrior Garona (Paul Patton). The Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star’s character is officially described by Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment as being “a strong-willed survivor who must decide where her true loyalty lies.”

A newly-released international Warcraft trailer (see above) highlights Anduin and Durotan’s combined efforts to prevent a full-scale war between their respective people in the film, much like previously-released trail...d TV spotsfor the movie have. However, the preview also further alludes to Garona’s significance in brokering a peace deal between the humans and orcs, as well as the film’s narrative as a whole.

Warcraft director Duncan Jones (Source Code), who also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Charles Leavitt (In the Heart of the Sea), further emphasized Garona’s importance in the Warcraft movie’s storyline when interviewed by USA Today, referring to the character as being the ‘fulcrum’ (so to speak) between “the invading orc culture and the slightly sedentary human culture that’s been at peace for a while.”

Images like the one above and the Warcraft trailer footage that has been unveiled to date have also hinted at a romantic connection of sorts between the characters of Anduin and Garona – something that Jones also alluded to when he spoke to USA Today (without flat-out confirming):

“Fundamentally there’s a respect of one warrior for another [between Anduin and Garona]. But they’re both good-looking people, so there might be more.”

ADVERTISING

Costarring the likes of Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter), Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Clancy Brown (Daredevil) and Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands), among others, Warcraft is facing the challenge of introducing the Warcraft mythos to the filmgoing masses unfamiliar with the original video game property – and will therefore be working over-time just to remember things like “Alliance,” “Horde,” and other key franchise terminology – while at the same time crafting a satisfying standalone narrative that one could summarize as “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes meets Lord of the Rings.” Of course, there’s plenty of additional source material that will be left over for exploration in future movies, but at the moment it seems Legendary/Blizzard will be testing the waters here for a Warcraft movie franchise, and not taking it as a given – as so many properties and/or shared universes do nowadays (see: Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc.).

warcraft movie 2016 trailer images orcs Warcraft International Trailer & Image: Worlds Will Collide

Toby Kebbell as Durotan in Warcraft

While the quality of overall storytelling remains to be seen, one area where Warcraft should deliver is visual effects and digita...ed imagery. The movie entered post-production some two years before its scheduled June 2016 release date, as Industrial Light & Magic/ILM (Jurassic World, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens) set to crafting the film’s numerous digital elements – including motion-capture orc characters (among other fantasy creatures in Warcraft) and the film’s various fantasy landscapes/scenery – and thus far, all of that time and effort on ILM’s part seems to have paid off in Warcraft having a unique and impressive visual aesthetic, on the whole.

Indeed, if there’s a good storyline to go with the flashiness (which, given Jones’ track record, there should be), thenWarcraft may yet be the rare video game property that makes a graceful leap to the big screen. If that happens, it could also result in other slow-developing fantasy genre IP adaptations (Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering) being put on the fast-track to production too – so it’s not just the potential Warcraft sequels that will be affected by how Jones’ film performs, both commercially and critically.

Fox Orders ‘24’ Spinoff and ‘Star’ From Lee Daniels for 2016-17 Season

REX/SHUTTERSTOCK
APRIL 27, 2016 | 09:30AM PT

Fox is jumping into the 2016-2017 television season, ordering “24: Legacy” and “Star” to series, Variety has learned.

The network has greenlit the “24” spinoff with a 12-episode order. “Star,” which hails from “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels, landed a 13-episode order.

Corey Hawkins will topline the rebooted “24” in a completely new role, as the series is without Kiefer Sutherland — and Jack Bauer — this time around. However, Sutherland will serve as an exec producer on “Legacy,” marking his first time being listed as an EP on “24,” There are no plans for him to reprise his role as Jack Bauer at this time.

The new series will retain the original show’s format of real-time storytelling with split screens and like the original, will represent one hour of an eventful day in each episode. The series revolves around a military hero’s (Hawkins) return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back — compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. Miranda Otto (“Homeland”) and Jimmy Smits (“Sons of Anarchy”) star alongside Hawkins.

“24: Legacy” hails from the original team of exec producers, Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz and Brian Grazer, who shepherded the project. Grazer is one of Fox’s most important producers, as he’ll have three projects in total on the network next season with “24,” the third season of smash hit “Empire” and the upcoming racially-charged event series “Shots Fired.” Coto and Katz will serve as writers, while Stephen Hopkins will serve as director and exec producer. 20th Century Fox Television, Grazer’s Imagine Television and Gordon’s Teakwood Lane Productions are behind “24: Legacy.”

Bouncing off of the successful “Empire” music-filled formula, “Star” — which is not in any way an “Empire” spinoff — follows three talented singers who navigate the cut-throat music business on their road to success. Newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady star as the young singers, alongside Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt. Announced on Wednesday, Lenny Kravitz will guest star. “Star,” co-created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, will feature original music and stunning musical fantasy sequences.

Insiders say both projects have been shoo-ins for Fox’s 2016-17 slate, as the network has been hopeful for series orders for both “24” and “Star” since before the pilots even shot. After the pilots came through, execs decided to hand out early pickups before the typical announcement in mid-May ahead of Upfront presentations in NYC. The pair of shows are the first new original full series orders for Fox, other than the animated hybrid comedy “Son of Zorn,” which is also slated for 2016-17.

The original “24” was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran and ran from 2001 to 2010 with eight seasons and a television movie, titled “Redemption.” In 2014, “24” returned for “24: Live Another Day,” an event series starring Sutherland that has been billed as the franchise’s ninth season.

Fox is hot on reboots lately. Following a successful revival of “The X-Files” this year, the network is gearing up for a “Prison Break” event series that will bring back the original cast.

Stephen King's 'Cell' Transform Smartphone Users Into Mindless Killers

April 26, 2016

A bunch of zombified cellphone users is pretty standard these days — not exactly the stuff of nightmares. But add a dose of Stephen King to transform the slack-jawed screen junkies into a bloodthirsty mob and you have Cell.

The horrormeister adapted his 2006 novel for the film, which reteams John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson from another King-based thriller, 1408. Cusack plays Clay Riddell, an artist who is separated from his family when the mysterious “Pulse” is blasted out over the cell network, turning anyone who was using a smartphone into a mindless killer.

Jackson is Tom McCourt, an unlikely hero who helps Clay navigate the “phoners” in a search for his lost son. Along the way, they and their fellow survivors, including Isabelle Fuhrman and Stacy Keach, learn that the masses are under the sway of the hoodie-wearing “Raggedy Man.”

