The Bruno Mars Thread Part 8: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN CALLED, HE WANTS HIS CLOTHES BACK! (Post #112)

My last Bruno Mars thread closed itself, and I was going to retire the threads for awhile. But then this happened and I just had to make another thread to post it.

Meet Zumyah Thorpe, an 11 year old girl who was in a horrific car accident last year

BrunoMars

Last year a drunk driver plowed into the car of 11-year-old Zumyah Thorpe.

The accident killed her pregnant mother and two of her sisters. And although Zumyah survived, she was left with a severe head injury that required doctors to remove part of her skull. Nearly 70 percent of patients who are in this same condition do not survive. And those who do are often left without the ability to walk, talk or eat on their own.

But with a little help from her favorite musician, Zumyah is beating the odds. Every night, nurses at the hospital played Bruno Mars for Zumyah. Doctors say this music therapy is what helped Zumyah recover quicker than most, and even start walking again. Then the biggest surprise came when doctors tested Zumyah's language skills.

"I asked her who her favorite singer was and she said 'Bruno Mars' as quick as anyone would say any singer," says Zumyah's doctor who quickly pulled up "(You're Amazing) Just the Way You Are" on her iPhone. "And she just started singing every single word. It definitely brought a tear to my eye."

Zumyah's doctor says her ability to recite those Bruno Mars lyrics is the key to her amazing recovery. "I am absolutely convinced that singing those Bruno Mars songs and being able to say 'Bruno Mars' is in itself a miracle."

Now back at school, Zumyah can be seen singing and dancing through the halls, all while wearing a larger than life smile. Watch the video above to see Zumyah's reaction on live TV when she learns she will get to hear Bruno Mars in concert!

Well this story got to Bruno, and he wanted to meet her. She went to his concert in Cleveland and what happened last night was something beautiful, wonderful and something that will give her incredible memories for the rest of her life! touched

A reviewer covering last night's concert said this about the special moment:

....But I digress. I was telling you about his ability very nearly to reduce a he-man newspaper guy into a blubbering fool.

Mars won his first Grammy for his performance of his song "Just the Way You Are,'' and as you might expect, he trotted it out Saturday night.

Only he preceded it with a video of a young girl who lost most of her family when a drunk driver ran a red light. The 11-year-old suffered severe injuries – including being blinded as a result of the accident.

Now I've seen artists try to tug on heartstrings – it almost always strikes me as a clunky, forced gambit akin to wearing a Browns jersey or talking up the Cavs or Tribe during a show, when you KNOW they either can't stand football, or wouldn't know a basketball if you hit 'em with it.

What Mars did was nothing like that. The girl's name is Zamyah Thorpe -- I got the spelling Sunday morning from Q spokeswoman Jenn Yokley, and the last name from a reader who commented here – and she was at the show. Mars came off the stage and sang "Just the Way You Are'' with her in his arms.

It was at that moment, watching Zamyah's smile, which was brighter than all the pyrotechnics and spotlights combined, that I, uh, got something under my contact lens that caused my eyes to water as if I'd been slicing onions for a month....

What Bruno tweeted about Zumyah:

@brunomars: Tonight’s show was dedicated to this amazing young woman. I love you Zumyah

@brunomars: Zumyah tonight you gave my band and I something we’ve never felt before. You’re an inspiration to the world! #WeLoveYouZumyah

She also got a private concert from Bruno before the show and he wrote and sang a new song just for her! mushy

Bruno Mars inspired by local girl's miracle recovery

CLEVELAND -- Among the thousands who came out for the Bruno Mars concert Saturday night at the Q, was a little girl Bruno says will always have a special place in his heart.

Zumyah Thorpe, 11, suffered a severe brain injury after a drunk driver slammed into her mother's car last year.

Her pregnant mother and two younger sisters passed away in the horrific accident and Zumyah was not expected to survive.

But survive she did and doctors credit Bruno Mars' music with helping to save her life.

"No one can really understand what we've gone through when you see a child that's in a coma and unable to walk, talk," recalled Zumyah's grandmother Ronda. "When she actually wakes up and is able to speak the first thing she does is sing the one Bruno song which is 'I'm Amazing'(Just The Way You Are)."

Nurses at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital played Bruno every night throughout Zumyah's recovery.

So moved by her story Bruno arranged for a private meeting with Zumyah and her grandparents before his Cleveland concert.

Our cameras were not allowed inside but Zumyah's grandmother says he performed four songs during a private concert Saturday afternoon and even dedicated a new song called 'Zumyah's Day' to the young girl.

"He gave me this (holding a teddy bear)….a bag with a lot of stuff," said Zumyah afterwards, smiling from ear to ear.

"What else did he give you?" nudged her grandmother.

