Christmas In Soulsville - Various Artists on LP
Release: October 21, 2014
.
You might not think of holiday music when you think of Stax Records, but the label released numerous singles of holiday and seasonal music by its biggest stars throughout its storied history, many of which are compiled on Christmas In Soulsville. Christmas sounds classic and different here in Soulsville.
.
Soft, floating falsetto lead vocals and companion harmonies help The Temprees make "The Christmas Song" sound merry and bright, and Booker T. & The MGs glide through a smooth groovin' "Winter Wonderland." Isaac Hayes polishes his piano and vocal in "The Mistletoe & Me" to a glossy pop finish, sweet and potent from strings and horns stirred like invigorating rum through his cup of holiday cheer.
.
Even among the twinkling holiday reds and greens, Soulsville is still home to plenty of blues. Hayes' "Winter Snow" mourns the passing of a romantic relationship with a woman whose heart is as cold as its title. Albert King's guitar buzzsaws into big city electric blues, while Mack Rice kicks up a southern country blues ruckus, in their respective takes on "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'."
.
Other stops on this tour of Christmas In Soulsville come with intriguing backstories. For example, legend maintains that Rufus Thomas co-wrote his funky solo throwdown "I'll Be Your Santa, Baby" - which sure sounds interested in unwrapping more than presents and stuffing more than stockings - with an exotic dancer. Soulsville sounds like one funky, swingin' place to celebrate Christmas!
.
Christmas In Soulsville Track Listing:
1. Merry Christmas, Baby [take 1] - Otis Redding
2. Who Took The Merry Out Of Christmas - The Staple Singers
3. Winter Wonderland [take 2] - Booker T & The MG's
4. The Mistletoe And Me (Album Version) - Isaac Hayes
5. Black Christmas - The Emotions
6. Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin' (Album Version) - Albert King
7. White Christmas - Rance Allen Group
8. I'll Be Your Santa Baby - Rufus Thomas
9. Please Come Home For Christmas - Little Johnny Taylor
10. What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas - The Emotions
11. Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin' (Album Version) - Mack Rice
12. Winter Snow (Album Version) - Isaac Hayes
13. It's Christmas Time Again (The Christmas Song) - The Temprees
14. Christmas Comes But Once A Year - Albert King
15. That Makes Christmas Day - Rufus Thomas
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Very excited anout Donna's Geffen material & Diana's RCA material getting expanded! As for Donna, I can't wait to finally hear what's been in the vault from Thw Wanderer sessions, one of my Desert Island Discs. This album had no b-side only tracks or extended versions issued, so I'm very curious to hear what's added as extra material. This album is a masterpiece, her underrated best. I'm just as excited to hear what's added to Donna Summer. It's a given that Sometimes Like Butterflies has to appear. A shame that it didn't make it on the album and perhaps a single in its own right. Also, I've always heard the there's an exteneded version of Protection that's in the vault. Would love to get that! Even more so, though, would be a speculated duet verion with Springsteen...but that's a stretch for many reason. And finally, I'm A rainbow in its originally realized configuration please!

As for Diana Ross' RCA material, rarities that just need to appear are Up Front (12" UK Mix), Fight For It (one of her best sides for the label), Experience (Extended), So Close (Single Mix), and a rumored unreleased extended version of A Fool For Your Love. I'll be happy with anything else that's dug up, too!

"Walk Hand In Hand" is an unreleased song from that album.I hope it gets included as a bonus track. It's a very good, funky song that finds Donna in a pure R&B setting.Would have fit perfectly on the album. It seems like they took the bassline from this song, changed it a little and re-used it on "Livin' In America".

lol, fans have been debating about this song for years. Some fans insist that it's an outtake from the I'm A Rainbow sessions (1981),while other fans insist that it's a leftover from the Quincy Jones sessions (1982).Here's my thoughts: the track is extremely funky, with a bassline that sounds like it's played by Louis Johnson (of the Brothers Johnson),who appears on other tracks on the Donna Summer album.Donna's vocal style is pure R&B...the kind of vocals that Quincy Jones would demand from someone he's working with. And if you listen to the bassline closely,it's very similiar to the bassline on "Livin In America".