After nearly a decade in development — at one point Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) was planning to direct before giving up the reins to Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) — the film is set to arrive June 10 on Ultra VOD and July 8 in theaters and standard-issue VOD.

Eye eye Captain, America! Braless Elizabeth Olsen steals the show at London's star-studded Marvel premiere... and her busty display is a hit with peeping co-star Chris Evans

On or off the red carpet, she never fails to deliver.

And Elizabeth Olsen pulled yet another stunning look out of the bag when she attended the European premiere of Captain America: Civil War at the Vue cinema in London's Shepherds Bush on Tuesday evening.

Walking the red carpet alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names, the 27-year-old made sure to stand out from her fellow A-listers in an alluring floor-length gown - a look that certainly seemed a hit with her co-star Chris Evans.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron star injected the event with a welcome dose of glamour in a white gown that had been given a daring twist with gaping keyhole detailing.

The plunging cut-out, which ran from her neck to her navel, teased more than just a glimpse of Elizabeth's generous bust as she worked her angles for the flashing photographers.

The screen siren's seductive style even warranted a cheeky peep from the movie's leading man Chris, who appeared to be enjoying a quickly glimpse at Elizabeth's bust as they posed for a group snap.

Despite the garment's risque upper half, the design remained demure with its floor-sweeping skirt and slightly ruched waist which created a gorgeously feminine silhouette.

Play peekaboo like Elizabeth in a cut out dress by Alexander McQueen

Elizabeth Olsen ruled the red carpet at the Captain America: Civil War premiere in London, wearing an ivory gown by Alexander McQueen.

The leading lady is definitely catching up to her sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley in the style stakes! This Pre-AW16 collection piece oozes sophistication and that daringly deep keyhole cut out adds just the right amount of va va voom.

The knot front is super flattering (very Angelina Jolie-esque!), plus the long sleeves balance out the racy front and the maxi skirt falls beautifully. It's perfection!

Unfortunately this exact dress isn't available to buy yet, but click (right) to pre-order a similar wrap front version by McQueen. Then style it simply for a black tie occasion with a pendant necklace and swept-up hair to make the most of the revealing neckline.

Or be a cut above with the help of our edit below. This Solace London dress will knock their socks off or ASOS has got some very budget-friendly options.

Extending the glamour to her glossy mane, Elizabeth wore her blonde tresses in retro waves and sampled a make-up look that was equally enchanting with a red lipstick and dramatic smokey eyeshadow look.

But despite looking right at home on the red carpet, Elizabeth confessed at the premiere on Tuesday that she once wanted to quit acting.

The younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen said there was a point in her younger years when she wanted to shelf her dream of becoming an actress because she didn't want to be a child star.

'When I was nine or 10, I contemplated quitting acting, so it wasn't a real thing,' she said.

'I think those people are completely separate. When I was a little girl, I didn't want to work as a child actress but as an adult I always wanted to be an actress, so I am thankful for every job.'

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old beauty - who stunned in a daring white dress at the premiere on Tuesday evening (26.04.16) - previously insisted she doesn't have any 'desire' to be famous.

She explained: 'I wanted to be an actress, but felt it was such a cliché. I thought if I could make it more of a pretentious theatre experience, I could justify it. But celebrity and fame are so odd to me, I just don't have any desire for that at all.'

But she wasn't the only star to dazzle on the red carpet as she was joined by the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Emily VanCamp, Paul Rudd and Tom Holland.

Emily, 29, went for the opposite end of the colour spectrum in a black jumpsuit, which featured glitzy, baroque embellishments around the torso, while the bottom half of the design was comprised of tailored trousers.

Other stars to attend the premiere included Anthony Mackie, who plays fictional superhero Falcon in the flick, Jeremy Renner, who will reprise the role of Hawkeye, and Paul Bettany, who stars as Vision, all of whom were sharp-suited for the occasion.

Samuel L Jackson, who portrays Nick Fury, also graced the event's red and blue carpet, despite not featuring in the latest installment.

The film is the sequel to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The plot centres around political interference in the Avengers' activities, causing a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man.

New government laws being introduced to regulate superheros divide the entire team into two factions; one lead by Captain America who resists it, the other by Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, who wants to enforce it.

The adrenaline pumping trailer for the latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows the two former friends beating each other up in a mouth-watering matchup.

Our lips aren't sealed about this -- The Go-Go's will perform at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.

The group will celebrate their 35th anniversary of their hit "We Got the Beat" at the ceremony. They will also announce their North American farewell tour.

P!nk is also scheduled to perform her song, "Just Like Fire," during the show.

The Billboard Music Awards, hosted by Ciara and Ludacris, will air May 22 on ABC.

Prince's final shows: intimate, playful with a Bowie tribute

ATLANTA (AP) — The crowd at Atlanta's Fox Theater was on its feet screaming. Prince had already taken an encore, but he'd only played for just over an hour and he hadn't even played "Purple Rain."

This show could not be over.

He walked back onstage toward his purple grand piano and began singing:

"I, I will be king."

"And you, you will be queen."

This wasn't a Prince song, this was "Heroes." It was a low-key memorial from one icon who changed music with inventiveness and daring sexuality to another — David Bowie, who died in January.

After one more encore, about 80 minutes of total music, Prince left the stage to prepare for his second show.

This would be the last night he ever performed.

There aren't many musicians who could pull together a night of music the way Prince did this one — both spontaneous and meticulously planned. He announced his shows just eight days before he was to play. Tickets went on sale the next day, with the cheapest costing well over $100, with fees. To prevent scalping, fans could only buy two and had to pick them up in person at the theater on the day of the show.

Still, the two shows in the 4,600 seat theater sold out almost instantly.

The day he was to play, an email went out; Prince had the flu, he had to postpone. He eventually rescheduled for a week later, April 14.

An announcement in the theater explained that "The Artist" insisted no photos or video be taken, and black tie-clad enforcers were scattered throughout the theater.

The show, just Prince and a piano, was intimate and playful, with candelabras on the sides of the stage and a massive screen of ever changing kaleidoscopic projections at the back.

Prince entered with a cane that seemed all style and no function, and cut through the smoke billowing across the stage to his piano.