"A kiss...he gave me a kiss....right here," exclaimed Zumyah pointing to her cheek.

"He says I've done the big shows, the Super Bowl…but there has not been one story that has touched his heart as this story has," continued Zumyah's grandmother. "He said it was very emotional for him and that he's just so thankful that we allowed him into our lives as well."

During the actual concert Saturday night, Bruno jumped off the stage and into the crowd where he embraced Zumyah and sang her favorite song 'Just The Way You Are.'

Fans say he also handed Zumyah his guitar and hat...and there were very few dry eyes in the arena after his special dedication to an amazing young lady.

I've got to say, I have NEVER seen Bruno so touched and moved by a fan before, and you could hear the emotion in his voice as he sang to her. That girl has been through a lot and its amazing she survived and is out of the coma. And its wonderful that she got to meet the man that helped her with her recovery with his music. This will be an event she will remember for the rest of her life! Thank you Bruno and Zumyah, God bless you both! biggrin

^Thanks Shawy! Yeah I've been mia on the Bruno threads here for a minute, been too busy to post things. But this story was too beautiful not to post! I'm so happy for Zumyah that she got to experience this incredible highlight in her life after surviving such a horrible crash that took her mother and sisters sad And I'm so proud of Bruno for giving her an incredible and unforgettable night at his concerts. The beauty of this whole story is that they both inspire each other and have given each other something valuable that will stay with them for the rest of their lives nod

I really like this guy. I'm only familiar with his "hits" so far but I think he's going to be around for a long time. Top-notch performer and seems like a decent, humane guy. I'm gonna have to see him live one of these days. The first time I ever saw this guy perform was the Grammys a few years ago and it was pretty apparent that he was a legend in the making. Class act!

tbh i'm gonna be disappointed if he doesn't go weird & risky for the 3rd album,, gorilla, though its lyrics are kinda funny, was an evolution musically and lyrically.... I hope he does that in a better way on his upcoming material. i respect what he did so far in terms of building a fanbase and being a household name for the rest of the decade, that way he'll manage to make his output relevant & successful yet good and accessible

Oh trust me, I am dying for him to have his "F the record company moment" and go off a creative cliff to show us what he's got up his sleeve. Get the popcorn out! Once he knows he has his fanbase locked in, that might be the moment where he changes directions and really shocks us! popcorn popcorn

Miracle girl still smiling after Bruno Mars concert

SOLON, Ohio -- Zumyah Thorpe is still smiling and dancing since Saturday's Bruno Mars concert where she met the singer and was serenaded by him at the end of the show.

He showered her with gifts including a teddy bear, his hat, guitar, signed picture and tour jacket just to name a few. She felt more than special Zumyah said " I'm a super star."

Bruno Mars gave her a gift of a lifetime, Zumyah said "He means a lot to me, he put a lot of hope into my heart. If I want to be a dancer when I get older, I can. I can do whatever I want to accomplish, I can."

Zumyah's Grandparents, Ronald and Alonzo Thorpe were overwhelmed with gratitude, but had no idea Bruno's gestures would make news around the world. Mars shared Zumyah's story with thousands of his Facebook fans, also tweeted about how she inspired him and posted a selfie on Instagram.

"He said I'm gonna keep this in my phone to remind me of you I said that was awesome and I said I really appreciate what you did and he said it's an honor", Alonzo said.

Bruno's fans at the Q were also brought to tears and smiles by Zumyah's story that played during the concert. His music helped her recover, but there's still a long road ahead. The accident damaged four parts of her brain, but her grandparents encouraged her to fight on.

"It still does not stop her from achieving her goals, she has to set them and strive for them", Ronda said.

Bruno's sincerity gives her strength too.

"He says I'll be with you every step of the way you're in my life, you're in my heart forever...", Ronda said.

cry Zumyah and Bruno now share a beautiful and special bond for life. She has touched him in a way no one else has. Thank you Zumyah!

Yeah I like his music and I hope he doesn't get boxed into the same pop sound. He's got a long way to go but he's also got a great amount of talent that he would be able to change musical directions and still be fantastic.

I agree, he's already very talented and makes really good music now, but he was the potential to be really great and as you said, he's a legend in the making! biggrin He will be around for a long time because he's the real deal. Nothing fake or manufactured about him or his music.

He came along at a time when a lot of people were getting tired of autotune, microwave stars. I was shocked to see a young man, with a BAND behind him who could sing and dance. That's a damn shame when somethiing like that is shocking to see on a music awards show! rolleyes lol

I hope he doesn't make the same move that John Mayer did once he got sick of pop music. JM seemed desperate to play the blues so much that I think he kind of lost his way a bit. It's hard to say sometimes, maybe some artists attempt to have a bit of "fusion" in their sound but I think few can pull it off without seeming to be a bit cheesy. I think Bruno is slightly more likable than John Mayer so he should be okay in that regard.

