Pharrell's songs don't have a lasting appeal...

Don'tmisquite me. The dude is a great producer and while I won't come out and say that he sold out delving into the pop/ retro-pop sound that was booming last year and is still somewhat prevalent now (shoot, he helped bring that retro sound back) but the songs on his album just become unbearably annoying after multiple listens and feel more and more like pop-lite every time I hear them.

We all know "Happy" and I'm pretty sure after the radio drove that song into the eardrums for several months, all the people that the song originally brought joy to wished they had guns but my favorite song on GIRL was "Brand New". It had a smooth, light, upbeat vibe and it was a great dance track that I couldn't get enough of; it was my go-to track and as much as people wanted "Gust of Wind" to be a single, I wanted "Brand New" to be a single. All that unexpectedly flew out the window one day when it started playing on my phone and a feeling of disgust just hit me and I quickly changed the song. Every time it would play I would immediately whip out my phone and change the song till I just had enough and deleted it. I then listened to some other tracks on the album (i.e. "Gust of Wind", "Come and Get it Bae", and that one he did with Miley (if CAGIB isn't the one)) and they all just felt so weak and did absolutely nothing for me.

It's possible that I burnt myself out on "Brand New" but I think its strange that burning myself out on a single song (beside "Happy") caused me to dislike the rest of his songs. Admittedly I never listened to the entire album before this happened but just single song of his is making me hesitant to hear the rest of GIRL.

Does anyone else feel this way about Pharrell's music? Or is it just me?

EDIT: When I say "Pharrell's music", I'm NOT talking about all of his music. I'm talking about the pop-lite direction he appears to be going in now with GIRL being the deputation of that notion. Basically, what do you think about GIRL's music? It doesn't have a lasting appeal to me and it's easy to burn yourself out on the songs to the point where you never want to hear them again (or at least for a long time).

I gotta disagree....I'm still enjoying his album music

It's the type of album where, every month or so,I find a new favorite song. When it was first released,my favorite song was "Hunter"...then "Gust Of Wind".....then "Marilyn Monroe" lol

Currently,I'm having alot of fun with "Gush" headbang This is one of those albums where damn near every song is worthy of being a single.Album of the year, imo.

I demand that you sit down and listen to the album on some good headphones. There's much to like on this album lol and I'm saying this as someone who wasn't a huge Pharrell fan before. For example,I didn't like his first solo album at all.

I guess its a personal taste thing, but yeah I agree with the OP, I buy his albums and I get tired of them so quickly. I just looked at the play count in my Itunes for GIRL and i played each song only a total of 3 times.. kind of a waste of money..

With the first two N.E.R.D. albums I actually played them quite a bit, the last two not so much.. and his solo work, very little.

Change it one more time..

I should've been more specific. My fault, when referring to Pharrell's music I was referring to the pop direction he seems to be going in now with GIRL as an example of that. I'll have to edit the OP.

I disagree. It's 12 years later and I'm still jamming NERD's In Search Of album. Not to mention the stuff he did as part of the Neptunes. Say what you want about "Happy" but I guarantee that in ten years we'll still bob our heads to it. That's a classic song.

I think that it's the same with ANY song that is overplayed.

After the ten thousandth time that you hear it, the song loses its appeal.

But, like thesoulbrother stated...10 years from now if it comes on the radio, everyone will be smiling and singing along.

I edited the OPEN to what I truly meant to say. I wasn't talking about ALL of Pharrell's music, I was talking about the music off of GIRL and the direction he seems to be taking his music using that album as an example. Yeah, if they stopped playing "Happy" for 10 years and I heard it on the radio one day in 2024 then I'd be jamming to it as well. And I really like the song, especially when it came out but it was EVERYWHERE throughout the first half or so of this year and grounded its charm to dust with the sheer amount of overexposure it got. That's also a problem with radio today, almost any sing that's at least half decent gets shoved down our throats.

lol,he's no Luther but I think he sounds OK.

The thing that stands out about his songs is...the groove! He can come up with some hot beats, grooves and hooks.People couldn't get "Happy" out of their heads for weeks.

nod people seem to forget that Pharrell is a real musician. He can play drums and keyboards but because he's so closely associated with hip-hop,people assume he has no real talent.

In my book, if u "recreate" someone else's notes..........it is the essense of sampling.