He began with a medley of "Little Red Corvette" and "Dirty Mind" that somehow transformed into the Peanuts theme of "Linus and Lucy."

In the middle of songs, he'd take one hand off the keys to scroll through a tablet perched on top of his piano.

He briefly mentioned begging his jazz pianist dad to teach him piano, and he apologized for having postponed the show. But he didn't speak much.

He seemed full of energy. Between songs, he'd jump up and walk circles around the stage.

At one point, maybe 20 minutes in, Prince just disappeared. Is there an intermission? People began going to the bathroom, but he quickly returned, saying that he had forgotten how emotional his songs could be.

He cycled through a few of his major hits, including "Nothing Compares 2 U," ''I Would Die 4 U," ''The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," and "Kiss." But there were many more he never got to.

His second show turned out to have a different set list, one that included "Purple Rain."

But when Prince walked off the stage of that early show after three encores, the crowd screamed for more. Even when the house lights came on, they continued to chant "Purple Rain," over and over in hopes he might have a fourth encore in him.

He never returned.

Release of New Monkees Album, "Good Times!," Moved Up to May; Full Details Unveiled

Rhino
Rhino

The Monkees have unveiled the full official details about their forthcoming studio album, Good Times!, which originally had been scheduled for a June 10 release but now will hit stores on May 27.

The record, which is being issued in conjunction with the band’s 50th anniversary, features new vocal, musical and songwriting contributions from the group’s three surviving members — Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork — as well as an archival performance from the late Davy Jones.

Good Times! includes several tunes penned especially for the project by various respected rock songwriters, including Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and The Jam’s Paul Weller, XTC’s Andy Partridge, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, who also produced the album.

In addition, the record features newly finished versions of tracks that The Monkees began working on during the 1960s but didn’t complete, including the Harry Nilsson-penned title track, Neil Diamond’s “Love to Love” and songs written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart and Jeff Barry & Joey Levine.

The song “Good Times” features Dolenz duetting with the guide vocal that the late Nilsson laid down when he began working on the tune in the late ’60s. “Love to Love”features vocals Jones recorded back in the day.Nesmith penned a tune called “I Know What I Know,” Tork wrote a track titled “Little Girl” and Dolenz co-wrote the album closer, “I Was There (and I’m Told I Had a Good Time),” with Schlesinger.

As previously reported, The Monkees will head out on an expansive 50th anniversary tour next month, although only Dolenz and Tork have signed on to take part. The trek gets under way on May 18 in Fort Myers, Florida, and currently is mapped out through an October 29 concert in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

In related news, the entire Monkees TV series will be released on Blu-ray for the first time on June 24 as part of a limited-edition video box set. The 10-disc collection will feature high-definition footage restored from the original film negatives, a variety of previously unseen outtakes, The Monkees’ 1968 feature film Head and much more.

Here is the full track list of The Monkees’ Good Times!, along with the songwriters of each tune:

“Good Times” (Harry Nilsson)
“You Bring the Summer” (Andy Partridge)
“She Makes Me Laugh” (Rivers Cuomo)
“Our Own World” (Adam Schlesinger)

Elizabeth Olsen takes the plunge as she leads stars at glamorous Captain America premiere

The actress looked incredible in a revealing floor-length white gown, as she joined everyone from Robert Downey Jr. to Paul Rudd

The stars flocked to the red carpet

Elizabeth Olsen stole the show at the Captain America: Civil War premiere in London tonight.

The actress took the plunge as she went braless on the red carpet in a floor-length white gown, showing off her flawless figure.

The elegant number left little to the imagination, as the star flashed mega cleavage, and she wore her hair loose and wavy as she greeted fans in the capital.

Emily VanCamp, who is well known for her role in hit show Revenge, opted for a black patterned lace top and tight trousers.

The blonde beauty towered in slim stilettos and gave Elizabeth competition in the see-through cut-out number, risking a major wardrobe malfunction in front of the cameras.

They were joined by Iron Man star Robert, who dressed to impress in a grey suit and blue tie.

Asked whether he sided with his character Tony Stark - aka Iron Man - in the battle, Downey joked: "Chris Evans is such a righteous guy, you've got to wonder: is there something wrong with me for going against him?"

But he added: "I can honestly say, I kind of get Tony's point of view."

And Paul Rudd was close behind, rocking a thick bushy beard, as he slipped into a smart suit too - with a vibrant green tie for the occasion.

Paul joked on the red carpet: "There are some pretty epic battles in this movie, and there is a lot of drama and tension, and I think that apart from contributing to some of that as well, Ant-Man is a little overwhelmed by the situation and feels the need to comment on that. So that allows room for some jokes, I think."

Other famous faces included Anthony Mackie, Tom Holland, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans.

Chris recently dropped somewhat of a bombshell when he revealed he actually sides with Iron Man in the movie, rather than his own character Captain America.

Asked how governments would deal with superheroes in 2016, he admitted he wouldn't be on his own team in the film.

He said: "You have to answer to somebody. You couldn't just let this group of vigilantes answer to yourself."

The Inside Story on Designing Prince's Paisley Park

April 2016

In 1985, 23-year-old architect Bret Thoeny was asked to build something he had never constructed before: an artist's compound.

"Back then, this wasn't done. Artist's weren't building their own compounds, only large companies or record labels were," Thoeny said in an interview with Billboard Thursday night (April 22). "But Prince, Prince had this vision to have everything under one roof. And this was decades before it was common for any individual to do that."

Lionsgate, Fox Sign Latin American TV Output Deal

COURTESY OF LIONSGATE
APRIL 28, 2016 | 10:16AM PT

Lionsgate and Fox Networks Group Latin America have announced a multi-year output agreement through which Lionsgate will supply first-run films for FNG’s pay TV and basic cable channels across Latin America.

The pact also gives the channels access to films in Lionsgate’s library. The deal includes “Divergent” and “Insurgent” — the first two titles in the Divergent series — along with “Philomena” and the Pantelion title “Ladrones,” with Latin American stars Fernando Colunga and Eduardo Yañez.

“We are delighted to have secured this important agreement with our friends at Fox Networks Group Latin America,” said Peter Iacono, Liosngate’s president of international television and digital distribution. “Our aim is always to garner maximum value from each of our titles and this multiple year output deal for pay TV and basic cable with such a major network in Latin America will enable our first-class programming to showcase widely across this important region.”