I'm A Rainbow is primarily a pop/rock album, and a track like "Walk Hand In Hand" sounds out of place on that project.I doubt that it was recorded during those sessions.

The song was actually released on a German compilation LP, see here: http://www.discogs.com/Va...se/3752047

Although the song is bass-heavy, it does not sound like Louis Johnson's signature bass playing to me. And it was written by Broder Broderson, who sounds like someone more from the I Am A Rainbow camp than the usual Q writers (Rod Temperton et al). Just my two cents smile

It's a great track...funkier and more R&B-flavored than most of Donna's 80s music.It kinda sounds like an unfinished demo,though.

In addition to that song, the Donna Summer album might have some other interesting bonus tracks/outtakes.Quincy is known for going through dozens of tracks when producing an artist.Donna has said that the song "What's Love Got To Do With It" was offered to her around that time, but she didn't think it was right for her.Perhaps a demo version was recorded? hmmm

Interesting. Never knew that. I know the song was offerred to Phyllis Hyman and I believe Patti said it was offerred to her. There very well may be demos of all 3 versions in the vaults. I don't know if it would have been a good fit for Donna. I can see why she may have turned it down. But, I can definately hear Patti and Phyllis tearing thru it. biggrin

yep,it was offered to Phyllis and Patti (and I think Cliff Richards?) before Donna finally got a hold of it.The thing is,if Donna had recorded it,it probably would have been just another 'album track' for her.I doubt that her label would have even released it as a single.

This is the first recorded version, by UK group Bucks Fizz, recorded in 1982. It was never released though, until a few years ago when it appeared on an expanded edition of one of their albums.

Another album that produced by Miss Ross and this time features her name as co-writer on four of the ten tracks and ended up going Gold, thus continuing Diana’s streak of solid-selling albums.
There’s no doubt that Silk Electric is her most experimental album ever with artistically Diana pushing boundaries all over the place. This makes listening to Silk Electric straight-through can be a bizarre and jarring experience, but the far greater issue than the material is the overall sound quality of the album.
So while Silk Electric is a challenging and very pleasant listen, which offers a little glimpse into the creative mind of Miss Diana Ross, and shows some new sides of her…..

DIANA ROSS - ross (Expanded Edition) LABEL: Funky Town Grooves RELEASE: 14/10/14

Diana Ross’ Third Release on the RCA Label.
Five of the Eight Tracks produced by Gary Katz, Two by Ray Parker Jr and One by Diana Ross.
Liner Notes by Alex Henderson
Re-Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Sean Brennan, at Battery Studio’s, New York
Ross is the 1983 album by legendary singer Diana Ross. The album was released shortly before Ross gave a pair of free concerts in New York's Central Park.
The album reached #32 on the US charts, #14 on the US R&B charts and #44 in the UK. The album's highest international chart position was in Sweden, where it reached #7.
The album's first single, "Pieces of Ice", peaked at #31 on the US charts. Subsequent singles "Up Front" (US R&B #60, UK #79) and "Let's Go Up" (US #77) were also hits. "Up Front" was Re-Mixed by Jolley & Swain for the original European release.
The album was an excellent success at the time and it remains one of the best Diana Ross albums more than twenty years after. An inimitable atmosphere, an impalpable mystery surrounds the whole album.
With the great production work by Gary Katz, Ray Parker Jr and Ross herself, there has always been a wonder why the album wasn't more successful upon its initial release. Ross is refreshing in the current time that more people now know of her rich and great catalogue value. No doubt, this album is one of her finest solo & RCA recordings.

The album was certified Gold and peaked at #26 on Billboard Pop Albums Chart, making this her last album to reach the Top 40, which also made the top ten in The Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.
Swept Away certainly did what it needed to do, which was to give Diana Ross some new hits and keep her on the charts. Beyond that, it gave her a classic, “Missing You,” on which she offered one of the great performances of her career.

