This is a tough call. But my vote goes to 1983.
Me too I love 1984,but I just feel like 1983 was a more important year.So many groundbreaking things were happening in 1983.I think of '83 as the year when the 80s finally became "the 80s"...you know what I mean? That year paved the way for everything that came later.

1983 was the year when Michael, Prince, & (the rookie/novice debut of) Madonna forced everyone to step their game up right from the jump.
SIDE NOTES:
a. Michael's Thriller video was the inspiration for Kool & The Gang's Misled video.
b. When every artist from the 1980's - 2010's mention the MPLS sound, they're really talking about Prince's 1999 album. And don't get me started about all of the Prince clones & wannabes (Ready For The World, anyone?) that came along after 1983.

Initially I would have said 1984. But after reading this thread, the choice isn't so clear! A lot of you have made persuasive arguments for 1983.
I'm probably biased toward 1984 simply because that was the year I graduated H.S.! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015 |