Richard Rohrbach, senior VP of acquisitions for Fox Networks Group Latin America, said in a statement: “Thanks to much hard work by executives from both companies, the highly successful content from the Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment labels has found a home as part of the portfolio of content offered on Fox Network Groups channels in Latin America. With audiences that continually demand more and better content, Lionsgate will be a great addition to the other programming we currently offer.”

The deal was brokered by Iacono and Maryann Pasante for Lionsgate with Rohrbach.

John Mellencamp: If Music Was Protected Online Like TV, ‘We Would Be in Better Shape’

DAVID BUCHAN/VARIETY/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK
APRIL 28, 2016 | 08:08AM PT

John Mellencamp and Walk the Moon received the night’s biggest honors at the 33rd annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, at the Loews Hollywood Hotel on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The invitation-only event, which celebrates the best in music songwriting and publishing, brought out Ne-Yo, Max Martin, Poo Bear, Dave Bassett and more for an evening of fine dining and musical performances.

“I never thought about being a songwriter,” said Mellencamp, accepting the ASCAP Founders Award. “So, when I got a record deal I thought I was just going to sing and they said: ‘No you got to write songs.'”

“Good thing for me back then there was a thing called artist development, where an artist could find himself and his voice,” the honoree added.

Mellencamp also used the stage to confront the changes in the music industry in the past few years, particularly “search engines giving away our music.”

“If we would have treated search engines the same way we treat NBC and CBS, and they had to follow the FCC rules, we would all be in better shape as a community, as a business, and be able to develop young songwriters and young singers, and still have record companies and record sales,” he said. “But, I don’t think it’s too late for that.”

Walk the Moon accepted the Vanguard Award, which gave the band recognition for “Song of the Year” for its hit “Shut Up and Dance.” The group attributed the success of the song to its “rock and roll and throwback” vibe, which the members said was not on the radio at the time.

Other big winners of the night included Martin, who was honored as the Songwriter of the Year for his work with Ellie Goulding, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and others; Warner/Chappell received the award for Publisher of the Year, and BMG was honored with the award for Independent Publisher of the Year. Martin is the only songwriter in history to win the songwriter prize nine times.

Performances of the night included OMI, who sang “Cheerleader,” as well as Audra Mae, who performed “Heartbeat Song” by Kelly Clarkson. Additionally, Priscilla Renea gave a stirring performance of “Purple Rain” in honor of Prince and other musicians who passed this year.

ASCAP will continue its celebration of music in Los Angeles with the ASCAP Expo, which runs through April 30.

‘Peanuts’ Will Return to U.S. TV on Boomerang

COURTESY OF FRANCE TELEVISIONS
APRIL 28, 2016 | 07:48AM PT

Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of Charles Schulz’ “Peanuts” gang will return to U.S. TV in a series of animated vignettes set to debut on Time Warner’s Boomerang network on May 9.

New episodes will debut each day at 11:30 a.m.

The cartoons come not from the people who devised TV classics like “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” or “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” but rather Normaal Animation of France, which is operating under license from Peanuts Worldwide LLC. The cartoons began running overseas in 2014 in advance of the debut of a new movie featuring Sally, Linus, Peppermint Patty and others which surfaced in 2015.

Time Warner’s Turner broadcasting unit will unfurl a sneak peek of “Peanuts” on Cartoon Network the week of May 9 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern/ Individual shorts will roll out on that network’s video app.

The series is billed as using a watercolor art style and textured backgrounds that is aimed at pleasing both classic and new fans.

Use of the series comes as Boomerang works to establish itself as a network for family friendly programming. Once a commercial-free outlet that ran many of the old Hanna-Barbera classics assimilated into the Turner library, the cable network now runs ads and is using vintage characters like Scooby-Doo and Bugs Bunny in new iterations to capture interest from kids and parents.

"I'm super stoked to be writing a song for the Monkees," says Cuomo. "I've always identified with their musical aesthetic – the chord changes and melodies."

(in stores May 27th) celebrates the group's 50th anniversary as a recording unit, and it features songs by Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and XTC's Andy Partridge, as well as Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. There are also tunes written by Neil Diamond and Carole King in the 1960s that the group never got around to releasing. The album was produced by Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne.

The Monkees reformed with original guitarist Mike Nesmith in 2012, shortly after the sudden death of Davy Jones. Nesmith played a series of critically acclaimed tours with surviving members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork through 2014, but this summer they are hitting the road without him. Nesmith did contribute a tune to Good Times! ("I Know What I Know"), and he plays guitar and sings on several tracks on the album.

Rivers Cuomo is a longtime Monkees fan. "I've always felt a personal connection to the Monkees because I'm from the same small New England farm town as Peter Tork," he writes in the album's liner notes. "I used to hear that one of the Monkees went to my high school, which was an amazing fact to me because it was such a small school out in the middle of nowhere. It gave me the feeling that if an E.O. Smith kid made it to the top once, it can happen again. So let that be an inspiration to you E.O. Smith kids now, maybe 30 years into the future you'll be writing a song for a new Weezer album."

In today’s TV news roundup, Sylvester Stallone has landed his first television gig on a mafia drama from “The Godfather” author and Antoine Fuqua.

CASTING:

Sylvester Stallone, the TV star?

The “Rocky” icon has been attached to star in the television adaptation of Mario Puzo’s “Omerta,”which is being developed by “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua. No network is attached, but the hot project is currently being shopped around, eyeing a straight-to-series order, likely from cable networks and streaming services.

“Omerta” is the third book in the mafia trilogy that started with “The Godfather.”

The pilot script and series outline are already in place, according to Deadline who reports that a writers room is being put together, suggesting a quick turnaround for production to begin. Justin Herber and Adam Hoff wrote the pilot script, and the search for a showrunner is on.

With Stallone attached, the project is packed with star power, but a female lead will be cast in the drama to co-star with Stallone. “Omerta” marks the first scripted TV series for Stallone, who most recently received rave reviews for “Creed,” which won him a Golden Globe. On the TV front, he is currently an exec producer on NBC’s reality competition show “Strong.”

PREMIERE DATES:

Season 4 of “Are You the One?” will premiere June 13 on MTV.