The album also includes a contribution from Michael Jackson who co-wrote and performed vocals on the title track.
Liner Notes by Alex Henderson
Re-Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Sean Brennan, at Battery Studio’s, New York
Eaten Alive is the 1985 album by Diana Ross which reached #11 in the UK and Australia. The album also reached the Top Ten in Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands.
Following the largely self-produced Swept Away album, Diana Ross' shrewd choice of collaborators continued to impress when she turned to the Gibb brothers for her fifth studio project for RCA Records.
The album was a dynamic affair with an explosive set of songs as well as the title track also boasting the excellent production and song writing skills of the genius himself, Michael Jackson.
In the UK, Chain Reaction caught on to the British public like a magnet! This was simply vintage Diana Ross and it was this retro style that her public loved even though she has commendably attempted time and time again to break out into other musical genres in the past few decades.
Overly, Eaten Alive is a solid album with sparkling vocals from Ross, compelling arrangements and great lyrics. An enjoyable and diverse album from legendary Diana Ross.

DIANA ROSS - red hot rhythm and blues (2 CD Deluxe Edition) LABEL: Funky Town Grooves RELEASE: 14/10/14

Diana Ross – Red Hot Rhythm and Blues will be a 2 CD Deluxe Edition for the First Time Ever.
Includes 15 Bonus Tracks
The album includes the Top 15 US R&B and UK Top 40 hit, "Dirty Looks"
And the ballad "It's Hard for Me to Say", produced by Luther Vandross.
The cover photography was by Herb Ritts.
LinerNotes by Alex Henderson
Re-Mastered from the Original Master Tapes by Sean Brennan, at Battery Studio’s, New York.
Red Hot Rhythm and Blues is the 1987 album by the legendary Diana Ross. The album made the charts in Germany, The Netherlands and Austria, as well as reaching the Top 20 in Sweden and Norway.
The album was Ross's final album for RCA Records and included cover versions of several R&B classics, including The Bobbettes' "Mr. Lee", Jackie Ross' "Selfish One," Etta James' "Tell Mama", and The Drifters' "There Goes My Baby".
Ross decided to retreat to safer territory, returning to her roots of Rhythm And Blues to mark a celebration in black music for the dynamic Red Hot Rhythm And Blues album.
Listeners to this album were stunned to hear Ross' sensational, sexually-charged and charismatic performance that sound quite fitting when listening to those mildly racy lyrics. Never the less Red Hot Rhythm And Blues is ESSENTIAL to any Diana Ross fan and stands as something of an over-looked classic.

CD 1:

1. Dirty Looks (US Album Version)
2. Stranger In Paradise
3. Summertime
4. Shine
5. Tell Me Again
6. Selfish One
7. Cross My Heart
8. There Goes My Baby
9. It’s Hard For Me To Say
10. Shockwaves

2. Dirty Looks (Instrumental)
3. Dirty Looks (Bonus Beats)
4. Dirty Looks (UK Album Mix)
5. Shockwaves (12” Remix)
6. Shockwaves (Instrumental)
7. Shockwaves (7” Remix)
8. Mr. Lee (Swing Mix)
9. Mr. Lee (Rare Groove Version)

Disappointed they were only able to come up with only one previously unreleased track from Diane. However, I will probably buy all of the titles except "Ross" and "Silk Electric". Not enough bonus tracks there to make me want to buy those two titles for a second time.

Disappointed they were only able to come up with only one previously unreleased track from Diane. However, I will probably buy all of the titles except "Ross" and "Silk Electric". Not enough bonus tracks there to make me want to buy those two titles for a second time.

Yeah, I think I'll only rebuy "Red Hot R&B". I have the Japanese versions of the others, and I spent too much $ on those to let them go. biggrin

McCartney: “Venus And Mars” and “Speed Of Sound” reissues announced

Wings Venus and Mars and At The Speed of Sound deluxe reissues

Paul McCartney will reissue the 1975 Wings album Venus And Mars and the 1976 follow-up Wings At The Speed Of Sound in September.

