Mark Ronson talks about Uptown Funk & Uptown Special on BBC Radio 2 with Jo Whiley (November 10 2014)

  • "[Last night, before the release of Uptown Funk] I was having basically a heart attack because someone messed up the radio edit at the last minute. So I’m on the phone at 5am to my mastering partner in New York trying to fix it. But anyway, it’s a new day!"

  • "We worked on this song for 7 months and Bruno Mars, who I worked on the song with, he’s a pretty much perfectionist. I thought I was…until I started working with him. We wanted to get this song to this place where we just thought it was great."

  • "It’s a funk song in a way, so it’s not supposed to have a real chorus - like a traditional pop song. We had to get it to the point where we thought it was a real funk song."

  • "[The perfectionism] was like a chain. I was driving the people underneath me mad. And [Bruno] was definitely driving me mad as well. It was like a driving-you-mad tree.]

  • "Thankfully, the thing about performing [on SNL] as a side man to Bruno Mars, one of the world’s greatest living entertainers, is that I don’t have to do too much. It’s really exciting. I kind of know what the choreography and the stuff is going to be. I’m always asking Bruno like, "Can you just give me one move that I just stick to the whole time? I know you guys are going to look amazing. Just one move!" And he’s like, "Alright. You just do this."

Maybe Bruno should have listen to prince's brand new cut "Gold Standard"! From his number 1#album "Art Official Age". Now that is REAL FUNK!

Yeah, but that's the only track on the entire album that is. And apparently Miss Prince must be getting old because after he did that jam, he slowed everything else down to midtempo so his old ass could sit down and rest awhile. I guess Miss Thang's feet got to hurting in those orthapedic flip flops he's been sporting lately. Give him some Geritol and maybe he'll pick the pace back up with the next album. lol

I like the song. It has that old school flair and I think Bruno is really showing some growth. We need more current artists that dare to be creative. At least Bruno is trying to make quality music unlike these other pop stars who come out with the same boring gutter garbage.

Pretty good production (I'm a huge Ronson fan). Mediocre composition. Locked Out Of Heaven was a far superior piece of writing that I think will stand the test of time. This, not so much.

This will go down a storm on the live front though because it has the right energy.

Yeah, it's ageless alright. They've been playing that type of shit in the white gay clubs since the 1990s. That kind of music is the result of when the white gay crowd took over gay black and hispanic house music, stripped it of all funk and disco rhythms it had, and turned it into trance. The mainstream artists picked it up later in the 2000s and I don't know what they call it now, but it still sounds like it did 15 years ago. It wasn't funky then and it still ain't funky. The only difference now is, people have added lyrics to it. Back then it was just a repetitive extremely fast beat with some extremely dark sounding synthesizers to it. Actually, it was quite the opposite of shit hop though. It was actually too fast to dance to and all they did was hop around like rabbits on pogo sticks on the dance floor looking like fools. Poor rhythmless thangs. lol

.

Hell, I guess Prince would get worn out and have to sit down and rest and do midtempo mess after something like that. That mess would make even a young person in their 20s dizzy with all that damn hopping around, let alone an old bitch like Prince. But of course, their asses were strung out on them damn club drugs back then. lol

And the amount of music snobbery on this thread is shocking.

Its amazing how a little funk jam has so many people on this board pressed lol I have to laugh at these "music critics" who are feeling themselves and their opinions a bit too much--because while they are too busy doing their best to bash a legitimately great song, the rest of the world is busy enjoying the song for what it is and giving Mark and Bruno their due props music

spit The masses? Honey, those strong sales have come from his fans buying the album as soon as it comes out without even hearing it first. This happens every time Prince puts out a new album. And once his all his fans already have it, the sales drop, like usual.

.

But even if the masses did like it, and yes, I've seen it has gotten good reviews from the press, this is the same press that praises all the other bullshit music that's out these days so if the press likes it, then that means the album is no different than everyone else's music these days. Getting good reviews from the press these days is not an indication of an album being good because the press does not like actual good music these days. If they liked actual good music, the state of music wouldn't be in the mess it is in these days.

.

I do find it hilarious though, that when Prince doesn't care about or even puts the masses down, so do the fams. They're right there along with him putting the masses down also. And when Prince starts to care about attracting the masses, all of a sudden, the fams conveniently change their minds and start caring about the masses also. Coincidence? I think not. It's a case of blind sheep bowing down and not only kissing Prince's ass, but going further and tossing his salad.

So is this going to be a Mark Ronson album with a cameo track with Bruno Mars or a Bruno Mars album? This is a good track too.

It's Mark's album and he has a bunch of guest artists doing the lead vocals for each song.

Mark Ronson will release his new album 'Uptown Special' on January 23rd, with lead single 'Uptown Funk' - co-written by and featuring Bruno Mars - preceding it on January 9th.

Andrew Wyatt (one half of Swedish production team Miike Snow), Hudson Mohawke, James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco and Kevin Parker of Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala all collaborated on the album in some way, as well as 23-year-old newcomer Keyone Starr, whom Ronson and his producer Jeff Bhasker discovered in a Mississippi gospel choir. Most of the album's lyrics - although not those of the lead single - were written by American author Michael Chabon, whom Ronson describes as his 'favourite living author'.

The music is largely influenced by his teenage years spent growing up in New York City.

"No matter how my taste in music and DJ-ing veers over the years, I always find myself coming back to that music I would play out in hip-hop clubs in NY in the late 90s/early 2000s”, he said. "Biggie, Chaka Khan, Amerie, Boz Scaggs, Missy, Earth Wind & Fire, N.O.R.E….Those songs would set alight the dance floor… Before smart phones, bottle service and smoking bans, people came to the club, found their spot and stayed all night, absorbed in the music. With Uptown Special I set out to capture the feeling I remember from those New York nights."
