The Average White Band "All The Pieces: The Complete Studio Recordings 1971-2003" 19-CD box set (Edsel UK)

Product Description
Average White Band are widely and rightly regarded as one of the best ever soul and funk bands.

Although probably best known for their global hit, the US #1 single ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, this extensive anthology delves back into their musical history, from the early sessions in 1971, right up to the most recent studio album released this millennium.

‘All The Pieces…’ features the band’s entire catalogue of recorded material on a 19CD box set, which includes all of the original studio albums (and ‘spoilers’ ‘Put It Where You Want It’ and ‘Volume VIII’) in mini-vinyl replica wallets, alternate versions and selected mixes, in this 172-track collection.

The box set includes the collectable re-packaged debut album ‘Show Your Hand’ - ‘Put It Where You Want It’ - whilst ‘Person To Person’ is packaged as a 2 disc gatefold wallet – to reflect the original 2LP set, ‘Feel No Fret’ is packaged as a gatefold release.

The bonus CDs wallet artwork has been created by the legendary John Pasche, who designed the iconic AWB logo.

AWB’s repertoire has been a source of inspiration for many R&B acts, who have sampled their material and who cite AWB’s grooves as a major influence.

The 52-page booklet includes an 11,000+ word liner note by US musicologist, Justin M. Kantor and includes recent historical recollections undertaken with Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart.

AWB continue to tour around the World.

Audiophiles Get Their Wish: The Beatles In Mono LP Box Cut from the Original 1/4-Inch Master Tapes and Pressed at Optimal on Dead-Quiet LPs

NO DIGITAL USED IN MASTERING CHAIN: Working at Abbey Road, Engineers Magee and Berkowitz Used Same Techniques Employed in 1960s for All-Analog Project

Exclusive to The Beatles In Mono Box Set: 12x12 Hardbound Book Features New Essays, Rare Photos, Archival Documents, and Detailed History of Mastering Process

Release: September 9, 2014
.
They saved the best for last. Cut from the original 1/4-inch analog master tapes and pressed at Optimal in Germany on dead-quiet 180g LPs, The Beatles In Mono 14LP box set is made by and for audiophiles. More collectable than its stereo and digital processors, and featuring utterly transparent-to-the-source sound, it is completely different than its stereo analog counterpart by way of the all-analog cutting process and audiophile-focused manufacturing. Purists rejoice: NO DIGITAL is involved in any part of the chain. This box presents The Beatles as they were meant to be heard, in spectacular mono sound.
.
Mastered from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and Grammy-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz, The Beatles In Mono LP box set exemplifies sonic transparency and analog purity. While The Beatles In Mono CD box set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records for The Beatles In Mono LP box by employing the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.
.
Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of the Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe. An exclusive 12x12 hardbound book featuring new essays, rare studio photos, archival documents, and an engrossingly detailed history of the mastering process by author Kevin Howlett rounds out this world-beating analog reissue, certain to be one of the decade most celebrated releases of the decade.

James Brown Love Power Peace on 3LP

First Release of 3LP-Set as Envisioned by James Brown
Mastered from Brown’s 1971 Mixdown Reels, Unused Until Now!
Available: July 22, 2014
.
James Brown’s magnum opus! Love Power Peace is the sound of the Godfather and his youngblood J.B.’s (including Bootsy and Catfish Collins) electrifying a crazed Parisian audience on March 8, 1971. Sequenced and mixed by Brown himself for a planned triple album, the set was shelved when key band members departed before it could be issued. Here, for the first time, are the sides as intended, exactly as delivered by James Brown Productions to his label in 1971 - a 3LP-set with each disc mastered from the original mixdown reels, and each with a unique name, Love, Power and Peace!
.
Brown and band rip through recent singles like “Sex Machine,” “Super Bad,” “Give It Up or Turnit a Loose” and “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” with a metronomic precision laid down by bassist Bootsy Collins and drummer Jabo Starks. “Ain’t It Funky Now” - formerly a slow, simmering groove - is transformed into a fast, funky tour de force in which newbie Catfish Collins unleashes one of the most badass guitar solos ever, while a medley of three other Brown standards (“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”/“I Got You (I Feel Good)”/“I Got the Feelin’”) blazes by faster than the Godfather of Soul’s personal Learjet.
.
Interspersed with just the right amount of slow numbers like “Georgia on My Mind,” and including tracks from the show’s supporting acts that were not included on the 1992 CD (which was a remixed, incomplete show), this document of the funk revolution comes complete with rare photos and liner notes by tour director Alan Leeds. The way to jump on board for a trip through James’ world at the height of his career!
.
Features:
• First release of 3LP-set as envisioned by James Brown