Both albums will be available across a number of formats including a deluxe book edition similar to those issued for Band On The Run and McCartney / McCartney II as well as 2LP gatefold vinyl and two-CD editions.

Bonus audio is particularly generous on Venus and Mars, but highlights across both sets include a version of Beware My Love featuring Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, the single version of Letting Go, and a demo version of Let ‘Em In. In total these sets share 12 previously unreleased tracks between them.

The books appear to be enhanced versions what came before with the early reissues. While the dimensions look to have been maintained, the design team have abandoned the square album art inset on a coloured linen-bound cover page. Instead the album cover dominates the front cover entirely. Extra elements are inspired from the Wings Over America set with hidden pouches containing posters, backstage passes and the like. Amongst the delights within the Venus and Mars book is a smaller folio ‘Nashville Diary 1975′ along with an unfolding facsimile of Paul’s original handwritten lyric ‘scroll’. The Wings At The Speed Of Sound book boasts more facsimile archive memorabilia, posters and ticket stubs.

Like previous issues the books will come with download cards for hi-res versions of all tracks including the bonus material.

Both Venus and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound are reissued on 22 September 2014.

iTunes UK (and some other vendors) are showing the 80s albums as being available for download starting September 1. The label releasing them is Crimson which is part of the Demon Records Group - the ones remastering all the 80s stuff. The speculation is that these September 1 listings are placeholders for the upcoming remasters and as such are subject to change. I guess we will see when Demon puts out a press release.

The CDs including exclusive bonus tracks will be released in December (Crimson/DMG).

an update on the Donna Summer remasters:

The latest word on the upcoming Demon Records releases of the 80s albums is that they are still working on them, they hope to release them all at one time, they hope to make most of them 2 CD releases with lots of extras, and Bruce is working with them.

I agree. He's proving the artist himself has a word when it comes to gaining appreciation for his back catalogue. Many people thought McCartney's solo albums were sweety shit, and he's making them realise that's not true. He's obtaining respect for his back catalogue, apart from money. Sadly, Prince is probably too lost in his own world and in his own prepotence to pay attention, though.

- Worldwide reissue of her earliest albums for first time since original release

- 6x platinum ‘Kylie’, 4x platinum ‘Enjoy Yourself’, ‘Rhythm Of Love’ and ‘Let’s Get To It’ released October

- Available in Special, Deluxe and Collector’s editions

PWL and Cherry Red Records are to reissue the first four albums by the undisputed princess of pop – Kylie Minogue.

Marking the first time these classic albums have been back in print since their initial release, and with each digitally remastered from the original studio tapes, ‘Kylie’ (1988), ‘Enjoy Yourself’ (‘89), ‘Rhythm of Love’ (‘90) and ‘Let’s Get To It’ (‘91) will be reissued on 27th October.

Certified six times platinum in the UK, and the biggest-selling debut ever at the time, 1988’s ‘Kylie’includes favourites "I Should Be So Lucky" (UK #1) and "The Loco-Motion" (UK#2, US #3). Four times platinum chart topper ‘Enjoy Yourself’ (1989)continues the run of hits with "Hand On Your Heart" (UK #1) and "Tears On My Pillow" (UK #1). Hitting the UK top ten on release, ‘Rhythm Of Love’(1990) features "Better The Devil You Know" (UK #2) and "Step Back In Time" (UK #4), whilst Kylie's final album for PWL, 1991’s‘Let’s Get To It’, includes "Give Me Just A Little More Time" (UK #2), and the self-penned duet with Keith Washington, "If You Were With Me Now" (UK #4).

The reissues include a slew of bonus tracks, B-sides and remixes such as "Especially For You", Kylie’s platinum-selling #1 duet with Jason Donovan, and the original 1987 version of "Locomotion" (Kylie's Australian debut single prior to signing with PWL). (Full details below).

