To each his own. It sounds like synth bass to me, or as if it's buried under the synth. Either way, that's what I mean by authentic. It has the sound of a lot of 80s music...electronic. Listen to Sly's "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa"...that's BASS. Maybe "overrated" is the wrong word...I didnt mean to hijack this thread and tick the MJ fans off (I shoulda known betta!), I just think MJ has other songs that are better than "Billie Jean". Kind of like the folks who think "Purple Rain" is Prince's best album...it's the easiest Prince album for a "non-fan" to listen to, but not his end all be all IMHO.

You can definitely tell that the base is being played by a base guitar during the pre-chorus section;
a synth does not sound like that. And you sound like a snobby elitist when you compare the base
heard in "Billie Jean" to the base heard in the Sly Stone song you mentioned: one song and one era
of music is not "better" than another. They are simply different! So, even the base line played by a
synth, for example, the base heard in Spandau Ballet's hit, "True", is authentic. I was snobby elitist
too when I was first coming up as a musician; I couldn't stand drum machines.

I'm not an ardent MJ fan: I'm interested in album mixing and songwriting/composition and the claims
you made are things I like discussing. Don't blame my questions on the level of stan-ness I have for
MJ.