This round of the hit matchmaking show, which promises a shocking twist, will place 20 single men and women in a house in Hawaii. After all contestants are introduced they’ll each begin a quest to discover which of the housemates is their predetermined “perfect match,” which is decided by a rigorous matchmaking process that involves compatibility testing as well as in-depth interviews with the contestants’ family, friends and exes. If all 10 couples are successfully paired by the season’s end, each contestant will walk away with a share of $1 million.

Season 4’s relationship hopefuls were announced Thursday via the “Are You the One?” official Snapchat account.

GREENLIGHTS:

Beefing up its slate of health-oriented programming, Z Living has greenlit four original series: “Finding Fido,” “Altar’d,” “The Big Fat Truth” and “Yoga Girls.”

The four titles are the first to be ordered under Z Living’s new general manager Rafe Oller and executive VP/head of programming Tim Krubsack, who both joined the wellness network last fall.

“Finding Fido” and “Altar’d” are slated to premiere later this year, with “The Big Fat Truth” and “Yoga Girls” debuting in early 2017.

Zoe Kravitz in Talks to Star With Scarlett Johansson in ‘Rock That Body’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Zoe Kravitz is in early talks to co-star with Scarlett Johansson in the Sony Pictures comedy “Rock That Body.”

Lucia Aniello (“Broad City”) will direct the film and produce along with Paul W. Downs through their Paulilu banner with Matt Tolmach and Dave Becky. Downs is also attached to star.

The script, which appeared on the 2015 Black List, was penned by Aniello and Downs, and acquired by Sony last summer following a competitive bidding war.

The film centers on five friends who rent a beach house in Miami for a bachelorette weekend and accidentally end up killing a male stripper.

A production start date has not been set yet by the studio, which declined to comment on the casting.

After her breakout role in the Showtime comedy “Californication,” Kravitz appeared in “X-Men: First Class.” She has since had strong supporting roles in the “Divergent” franchise and, most recently, as one of the muses in the Warner Bros. hit “Mad Max: Fury Road.” She recently wrapped filming on the HBO limited series “Little Big Lies” opposite Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

She is repped by Paradigm and Untitled Entertainment.

Drew Barrymore to Serve as Narrator on NBC Dating Reality Show ‘First Dates’

Drew Barrymore First DatesAPRIL 28, 2016 | 10:30AM PT

Drew Barrymore has joined NBC’s Ellen DeGeneres-produced dating show “First Dates” as the narrator, Variety has learned.

Based on the UK format, “First Dates” explores the experience of a first date — the promise of potential love when it goes well and the hilariously awkward moments if it crashes and burns. The alternative series follows a variety of real first dates happening throughout one night at the same restaurant in Chicago. The daters are of all ages, backgrounds and from across the country. The audience will be along for the ride in a viewing experience that plays like a real-life romantic comedy and at the end of each episode, it will be revealed if participants want to see each other again for a second date.

Funny enough, Barrymore starred in the 2004 Adam Sandler pic titled, “50 First Dates,” though there’s no correlation between the NBC series and the film.

Narrating “First Dates” is the latest step in Barrymore’s growing television work. The actress recently signed on to star in a Netflix comedy“Santa Clarita Diet,” alongside Timothy Olyphant, and she’s also set to guest star in Bravo’s scripted comedy “Odd Mom Out.”

Warner Bros.-based Shed Media is producing “First Dates” with “Twenty Twenty” and DeGenereres’ “A Very Good Production.” Other exec producers are Pam Healey (“Who Do You Think You Are?”), John Hesling (“Top Gear”), Anthony Dominici (“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”), Jeff Kleeman (“Little Big Shots”) and Twenty Twenty’s Tim Carter.

No premiere date has been set for “First Dates,” which landed an eight-episode order. Production begins this July.

Fox is developing “The First Omen,” a prequel to 1976’s horror-thriller “The Omen,” with Antonio Campos in talks to direct and David S. Goyer on board to produce.

Ben Jacoby has written the script for the prequel. Campos directed “Christine,” which premiered at Sundance and starred Rebecca Hall as Christine Chubbuck, the 29-year-old news reporter who committed suicide on live television in 1974.

Goyer, best known for his work on “The Dark Knight” trilogy, is producing with Kevin Turen through their Phantom Four banner.

“The Omen” was directed by Richard Donner from a David Seltzer script. The film, starring Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and David Warner, revolved around a young child adopted at birth by an American Ambassador and his wife who are unaware that the child is the Antichrist.

“The Omen” was a strong box office performer with over $60 million and won an Academy Award for best original score for Jerry Goldsmith.

Fox remade the movie in 2006, directed by John Moore and starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles. The remake — released on June 6, 2006, to signify the Biblical number 666 of the Beast — was a respectable performer with $120 million in worldwide box office.

Fox Television is also producing “Damien,” an A&E TV series based on the original film with Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) directing.

Campos is repped by UTA and Washington Square Arts. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

Tracy Morgan: 'Prince Was the Soundtrack to My Life'

Comedian remembers how the Purple One helped him get through his father's death

Tracy Morgan remembered Prince in a candid and heartfelt interview withThe Hollywood Reporter. "Was he an influence? Absolutely!" said Morgan. "He was free. He came from the heart. He was talking about making love, he was a sexy man!"

The comedian said Prince and Michael Jackson "were the soundtrack to my life," and added that after his father died, he listened to Prince's "Condition of the Heart" on repeat for 24 hours. "That was the last song I said, 'Dad, listen to this!' And my father said, 'That's a good record,'" Morgan said.

Morgan also shared some lighter memories, including one Prince house party he attended several years ago where the musician performed in his own living room.

"At the end of the night, me and my boy Bradley were drunk," Morgan remembered. "We had these two girls on the sofa, and we were talking, joking, laughing. Prince and his wife came downstairs, and they had on purple pajamas. He said, 'Tracy, get the fuck out!' As I walked out the door, I grabbed him by the back of the neck, and I pulled him close to me. I noticed that mole on his face. He was so pretty, I turned gay for about five seconds. I said, 'My father loved "When Doves Cry."' And he said, 'Yeah, yeah. Just get the fuck out.'"

Morgan closed with the most important lesson he ever learned from Prince: "Prince's music taught me how to suck titties! He taught me how to be gentle. Because of him, I once sucked a titty for an hour. At the end, it looked like a tater-tot. I love Prince."

Amy Grant Teams Up with Tori Kelly to Remake Her '91 Hit 'Baby Baby' for Its 25th Anniversary

04/27/2016 AT 04:45 PM EDT

Stop for a minute: Amy Grant recruited Tori Kelly to re-release her 1991 hit "Baby Baby" – and we're so glad!