Yeah I think Bruno is more likable than John Mayer, John has come off as kind of a douche because of some of his comments he's made publicly. Bruno takes his music seriously but yeah I hope he never takes it too seriously to where he loses focus of why he does what he does. Thats also what happened with Lady Gaga, but I dont really think that will happen to Bruno. He's very grounded and his head is on straight. He knows what he's about and what his music is about and he doesnt take himself overly serious which is good.

Please tell me that Bruno owns the masters and publishing rights to his music thus far! His catalog will be worth something in the future.

I agree with what you said about Lady Gaga. I was totally blown away by her when she hit the scene. Again, the shock of a female pop star who actually sings (even though she casually uses autotune) and she challenges you with her sound unlike some of her pop peers. I think LG needs to find her way back into electronic music and just stay there.

Bruno is very likable. I can't see John Mayer doing anything like this unless he just does it strictly for publicity. JM seems to rub people the wrong way and he doesn't know how to get a male audience. From what I can tell, Bruno is one of the first artists in a VERY long time to have a multi-generational, multi-ethnic audience.

This little girl will love Bruno the rest of her life.

LOL@damp squid, never heard that before smile Well, I dunno it seems that he might take chances at some point. He's on his third album so it might be a few more years away before he does it. I hope he's saving his money so he can eventually have more control and own his own stuff after a while. That's why I was wondering if he owned his publishing rights, etc. because the faster he makes money, he might be more likely to go bananas, so to speak.

Thats a good questiong Seventeen, I dont know if Bruno owns the masters and pub. rights to his music or not. I would think he does, but if he doesnt I would think he would work on getting ownership to them. I think he's too smart NOT to own them, so if he doesnt already I think he definitely will sometime in the future. He's probably learned by example from the lives of Elvis, MJ and others the importance of owning your art!

Like you I was blown away with Lady Gaga too when she first came out and felt like she had a long and promising career ahead of her, but its unfortunate that she has lost her way since then confused She does have what it takes to have a long successful career, she is talented, creative and she can really sing. But her focus is off now and she needs to stop taking herself so super seriously and drop the I'm so weird/quirky/out there gimmick with the crazy outfits and just focus on her music and her craft. Stop trying to be this larger than life persona and just focus on developing your art. Once she does that she will be in a position to make a comeback.

And yes Bruno is one of the rare artists to have a multi-generational, mult-ethnic fanbase and who appeals to both men and women nod Just like MJ did!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BRUNO MARS AND THE HOOLIGANS!! woot! This nomination is well deserved! dancing jig party

Emmys think Bruno Mars' halftime show was Super: two nominations

David Steele @david_c_steele Email RSS
July 10, 2014 11:07am EDT

The latest example of how the Super Bowl is an unstoppable force of nature in American television: The halftime show has been nominated for a primetime Emmy. Again.

Deep within the hundreds of nominations in dozens of categories announced Thursday morning in Hollywood for next month's Emmy Awards show, was February's Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, aired by Fox from New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

The performance received two nominations, for best short-format live-action entertainment program and best lighting design and lighting direction for a variety special.

Obvious questions: Those really are categories, and the Super Bowl halftime show is eligible for them? Yes, and yes—the previous year's halftime show, in New Orleans on CBS, was nominated in three technical categories, including the same two for which the Bruno Mars show was tabbed. The star that night, you might remember, was Beyonce.

She didn't win for best short-form program, but did win for lighting. Yes, an Emmy for lighting was handed out for a game in which the stadium lights went out about a half-hour after the halftime show had ended.

Bruno Mars was unable to blow out the lights in the Meadowlands this year, so time will tell whether that hurts or helps his Emmy chances.

Hey Naughty Kitty---remember on the other thread you and I were talking about how exciting it will be when Bruno gets a bit more freedom from the record companies and gets really crazy with it? Well, I came across a video that is probably a sneak peek into what else he's got going for him. If you haven't seen this video already, I'm sure you'll love it and watch it 10,000 or so times wink

Please keep in mind this was filmed from someone's phone so there is a bit of fan "screaming" in the background but it's not as bad as other videos I've seen smile

As for the Emmy Award nominations, I dont know when they started nominated super bowl halftime shows...I heard Beyonce's was also nominated but she didnt win (thankfully! lol)

Lemme guess, Beyonce's people paid off the Emmy board to start nominating people for Emmy awards for Superbowl performances. She's a hack. Pays for her fame, all style no substance.

Glad you enjoyed the video smile I wish I were going to MSG tonight to see Bruno but hopefully someone here on the Org is and will post about it. Glad that he's getting to do arena tours now. Now, if we can just get Prince and Bruno to collaborate on something biggrin...

Trolls be gone!
