The Motown 25th Anniversary Special aired in the spring of 1983.As you know, this show featured Michael Jackson's stunning, amazing performance of "Billie Jean".I think that this performance really kicked Michaelmania into high gear. The nation was mesmerized.

This is really what started it all. It wasn't Thriller itself but this one performance is what set the music world ablaze and led to 1984 being 1984. Truly a once in a lifetime moment that won't happen again for a very long time.

1984 is "the" year of music for me. Even now, 31 years later, I have a 1984 playlist that I listen to all the time.

Now that you mention it, why don't music sites and streaming services have search functions where you can find music via the year it was released? Compiling every album by their years of release shouldn't be a challenge.

Because lots of people don't know in which year a particular song or album they like was released. Not everybody is an archivist! Let's take a song that was famous... David Bowie's Let's Dance... Tavares' Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel... What year were they released? I wouldn't know. With Prince I know everything of course, because I'm a fan, but how many people do you think know and like Kiss but don't know or care what year it was from?

"Let's Dance" by David Bowie is from early 1983.

"Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" is from late-spring 1976

smile I'm very good with years! lol....I know the year, and the time of year, most songs came out,lol

Cool! cool But y'all get my point, right? If somebody is looking for Let's Dance, they would look for the title or the artist. The only way I can imagine someone googling 1984 is if they're looking for George Orwell's novel. wink reading

Well for the archivists and musical experts who are more attentive to time, why can't that be an option? Nobody HAS to search for music by year but it's still an additional option that can still be beneficial in the long run. Say if somehow some way, somebody could not find a song that they remember fondly and can't get out of their heads yet don't know the name of song, the artist/ group, or the album the song is a part of yet can make a strong prediction on the time the song was released if they don't outright know the year. Searching by year can be a failsafe and narrow down the results to what was released within a specific year rather than having to dig through thousands of songs and albums to find the one they're looking for.

There's still a lot to sift through but I'd rather dig through a year's worth of albums than an entire collection of music dating back several decades. For those looking for a specific year in music to see what it included, there's no better way to do it than by having a search function designed to search by year.

Just a suggestion.

CoolMF

Gotta go with 1984 since that's when the 2nd generation of hip hop came on the scene- Run-DMC (Hard Times), Whodini (5 Minutes of Funk), and UTFO (Roxanne Roxanne) as a few examples.

And given that there was no Prince album in 1983, for a Prince fan, yes, it's a no brainer! But at the end of the day, there was good music and bad music in every year.

Be that as it may, the reason I can't stand them is because they're responsible for the worst, most overplayed Christmas single ever! In mid-December, you can't go anywhere without hearing this shit! If there was such a thing as Crimes Against Music, this would be it! pissed mad shoot2 xmas shoot3

Yes, that was good! And it proves the point I was making earlier: I love the song, I remember the video, but I couldn't for the life of me remember what year it was from. Oh well. I was 12 years old at the time! confused

"Love Is A Battlefied" was such a departure from Pat Benatar's earlier singles...and so was the video. She has said that, when she made this video,it was all heavily influenced by Michael Jackson's videos from that era."He's the one who raised the bar",she said."So suddently,I had to learn how to dance, lol".

The video for her song was directed by Bob Giraldi, same guy behind the videos for Beat It and Say Say Say.