PEOPLE has a first listen to the new version of the song, which turns 25 this year. Grant and her label were trying to come up with a fun way to commemorate the No. 1 hit when they decided to tap recent best new artist Grammy nominee Kelly, 23.

"I was thrilled to hear that Tori was on board to record it," Grant, 55, tells PEOPLE. "Although I had not met Tori at that point, my 15-year-old daughter, Corrina, is a big fan of Tori's and so I was very aware of her incredible talent and was honored she would sing this song."

In the end, producer Dave Garcia paired Kelly's newly recorded version with Grant's 25-year-old vocals.

"Tori is such an incredible vocalist, one of the most effortless singers I have ever heard, and once she starts singing it is like a rocket engine has been strapped on to the song and she takes us all on a ride," adds Grant. "I really think she knocked it out of the park."

The inspiration for the track came about when Grant, suffering from a bout of writer's block, was trying to write a song about her daughter Millie, now 26.

"I had played with a few lyric ideas but nothing was working," she says. "And then one day I looked down at my new daughter and thought 'Oh baby, baby,' and the lyric just poured out of me in about 10 minutes."

With the new track dropping everywhere Friday, Grant hopes it'll give fans old and new a boost of nostalgia.

"I have heard from so many people who say they grew up singing the song, or that they sang 'Baby, Baby' to their children when they were young and they are excited to hear a new version," she says.

"My hope is that those who loved the original will enjoy the breath of fresh air that Tori puts into the song and that perhaps the song will find a brand new audience of younger listeners who weren't even born when the original was on the radio."

Charley Pride Embarks on 50th Anniversary Tour

Country Music Hall of Famer will revisit a half century of hits on his North American trek

Fifty years ago, country radio shattered the color barrier as Mississippi native Charley Pride launched his groundbreaking career with his Top Ten debut hit, "Just Between You and Me." Three years later he began a string of chart-topping tunes that eventually earned him CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1971. As the third-best-selling artist of the Seventies, Pride earned a Grammy for his sunny country-pop crossover smash, "Kiss an Angel Good Morning." In celebration of his 50th year in the business, the Country Music Hall of Fame member will tour North America throughout the year.

Charley Pride

"I feel blessed that I'm still going strong after 50 years," says the artist who became a Grand Ole Opry member in 1993 and has performed throughout the world, with especially loyal fans in the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, as well as North America. "I've always loved to sing for audiences and that's never going to change. It's been a joy to visit so many different places in the U.S. over the years. And, of course, I always enjoy traveling Canada. The people of Canada have been wonderful to me going back to the very start of my career."

In 2015, Pride was among the artists represented on Country Music of Your Life, a Time-Life CD collection of vintage country hits. His own education in country music started, he says, with the acts his father listened to when the singer was young.

"My dad loved Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys," he told Rolling Stone Country. "I saw Bill Monroe with Roy Acuff, and from there you just walk on up the line with Eddy Arnold, Hank Williams and the ones that weren't as famous as them but were in that category. For traditional country, I kind of cut if off at George Strait."

With a nearly unbroken streak of 60 Billboard Top Ten hits (and 29 Number Ones) throughout the Seventies and Eighties, the "I'm Just Me" singer will kick off his latest trek this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has dated scheduled through mid-November. He's also set to return to Nashville in early June for appearances at the Grand Ole Opry and CMA Music Festival.

Andrew Dice Clay on 'Dice' and How He Pleases Women

With a new Showtime series, comic discusses his persona and work with Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen

BY KORY GROW April 13, 2016
Andrew Dice Clay; DICE
Andrew Dice Clay tells us about his new show 'Dice,' working with Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen and how he pleases women. Brian Bowen Smith/SHOWTIME

It takes approximately two minutes of speaking to Andrew Dice Clay before he starts a routine. "I was just in New York," he says in the same stentorian, street-tough voice that narrated his filthiest nursery rhymes at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in 1990. "It was so cold. I hate fuckin' bundling up, like. You know how you got to do it – the fuckin' scarf with the hat and the bullshit. But, you know, I love New York. I'm a Brooklyn boy."

Dice is now home in L.A. where it's close to 90 degrees – a temperature shift he calls his "reward" after facing the Big Apple's 40-degree blizzard – and he's in a good mood. This past Sunday his new sitcom,Dice, premiered on Showtime and the first season's entire six-episode run became available via the network's on-demand portals. It depicts the shock comic as he's never allowed anyone to see him before: himself.

Each episode, overseen by creator Scot Armstrong, presents Dice having to come to terms with his onstage persona in various awkward, Curb Your Enthusiasm–style situations. He not-so-carefully delivers a speech at the wedding of two men. He coaches Adrien Brody on how to play the Dice character as a method actor. He comes to terms with one of his old Brooklyn pals becoming rich and trying to change the dynamic of their friendship. It's Dice getting his comeuppance and, with a cast that includes Natasha Leggero as his girlfriend, Kevin Corrigan as his best friend "Milkshake" and his real-life sons as his sons whose music career he's threatening, it's hilarious.

Clay spoke with Rolling Stone about his onscreen and off-screen identity crises.

What appealed to you about doing Dice?
Well, they brought on Scot Armstrong. He [wrote] some of the few comedies that I love, like Old School, which is one of my absolute favorites. When he sent me the script, I said, "This guy's got my voice." I didn't want him just capturing the guy onstage — I could do that. With Dice, they show all the different levels of where I can go. I'm getting to act scenes. I'm getting to do what I truly like whether it's vulnerable, whether it's volatile, whether it's funny. I came into comedy to become an actor. And then my crazy career happened.

What about the casting appealed to you?
I love Natasha [Leggero]. She's in my face; she's like my wife Valerie. I only go with strong women, who have some balls because I'm a lot to handle. I am from Brooklyn. I am loud. I can't go with a meek personality.

What percentage of the show is actually like your real life?
You know the episode where I'm on the party bus and I get in a fight? The guy's saying nasty things about Joan Rivers, OK, who I was friends with and I love. That's based on a true story.

"I'm from Brooklyn. I smoke cigarettes. I went through a lot of fights and bullshit growing up. But I don't walk around my house calling my woman a cunt."

