I grew up with this song, it's the ultimate G funk song of all time... and the only stuff that pops in my mind when I hear "hip hop"

Not sure, but mine would be one of these:

Five Minutes Of Funk ~ Whodini

Rapper's Delight ~ Sugarhill Gang

Jam On It ~ Newcleus

Request Line ~ Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three

Freedom ~ Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yes he was. Unfortunately his death and Baatin's death pretty much

spelled the end for a promising rap group Slum Village.

Missfee if I had to have a survival pack of 5 rap albums Like Water

for Chocolate would be one of them.

I can never commit to questions like this -- and here is no exception. But I can get it down to a likely two...

Gang Starr, "Manifest" (Remix) -- That opening "Night in Tunisia" riff, the congas, the rhythm guitar, the brass, Guru's distinctive voice. Just perfect.

Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, "T.R.O.Y." -- I only moderately dug this track when it first dropped. But this song now can bring me close to tears. Such heartfelt nostalgia. And arguably the most evocative use of a sample (Tom's Scott's "Today") in all of hip hop.

Wow! I used to slay a many B-Boy in my neighborhood with "Clear" breakdancing. I used to read Marvel comic books with "The Smurf" in the background (can't explain why). Seems like every Saturday night, "The Smurf" used to be on the radio while reading my books. I guess I could blame good commercial radio programming! wink razz
