Imagine the bass groove of "Billie Jean" played on a BASS GUITAR...not a synthesizer (maybe I'm wrong, but I dont hear BASS, I hear keys). It worked as it was and the song is a classic, but just IMAGINE. That's all I'm saying. To me, it sounds plastic. As for the song being overrated, there are a few MJ tracks that "stand out" to me...The Way You Make Me Feel, Off the Wall, Working Day and Night, Man in the Mirror, Human Nature...to me, Billie Jean is not his most fantabulous work. I UNDERSTAND why folks think it is, because of the impact the song and video had, but I honestly prefer Wanna Be Startin Something. Just my opinion...

Wait...

Louis Johnson doesn't play the bass on "Billie Jean?" I think you're mistaken, bro. And I still have
no clue what you're talking about where it concerns funk standing up, authentic sounds, and why
"Billie Jean" is overrated.

Yep! Louis Johnson played the bass on "Billie Jean."

You're probably a sophisticated music lover but if you can fuck up Louis Johnson's masterful
playing with a keyboard, there is room for me to doubt the quality of your ears and taste, bro.

To each his own. It sounds like synth bass to me, or as if it's buried under the synth. Either way, that's what I mean by authentic. It has the sound of a lot of 80s music...electronic. Listen to Sly's "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa"...that's BASS. Maybe "overrated" is the wrong word...I didnt mean to hijack this thread and tick the MJ fans off (I shoulda known betta!), I just think MJ has other songs that are better than "Billie Jean". Kind of like the folks who think "Purple Rain" is Prince's best album...it's the easiest Prince album for a "non-fan" to listen to, but not his end all be all IMHO.

You can definitely tell that the base is being played by a base guitar during the pre-chorus section;
a synth does not sound like that. And you sound like a snobby elitist when you compare the base
heard in "Billie Jean" to the base heard in the Sly Stone song you mentioned: one song and one era
of music is not "better" than another. They are simply different! So, even the base line played by a
synth, for example, the base heard in Spandau Ballet's hit, "True", is authentic. I was snobby elitist
too when I was first coming up as a musician; I couldn't stand drum machines.

I'm not an ardent MJ fan: I'm interested in album mixing and songwriting/composition and the claims
you made are things I like discussing. Don't blame my questions on the level of stan-ness I have for
MJ.

Considering how close they once were do you think
Paul had any firsthand knowledge of MJ's "fondness"
for young boys? Do you think he just turned a blind eye
to a creepy situation?

I hope you're joking. MJ's "fondness" for children was not sexual in nature. If I'm not mistaken,
the kids who accused MJ of being sexually assaultive/molestive recanted their statements when
MJ passed away.

And that douchebag Wade Robson has also recanted, again, if I'm not mistaken.

.

Blind eye. As all the panty tossing and drooling in this thread suggests, MJ was at his impish, elfish yet cute and acceptable point in his surgical evolution/transition when he did most of his work with Sir Paul. Say what you will about talent, Paul can likely still nail his part in his 70s.

.

MJ only worked with Paul McCartney to appropriate the popularity of Lennon/McCartney and The Beatles for his own ascension. He was a strange man yet a very shrewd businessman known for taking and improving on historical themes in popular music.

.

Paul McCartney continues to be a musical icon, his latest album was so delicious "Looking At Her" would've been an amazing MJ record.

Why did you start a thread just to dump on Paul McCartney? You provided the opportunity.

Then explain to me how Carousel and the bass line of Billie Jean relate to McCartney/Jackson duets? There's a sticky to talk about all things MJ.

Nope.
Just trying to keep it on topic which is the dynamics/relationship of McCartney and Jackson. You seem quite willing to take it off topic to talk about MJ only. Looks to me that you started this thread as a way of avoiding the MJ sticky.

No my intentions with the thread are clear. To discuss MJ and Paul duets which we have been doing. Your just mad because this thread has not been locked. Thats not my problem. Nothing you have stated has anything to do with this thread. Your trying to derail the thread.

If this thread has derailed it because you derailed it.At least 50% of your posts make no mention of McCartney.
