A fan and a muse are 2 completely different things.

Let me state it another way, any artist who can't find some things 2 appreciate about Prince as an artist, (4 my taste ONLY) isn't worth my time. It's like a basketball ball player not like Jordan. It simply doesn't make a lot of sense 2 me.

I read an excerpt of Jason Draper's book about P, and he stated that after the FCC was launching an investigation on Janet's wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl, Prince told Entertainment Weekly that they were taking it too far and he asked "what's the point?"

Cool to see he stuck up for her there. This was the same year Janet did one of those "Prince Show" segments on SNL. Also, does anyone remember that early-2000s interview where Prince called Michael Jackson a genius and Janet "genius's sister"? Did he say "genius sister" or "genius' sister"? Because that could change the whole answer lol

It was in a Muchmusic interview during the Rhythm Nation era she was talking about enjoying Prince in junior high when she enjoyed when he did soft and wet. And then something about his next album and she was trying not to blush and grinning. I saw this clip during the 1996 Egos & Icons special.

There was another interview at some point in the 80's where she's discussing being a mike fan or a prince fan, and she said definitely a prince a fan though she was laughing when doing so...

Genius sister has been a running joke for me for years because of that interview LOL if prince does indeed enjoy her as a genius and not a sister of a genius, that's his narcissism talking, cause she did in her entire career what he couldn't do with his female artists that all looked like him, and at some point they did resemble each other ala rhythm nation era/nude tour lol sorry but it's true, I really love him though

It says right in the liner notes of Design Of A Decade, she was a fan of Prince first, then fell in love with The Time.

Wow thanks for this post, I never knew most of these! I wish I could find those videos though, no such luck.

I'm just trying to imagine Mike, at the height of his rivalry with Prince (I mean, c'mon, there have been enough sources to prove that they had some sort of fued, even if not meanspirited), hearing his baby sister pick Prince above him! lol

lol Yeah, Janet hit the goldmine that none of Prince's female protegees were able to hit. Thank God he didn't get his hands on her -- we would get "Jackson 6" featuring Latoya and Rebbie, probably with 1 album that ends up being underpromoted

In my opinion, this era (1990) was when the two of them looked the sexiest they ever have. Although I think my overall FAVORITE would be in the eighties before "Control"... Janet looked really cute, in a babyish way lol

Prince thinks it's so similar to "Controversy", that he did write it. Jam and Lewis have addressed this many times. Obviously Prince loves the song though, because it's been a part of his setlist for a long time now. He never plays Phil Collins' 1999-inspired "Sussudio", for example.

I suspect WHYDFML, is one of the reasons Prince has such a love/hate relationship with FlyteTyme. If WHYDFML is based on Controversy, it more or less improves upon the original, by giving it more melody and universal, female-friendly lyrics. WHYDFML is the "Single Ladies" of it's era. I can imagine Prince, sensing his own limitations a bit and wishing he had nailed as many songwriting aspects with the core rhythmic idea at the center of the two songs. And similarly, I think Flytetyme sees Prince as an inspiration, and the embodiment of the all around talent that, to date, appears a bit outside their grasp.

I think Jam and Lewis always have Prince in the back of their minds when writing. I think to some extent their work with Janet is kind of a peek at what they might have done with Prince, had he allowed them to. My favorite Janet song is "When I Think Of You" and in my imagination, I think a Prince and Janet duet on that wold have been amazing.

If you really want to see Janet talking about soft and wet it should be somewhere in the following clip:

That's part 1 - but I'm certain it is somewhere in the 'Egos and Icons' documentary

Janet had to get some influence from prince....Because she delved deep into her sensual sexuality after the RN album in HEAVY form!

I've seen footage from his Tokyo Nude Tour (that aired on NBC about 25 years ago) where he performs the song lust like you all said. But I haven't heard about recent performances that Cinny mentioned, interesting.

Oh, okay. That's still different from the one I saw, the one I saw was from Tokyo, your reference is from a PP show.

During a jam at Prince's 1986 birthday show, he remarked that he didn't want any of the jam elements to show up on Jimmy Jam's next record, and sang "What Have You Done For Me Lately" at the beginning of "Controversy".

I thought Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis originally wrote WHYDFML for Sharon Bryant, but I could be confusing that story for another song on the Control album.

Interesting!

The entire "Control" album, I believe was offered 2 Sharon Bryant, but she wasn't interested. Bet she's KICKIN' herself 4 THAT decision all these years later! Quite honestly, I don't think it would have been a QUARTER of the hit it was 4 Janet had Bryant recorded it. She doesn't have the same level of charisma that Jackson does. And I don't think the voice would have matched the song either. smile

lol

Janet has long spoken about her love of Prince, from her stories of attending a Prince/The Time/Vanity 6 concert and how uncomfortable she was with her mother sitting right beside her to confessing her love for him during a 2001 visit to TRL. There was a story, I believe in an unauthorized MJ book, about Prince visiting Hayvenhurst to have dinner with Michael, Janet and LaToya, and how spent most of the night hitting on LaToya lol. She was clearly his type, and she even remade his song "Private Joy". I'd have loved to have seen what P would have done on Janet's LWNDWY, and would still LOVE for them to work together, but he's covered "Lately" in concert many times and she has her own version of "Do Me Baby" with "Would You Mind" from the ALL FOR YOU album, so I guess that'll have to do for now lol. There is a pic of them together somewhere on the line--I could swear I saw it many years ago, and I think it was during the Velvet Rope era.
