Maxwell Talks Status of Duet Project, 2016 Album

Maxwell made sure to support his homegirl Alicia Keys during her 12th annual New York City benefit event, the Black Ball, which took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom Thursday night, Nov 5th.

The ball raises money for children and families in Africa and India affected by HIV. Maxwell told ABC Radio it was important for him to attend and support his longtime friend.

"It's great for me because its Alicia, Alicia is one of my best friends and, you know, I've watched her rise throughout her career -- we were assigned to Columbia Records together and then she moved to J Records, which obviously that's when everything took off," he said of their history together.

"We toured together on her first album, I mean, you know, we did a duet two years ago, which was thankfully number one forever, which was great," he continued, referring to "Fire We Make."

Back in 2013, the singer announced a duet project with Keys, which would rival Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's string of duets with from the 1960s. However, the crooner hints their joint album has been put on hold so Keys can complete her "incredible" upcoming studio effort.

"We can't wait, we can't wait, right now, you know, she has so much going on with this event and with all the things that she's going to do with her album, which is incredible by the way from what I've heard," Maxwell says of Alicia's follow-up to 2012's Girl on Fire. "But yeah, I'm excited. The future is bright, the future is bright."

"She's family, she's like my Tammi Terrell, that's how I call her," he adds.

Next year will see Maxwell releasing his fifth studio album, his first since 2009's BLACKsummers'night, which served as the first installment in the singer's SUMMERS trilogy.

I think he should bury that project for good. But then again he probably feels like he HAS to continue the trilogy because he talked so much about it and has already released part 1.

I don´t mind him working with Alicia but I´d much rather see him release a solo album in the vein of Urban Hang Suite or Embrya.

Those are two timeless and classic masterpieces.

I hope he leaves Alicia OUT OF KEY out of the process.

Co-sign. I don´t mind the occasional duet but I am really not interested in a Maxwell/Alicia collabo. That one song they did was aight but it didn´t really impress me.

Something about her rubs me the wrong way. I´m surprised to see that she gets so much respect from Maxwell and Prince. She´s aight but not really my cup of tea.

Her first two albums are excellent, after that is when she fell off, IMO. Since then, it's more about screeching some overdramatized message in her songs, which bores me to pieces. And no, Maxi definitely doesn't need to do a duet album with her, or anyone. As long as focuses on perfecting a great solo effort, as he has done multiple times in the past, then he's always going to have some of my money in his bank account. I wish he would grow his hair out some. The clean shaven, neatly trimmed gentleman look he's been rocking the past 6 years is okay, but I think he needs a change.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Co-sign on everything you said.

The first two Alica albums weren´t too bad, I liked them back then but they sounded sooooo derivative of other artists....like a remix album of a MaryJBlige album. lol Good for the time and good for her age but I am really not a big fan of her these days. wink

And yes, Maxwell is a singer that I enjoy best when he´s solo. Urban Hang Suite and Embrya are timeless masterpieces.

NOT a Keys fan. "Fire We Make" was HOT, but I can't imagine a duet album. Her vocal (in)abilities don't even come CLOSE to HIS. :-O

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.
