PRINCE.. AND JANET JACKSON prince and janet jackson are two of my favorite artists ever, i've supported prince since watching him on american bandstand back in january 1980 and i've supported janet since buying her debut album back in late-82. anyways, i wanted to ask, is janet a fan of prince's? i've always heard that she is (and some huge janet fans also have claimed she is/was) but i have yet to see an interview/video/anything else where she states so. only link i know is that she talked about going to a prince concert back in 1981 but even since then i've always got the feeling she's a bigger fan of morris/the time. they were even gonna make a movie in the mid-80s and she has stated on several occasions how much she loved them (and lets not forget jam and lewis' help in her career). but has she ever specifically listed prince as an influence or even realy talked about him? cuz i saw her interview with The Tube in 1987 and she seemed kind of to diss his movies.

I've also thought for the longest time that Janet seems not a fan of Prince, but of The Time, however I would love for a hardcore JanFan to prove me wrong. She sounded like him because of Jam and Lewis, but IDK if that necessarily meant SHE herself was a fan. Some heresay/rumors I've heard though: they were to collaborate in both 1986 and 1989 but both times she decided against doing duets so early in her career. She turned down her brother Michael for the same reason. Supposedly, they hung around Paisley Park in the '90s. Her favorite P song is "Soft and Wet". But of course, these are all rumors I've heard over the years without actually seeing sources, so IDK. Maybe do, just not like did before

Janet somewhat had to be attracted to Prince's style of music because she went to JIMMY & Lewis, whom made her a star, to produce her only albums that had substance. I am wondering if Prince was couselded anonymously to produce her albums along with JIMMY & Lewis. The duo was good, but as you can see, not great without Prince!

Janet is a total fan of Prince, but the media was having a field day for Under The Cherry Moon flopping at the box office.

Prince has performed WHYDFML in his concerts saying "who wrote this???" insinuating he ghostwrote it.

good response and very true, i remember that when utcm bombed, the media gleefully jumped on board and kept reminding the common folk that prince's movie had flopped loll. i guess i thought janet's response ("well you have to admire prince making the whole movie himself") semed kindof a nice way of saying it was subpar

agreed. i meant in the '80s (control and a little bit of rhythm nation) were prince-ly. but janet went on to forge her own unique sound in the '90s. i was happy that people were FINALLY becoming hip to her work after control came out. before that it seemed like everybody thought of janet the same way they thought of latoya and that sure as hell aint a compliment!

Yeah, and didn't WHYDFML come from a jam session between the three (Jam, Lewis, Prince)? I forgot where I read it, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe do, just not like did before

During a jam at Prince's 1986 birthday show, he remarked that he didn't want any of the jam elements to show up on Jimmy Jam's next record, and sang "What Have You Done For Me Lately" at the beginning of "Controversy".

Facts:
Someone posted a recent interview of Jimmy Jam--in whcih he stated that they wantes Prince for a duet on "Love Will Never Do Without You" --back then while recording "Rythmn Nation" CD.
She sat with Jimmy and Tery when the City of Minneapolis dedicated a day to Prince back around....2001...
My opinion:
Love Will Never Do is here answer to Mr. Nelson's song "4Ever N My Life".
Severla of her concepts have been from Prince's songs
Her session musicians on "That's The Way Love Goes" were dredited as "The Flow" in the CD booklet.. 1 year after "0+> CD".
"Runaway" similar to "Around The World N a Day"
"Escapade" is like an answer to "Raspberry Beret" and "Around The World N a Day"..
Terrence Trent D'Abry mention a CDs worth of material that they once recorded over a few days in Minneapolis, but Sony-Columbia and Warner Brothers could not come to an agreement to release it.
I assume the same might have happened with Janet..
Influenced...Fan..
Have they met, and talked? Sure.
I think as the major influence on Jimmy and Terry's production of some of her stuff.
Jam & Lewis production style is more slick and polished that Mr. Nelson's. I think they alone may be a better fit.
Prince was considering allowing Flyte Tyme to re-produce some of his unreleased stuff.. (Maybe that was way before The Original 7 could not use thier name....and some O7 members spoke ill of him in an interview.)

jimmy said whydfml was gonna be on his and terry's album but janet heard the track and asked if she could have it.he said the track was done not the lyrics, all the lyrics for the control album came from jimmy, terry and janet spending time together, talking and learning about her life. somebody ontwitter told jimmy prince always performs that song in concert, jimmy seemed honored and happy, butthen someone told him prince implies that he wrote it and jimmy's response was something along the lines of 'he may think he wrote it'.

Lol! I totally remember him tweeting that. I really hate how some people try to imply that Janet somehow owes Prince her career. I don't see it. Yes Control does have that Minneapolis sound, but that's only because her producers are from there. I guess Prince being Jimmy and Terry's band leader/boss thought that anything they produced while with him was all his including WHYDFML. Whenever he performs that song people automatically say "Oh he's performing Janet's song". BlackCat1985

I never knew that they were all there, that's cool. I also heard they used to hang around the Glam Slam club back in the '90s. And something about Prince premiering Rhythm Nation movie at the club. Maybe do, just not like did before