Expanded versions of each album will be available in three editions: Special Edition (unique picture CD artwork and a 24-page booklet containing full lyrics, new sleeve notes and classic images), Deluxe Edition (specially presented 2CD and DVD set including rare tracks, remixes and promo videos)and Collector's Edition (limited pressing boxset featuring picture disc LP, 2CD and DVD set, and other memorabilia). (Full details below).

All four albums will be made available worldwide, with pre-orders starting from 3pm on Friday 15th August. This follows an online teaser campaign around the hashtag #stepbackintime that has been building momentum over the last week.

Pete Waterman noted: "Kylie celebrated 25 years in music a couple of years back, so I went along to see her Anti Tour and to say hello. It was a fantastic night, and hearing her do some of these songs then, tracks she probably hadn't sung since she was signed to PWL, was magical. It was obvious just how special they are - for Kylie herself, for all of us worked on them, and for the fans in particular, and more so with time. They've become genuine classics.

Back then, we were making music for the moment, but it's stood the test of time. That's something special. And that's why we're celebrating with these very special releases. I now know what history means"

Cherry Red MD Adam Velasco said of the campaign: "Kylie is a truly iconic artist with fans throughout the world, so we’re delighted to be working with PWL to bring them her early material as they’ve never heard it before. These very special editions showcase a wealth of hits from her career, together with numerous bonus tracks and mixes that were not originally available.”

‘Kylie’was originally released in July 1988 and went a record-breaking six times platinum in the UK - then the biggest-selling debut album ever. Produced by the legendary Stock Aitken Waterman team, the album features the classic hits "I Should Be So Lucky" (UK #1), "Got To Be Certain" (UK #2), "The Loco-Motion" (UK#2, US #3) and "Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi" (UK #2). The special reissue includes the original 1987 version of "Locomotion" (Kylie's Australian debut single prior to signing with PWL), "Made In Heaven", recorded as the double A-side for "Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi", plus six essential 12" mixes.

‘Enjoy Yourself’was originally released in October 1989 and found Kylie consolidating the phenomenal international success of her partnership with PWL and the Stock Aitken Waterman team. Going four times platinum, the album gave Kylie a second chart-topping LP and continued her uninterrupted run of hits with "Hand On Your Heart" (UK #1), "Wouldn't Change A Thing" (UK #2), "Never Too Late" (UK #4) and "Tears On My Pillow" (UK #1). The special reissue boasts nine bonus tracks, including the unforgettable UK #1 duet with Jason Donovan, "Especially For You", which originally only appeared on the US edition of the album, plus sought-after B-sides and essential 12" mixes of all the singles.

‘Rhythm Of Love’was originally released in November 1990 and has long been seen as marking Kylie's coming of age as an artist - both visually and musically. As well as songwriting herself for the first time with US collaborators such as Stephen Bray and Michael Jay, Kylie recorded seven classic tracks at PWL with Stock Aitken Waterman, including a legendary run of signature singles: "Better The Devil You Know" (UK #2), "Step Back In Time" (UK #4), "What Do I Have To Do?" (UK #6) and "Shocked" (UK #6). The special reissue featuresfive bonus tracks - the essential 12" mixes of all four singles plus the original March 1990 mix of the fan favourite "Things Can Only Get Better".

‘Let’s Get To It’was Kylie's final album for PWL, originally released in October 1991 to rave reviews. Produced by Stock & Waterman, it found Kylie exploring the diverse grooves of the early 90s, from New Jack Swing and R&B to house and techno. It features the hits "Word Is Out" (UK #16), "Give Me Just A Little More Time" (UK #2), the classic "Finer Feelings" (UK #11), and the self-penned duet with Keith Washington, "If You Were With Me Now" (UK #4). The special reissue includes eight bonus tracks: "Keep On Pumpin' It", Kylie's classic underground club collaboration with Visionmasters & Tony King, plus B-sides and essential 12" mixes.