What really happened?
I was in CVS a few days after Joan passed away, getting supplies to go on the road. This older guy on a walker comes up behind me and goes, "Dice!" I'm, like, kneeling down and go, "Oh, how you doin'?" He goes, "Giant fan. Love your work, always have." We spoke a few seconds and he starts walking away then he turns around and goes, "Hey, what did you think of Joan Rivers?" I go, "I thought she was the greatest." He goes, "Well, I thought she was a fuckin' bitch. I mean, what she pulled with Carson years ago."

That was 1986.
Yeah. So I go, "Oh, I'm sorry she didn't do the right thing by you. I'm sorry that this woman wanted her own show and because of the way that show went, her husband blamed himself and killed himself. And yet she went on to become the biggest female comic to ever walk on earth. But it wasn't good enough for you, some motherfucker who is about 10 feet from the grave I'm going to put you in if you don't walk the fuck away. I was friends with that fuckin' woman!" And here comes the security of the store, going, "Is everything alright?" And I go, "Kick this old cocksucker out of the store before I choke him to death because I got a bad temper."

And that became a scene on the show.
Yeah, I tell Scot the story and he puts it on a party bus because we're filming the show in Vegas. When you see me getting angry, I really did want to knock the guy's teeth out. But Scot made it hysterical. Instead of a walker, the guy can't even walk. He's a young guy. And he's with 10 guys, and they all kick the shit out of me 'cause I can't take 10 guys. He amps it up. There are a lot of scenes like that on the show.

Andrew Dice Clay

How did you develop the "Dice" persona?
I was creating my own style of acting on a comedy stage. Watching comedians, they didn't know that much about performance. I grew up as a drummer and a singer so I knew how to perform. I followed that image of Elvis to James Dean to Travolta in Fever. I remember telling my parents, "I want to create the Elvis of comedy. I want to give people a bigger than life, heroic comedian." Because the image was already done in rock & roll and movies and when Henry Winkler played the Fonz on TV.

So I put blinders on and I didn't care what other comics said. I didn't watch their sets because comics are the biggest cocksuckers on earth. There's no camaraderie; they stab each other in the back.

Did any comics support you back then?
Only Eddie Murphy. I was a giant fan of his. I would never even talk to Eddie unless he spoke to me. When I came into the business, he was already a giant movie star.

Here's a funny story. One day, he pulled me over like a cop. I was in a 1970 green convertible Coupe De Ville Caddy, and he was in a little white convertible Mercedes, and he's honkin' at me. He goes, "Pull over." So we drive onto this side street off of Laurel Canyon, and we're just leaning against my car which I thought would've been the greatest picture [laughs]. My wife at the time was in the car. And Eddie starts going, "Don't you let them fuck with you!" Because I was so under a microscope. It was crazy. I remember saying, "Don't these journalists realize I'm bozo with a leather coat on?" There were no motives here. I'm not making a movement. I'm not running for office. I'm just a comic. I just had a dream to create this kind of character for people.

In what ways are you like the Dice character?
I'm from Brooklyn. I smoke cigarettes. I have an attitude because I grew up with one and I went through a lot of fights and bullshit growing up. But I don't walk around my house calling my woman a cunt.

Dice respects women?
I'm probably more respectful to women than most of the guys you know. I'm not a sexist. But I love sex.

My ex-wife was with me for 16 years. That wasn't 'cause I was a sexist. It's 'cause I'm good at what I do when I am with them in that way. You know, my wife, Valerie, she's been with me for seven years. We've been married and divorced, never parted for a day. And my ex-fiancée, Eleanor Kerrigan, who is in my opinion the strongest female stand-up comic in the country, we're friends. We went out for about eight years. We're friends for over 20 years. That girl would not stay with a sexist. She's from fuckin' South Philly with 10 brothers and sisters. She don't take shit. And Valerie is from fucking East L.A. These are tough women.

So what's the secret to a long-lasting love life?
When I start dating a woman, I will tell her, "Whatever you want. Whatever makes you feel good. I don't judge." Let's say I was with a woman for 10 years, and she has an affair, and she's goin', "Well, I never thought I could tell you that I like that." I will make a woman so comfortable with me she could just do whatever she wants. I don't care. It's just about feeling good.

That's not how you are onstage.
Onstage, I love to paint comedic, bigger-than-life sexual pictures for people to laugh at themselves. That's why I use the language I use. Like, when I talk about the penis I might go, "Hey pal, you know when you got a bone-rock in the morning?" "Bone-rock" is hysterical. It's a funny fuckin' name. "You know when you're rubbing your banana against her mudflaps and now you're bangin' right it in right into your plums and banging off that fat?" Why is it "banana" and "plums"? It's hysterical. So I paint these crazy pictures. And that's all it was about to me. Pictures. Comedy.

The first episode of Dice revolves around the wedding of two gay men, and one of the grooms says he doesn't like you because of your act. How often do you have to justify your onstage persona to people in real life these days?
Never anymore. It's been 15, 20 years since magazines were writing only about my act. And in that time, I didn't care about my career. I was bringing up my two sons.

Did Adrien Brody's impersonation of you in the second episode ever scare you?
To work with an actor of that caliber and see him turn into what he turned into was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. When this was offered to him he said, "I jumped on it. I've always been a fan of yours." He's amazing. But when he got into the character, it bothered me. I'd be like, "Adrien, all right. Come on." He'd go "Brody." He goes, "Don't call me Brody." I go, "I know, but … " He'd get in it. That's what method actors do. "I don't act; I become." I learned really quick how he does that.

"I'm getting stoned on the set and the line producer comes over. 'Dice, there's a million cops on the set.' And I go, 'I've done a lot for the police. As a matter of fact, they want to smoke with me. Now walk away.'"

In recent years, you've also worked with some high-caliber directors. What was it like working with Martin Scorsese on Vinyl?
It was huge because Marty is the type of director that lets somebody go as deep as they're capable of going with that part. And trust me, what you saw onscreen was not the original way they envisioned it. He was more than open to everything I wanted to do. I told him, "Hey look, Marty, when I come to film this thing, I'm going to be completely stoned. I'm not going with the fake shit." And I'm not talking about cocaine; I've never touched any hard drugs in my life. But I did the weed thing.

