Okay, do all of you really think even THIS song is not a classic?

Janet hasn't changed her style. She's been cooing about how "moist" she is for over 20 yrs. Aside from losing the actual talent of JJ&TL who knew how to overproduce tracks to distract from her vocal limitations, a big part of her problem is that she fails at reinvention, is redundant and has become predictable/stale.

Do you think her style from, say, Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope was the same? The sound was the same?

If it weren't for her pimp/husband, Beyonce would have been irrelevant way sooner than now. I think she's already past her heyday but is being so heavily marketed and promoted that the average listener think she's got some kind of stellar output still. All of her stuff is redundant. Besides, you were dead wrong for comparing Beyonce to Janet's Discipline album, what does one have to do with the other? lol Beywance has a team that pays off the media to keep her relevant. At least Janet changed her style and sound up a bit. Beyonce is gonna be in the same blonde weave and leotard for the next 50 years singing about "girl power" BS.

I guess the "pimp/husband" idea could be why Janet's in Dubai? Unsure.

.

I only mention Discipline because it was her last album, and nobody cared.

.

And if "media payments" made music like "B Day", "Beyonce", and Countdown...I think Janet should get a payment plan. Maybe her (pimp) husband could foot the bill?

No but I'm hard pressed to see the difference between janet. and Discipline... 20 Y.O...Damita Jo...etc., etc. Ever since Janet discovered sex and diet pills, her theme has largely been the same.

Okay, I see what you're saying. Was Jermaine Dupri the producer on all of those albums?

It's kinda true she has been in a sex slump since janet.

She should do what Solange did and find an up-and-comer with a fresh idea to produce her. And it might work commercially because of who she is. It definitely would work artistically.

Janet shits on every female pop star but Madonna to whom she is damn near equal. Her influence spans Chris Brown to JT to Beyonce to even Mariah to Paula Abdul to JLo to Britney to basically anyone in the 50 million albums sold club. I don't know why some dumb org troll whores have always had a twist in their tampon about Janet. A woman can be funky and fresh and also rely on some help from some of Prince's former protege's bandmates and so the fuck what? She has to equal or surpass or even be compared to her brother? I'll never get over Janet...the best of the best of the best and the last of showbiz true royalty and probably the most evasive, introverted and intriguing celebrity of all time (to me).

Far as the music goes

1. VR

2. Control

3. RN1814

3. janet.

5. Damita Jo

5. Discipline

7. 20 Y.O.

8. All 4 U

9. Janet Jackson

10. Dream Street

My fave Janet song is Got Til It's Gone. If you don't feel a hump or a something in your something when that shit plays, you don't have a pulse.

lol lol YASS!!! And about Madonna, Janet may not have sold as much as her, partly because her output wasn't nearly as frequent as Madonna's in both of their heyday, but as for influence and her stamp being on this generation of pop stars, she trumps Madonna handily on many different levels.

"Black Cat" was yet another example of Janet copycatting Michael. It was a very cheesy and transparent attempt at a "Dirty Diana". Lyrically it's atrocious... Tell this stupidity to ACTUAL rock artists like Tommy Lee and Lemmy, who've praised the song. Your taste in music is clearly dubious at best (and so is your fictitious "classmate"'s). lol

Surely it can't be a cringy as:

"your butt is mine"

or

"We Can Change The World
Tomorrow

If You Don't Like What I'm

utter crap!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol lol lol lol

Gotta Love MJ, but you are right. Whenever I listen to "Bad", that part of the song makes me cringe. Anytime Prince balked at the chance of dueting with him on that track, you know something was wrong. He once famously said "Who's going to be saying the 'Yo butt is mine' line, 'cause you sho' ain't sayin' that to me!"

Fails at reinvention? Who exactly are you talking about? Mariah or J-LO? Because those two tricks look EXACTLY THE SAME every time they put out a new CD. Janet is one of the QUEENS of reinvention. With each album, with each new video she looked different and brought it as far as her image went. From RN all the way through to All For You, her personal style totally evolved. And her music spanned several genres, encompassing Pop, R&B, Rock, Big Band, and even opera. Next time, before you put finger to keyboard, you need to know what the fuck you're talking about.

And I've got two examples of him copying her. One was when he chose to have Herb Ritts direct a video of him in a desert, cavorting with a supermodel ala LOVE WILL NEVER DO...

And he copycatted her another time with the last few minutes of BLACK OR WHITE, which is nearly identical to Janet's glass-breakin' rooftop dance to THE KNOWLEDGE in the RHYTHM NATION mini-movie...

What "tired, old ass, oft-used insults" are you referring to, Ms.? I'm a big fan of Janet myself. I have [mostly] all of her albums. I'm also a realist too. You know damn well her voice is not really that good. She needs good songs. JJ & TL provided what she needed to have a REAL music career. I feel the exact same way about Madonna.....take away her producers & she ain't shit. smile

Well, even though I like a lot of Mariah's music, she doesn't change her look, sound or anything. She's very paint by numbers. I honestly don't think anyone can truly say that Janet was predictable.

I never get these comparisons. I also hate when one tries to belittle another to make who they are rooting for look good. Just respect both people in their own rights....damn!

Janet had some great songs but let's face it, she can't sing on stage without lipsyncing........she can't really "sing" period. (Yes, I know some folks are going to bring up Beyonce at Barack Obamas Inarguration blah blah blah) but she does sing live too. Has Janet really ever? When it comes to singing Janet can't compare to Beyonce. As for the songs itself Beyonce could definitely do a lot better but that's the thing, she could always do better if put with the right team to make that happen. Janet on the other hand, I can't really say that there would be much improvement for her besides the bad music that she put out as of late or lightening striking her vocal chords and magically she attains the ability to sing like a bird. Bottom line, if Janet can again reach the success that she once had in the 80's/90's that's great but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, if at all and that's unfortunate.

I respect both women, though.

Janet Jackson doesn't have to reach any plateaus that she once attained because her legacy, which Beyonce has benefited from, is etched in stone. She built the house that Beyonce and most of the other current pop/R&B divas live in, and she doesn't have to "catch up to" whatever they are doing, because she's already done it.

And she can sing. Live.