Usually, when I smoke pot it's at night, when I'm home in my backyard just to chill. And here I am showing up at seven in the morning stoned out of my mind. There was one moment, we were shooting that big scene where they kill me – that was a three- or four-day shoot in Long Island – and I'm getting stoned on the set and the line producer comes over and he goes, "Dice, it's all over the place. The smell. There's a million cops on the set." And I go, "Look. I've done a lot for the police. As a matter of fact, they want to smoke with me. Nobody's putting us in jail for me smoking weed. Now walk away. Just leave me be." And Marty would just laugh. I wish I was friends with him for the last 30 years.

When did you meet him?
Here's a funny story. When my career took off, I had an apartment on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn in, like, 1990. I remember the phone ringing and my wife Trina goes, "The guy says it's Martin Scorsese." So I get on the phone. It sounds just like him. We'd laugh for a half hour and he'd hang up. And then it happened a couple more times. But I never believed it was him.

So when I met with him in New York for Vinyl, I said "Marty, I gotta ask you one thing, because I need it settled in my mind. Do you ever remember calling me years ago?" And he goes, "Yeah. I called a bunch of times." I go, "Well, I went with it, and I believed it was you, but I would never have asked, like a child, 'Is this really you?'" Then I go, "So why didn't you ever use me before?" He goes, "You had to grow into it." And we just started laughing like idiots.

Andrew Dice Clay

You also worked with Woody Allen on Blue Jasmine. What did you learn from working with Woody?
Well, I learned not to change any lines at the last moment. When I had to do that scene with Cate Blanchett in San Francisco we shot that part, I made some changes. So when we got on set, I sent my son, Max, to get Woody [laughs]. "Tell him I gotta see him right now." So Woody comes to the jewelry store when we're filming, and goes, "What do you wanna talk to me about?" And I go, "Well I made some adjustments." And he goes, "Well, what do you mean, adjustments?" And I go, "Look, you wrote the greatest script, but I say things a little different … " He goes, "And you're telling me this now? OK, I want you to do this with your son. Right in front of me. He'll play the Cate Blanchett part."

And as we're doing this scene, Cate Blanchett comes into the jewelry store. They had her change her dress in there behind the counter of the jewelry store. I was distracted seeing this beautiful girl in nylons. Like, "I gotta focus." Anyway, Woody looks at me and goes, "I love it. Do it the way you just did it. Beautiful." He's a low-key guy that way but he will let you create the character the way it needs to be done. When we did it, he came over and said, "We could do it again for safety but it was absolutely perfect." And I go, "Do it again anyway." But he really made me comfortable with it.

Andrew Dice ClayFrom left: LL Cool J, Andrew Dice Clay and Rick Rubin. Jeff Kravitz/Getty

Lastly, I recently did an interview with Rick Rubin, and we talked about your Day the Laughter Died album, which he produced. What was it about you two that clicked?
Me and Rick have an incredible relationship. He would tell me constantly, "You know, you're the end of comedy." And coming from Rick Rubin, who already had the reputation with rap of working with Run-DMC, it's amazing to hear that from him. He had an off-the-wall sense of humor that just got me. There was never any kind of screaming fights when I wanted to do The Day the Laughter Died in the midst of performing for 100,000 people a week. It was the ultimate late-night set in front of non-fans, whoever was in the club. I would go on at around 11pm, and stay on there for about three hours at Dangerfield's in New York. People would curse me out, walk out, and we just left it all on the album for everybody to hear. That album has become a lot of comics' favorite comedy album of all time. That was the beauty of Rick. I didn't come up there to prove anything at that point. I came up to be funny without nothing loaded.

You have a number of stand-up dates scheduled this summer. Will you be doing another TV special?
I don't even know if I'll do another special again. I loved what I did with Showtime with Indestructible. I did it with my sons opening the show playing music, and it was exciting as fuck. To do that as a family was what I wanted to do.

Then it must feel good to have them with you on Dice.
I'm so excited about the show. It feels really good. I'm happy about the way people have responded to Dice. The four letter word has definitely returned.

Netflix Orders Full Season of Marvel's 'The Punisher'

Jon Bernthal to reprise role of Frank Castle after wowing fans in 'Daredevil' Season Two

BY DANIEL KREPS April 29, 2016
Punisher; NetflixMarvel's beloved vigilante the Punisher will soon be the focus of his own Netflix series. Netflix

Marvel's beloved vigilante the Punisher will soon be the focus of his ownNetflix series after actor Jon Bernthal awed fans with his portrayal of the anti-hero on the second season of Daredevil. Netflix and Marvel confirmed they have green lit a full season of The Punisher, with Bernthal reprising the role of Frank Castle in the spinoff series.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, despite the Punisher's less-than-stellar success translating to the big screen, Netflix had been at work on creating a Bernthal-led Punisher series since January, nearly two months before the second season of Daredevil premiered.

Hannibal producer Steve Lightfoot will serve as showrunner on the latest Marvel series. "For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world," Lightfoot said in a statement. “After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel's Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own."

It's unclear whether the series will pick up where the Daredevil series left off, if it would serve as the character's origin story or if producers would tackle one of the Punisher's more fan favorite storylines like War Journal, The Slavers or its 1985 limited series. A premiere date was not revealed.

The Punisher joins comic book-turned-Netflix series for Daredevil, Jessica Jones, the upcoming Luke Cage (due out September 30th), the in-production Iron Fist and the superhero crossover series The Defenders.

The skull-suited, arsenal-toting hero has previously been seen in theaters in the form of a 1989's The Punisher starring Dolph Lundgren in the title role,2004's The Punisher with Thomas Jane and 2008's Punisher: War Zone with Ray Stevenson. All three struggled at the box office and were savaged by critics, although War Zone has gained a cult following from Punisher fans thanks to its graphic violence and its reverence to the tone of the comic.

Helen Mirren Sports Prince Tribute at White House Correspondents' Dinner

British actress Helen Mirren paid a perfect tribute to Prince at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night.

The 70-year-old Oscar winner showed up in a lacy purple dress with a purple "tattoo" just under her collarbone in the shape of the "Love Symbol" synonymous with the purple-loving pop star.

Prince, who was found dead on April 21 at age 57 in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota, once famously changed his name to the unpronounceable symbol.

Mirren said the ink was not permanent.

"I'd love to say that Prince himself did it in 1988 or something, instead of me in the bathroom this morning,"she told the Washington Post before the dinner.

Mirren won her best actress Oscar for playing a monarch in 2006's "The Queen."