Meet the Beatles! Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance, John, Paul, George, and Ringo began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talent to the big screen. Directed with raucous, anything-goes verve by Richard Lester and featuring a slew of iconic pop anthems, including the title track, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I Should Have Known Better,” and “If I Fell,” A Hard Day’s Night, which reconceived the movie musical and exerted an incalculable influence on the music video, is one of the most deliriously entertaining movies of all time.

B.B. King - Life Of Riley DVD

Release: July 9, 2014

.

This is a no holds barred, powerful feature that explores how a black cotton picker from Mississippi turned his life around, battled against all the odds and unrelenting racism to overcome even the toughest critics. Filmed on location all over America as well as in the United Kingdom, this picture brings to life the heat and gin-soaked plantations where it all began. With the full cooperation of the BB King Museum, owners of vaults and archives so precious and immense, that several trips had to be made to America to revisit the collection and partake of its many gems. Prejudice and segregation has stained the lives of countless black person and BB 'Riley' King made sure that through his music, he never allowed it to mar his spirit. This is the essence of the story that makes an astoundingly beautiful film; extremely informative and visually captivating.

Having compiled the singles of such hit-happy artists as Gary Lewis & the Playboys and the Grass Roots, Real Gone Music now turns its attention to another quintessential ‘60s singles band, Spanky and Our Gang, with a 21-track collection that includes every unique A and B-side the band released on Mercury during their spectacular 1966-69 stint with the label! Led by Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane, Spanky and Our Gang had a folk-pop sound oft-compared to the Mamas and the Papas, but their harmonies and arrangements were, if anything, a little more sophisticated and varied, incorporating pop and jazz influences (while admittedly lacking a songwriter of the stature of John Phillips). As a result, the music of Spanky & Our Gang has aged better than many of their more self-consciously psychedelic contemporaries; there is a timeless quantity to their sound that explains why songs like “Sunday Will Never Be the Same,” “Lazy Day,” and “Like to Get to Know You” have remained fixtures on oldies radio over the years. You’ll hear all those songs and every other unique single side (include two differently-titled and mixed versions of Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’”) in their original mono single mixes on this collection, which includes liner notes by co-producer Ed Osborne that feature fresh interviews with Spanky McFarlane, producers Jerry Ross and Bob Dorough and arranger Jimmy Wisner along with some great photos. The definitive Spanky and Our Gang single-CD retrospective!

1. And Your Bird Can Sing

2. Sealed With A Kiss

3. Sunday Will Never Be the Same

4. Distance

5. Making Every Minute Count

Looks like Universal is now cooperating with BBR. They are preparing to reissue some long OOP Motown titles, along with some first time on CD titles. This one is due in August and was a loooong time coming!

CLASSIC MOTOWN ON BIG BREAK RECORDS

Stephanie Mills was a native New Yorker having been born and brought up in the borough of Brooklyn. She first tasted success as a singer at the age of 9, winning the famed Apollo Theatre's amateur hour several weeks in a row, which opened the doors to Broadway as a cast member in "Maggie Flynn” and as opening act for The Isley Brothers. Mills big break came in 1975 when she landed the lead role of Dorothy in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical "The Wiz,” based on The Wizard Of Oz. Jermaine Jackson was suitably impressed and was instrumental in helping her get signed to Motown Records to record her second album after "Movin' In The Right Direction” on ABC records in 1974.

• FOR THE FIRST TIME saw Mills team up with legendary song writing, arranging and production duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David, ironically for the last time they would work on the same project together. Given the medium in which she came to prominence the classic standards of Bacharach and David were perfectly suited to Mills theatrical voice as she performs the collection with effortless ease, running the full gamut of emotions alongside the understated and beautifully orchestrated contemporary arrangements. Mills talents come to the fore on tracks such as ‘I Took My Strength From You,’ ‘No One Remembers My Name’ and the single ‘This Empty Place.’

• Alongside FOR THE FIRST TIME Mills 1982 album ‘Love Has Lifted Me,’ (recordings from later Motown sessions that were held back) appears as the bonus tracks on this release. BBR is very proud to present FOR THE FIRST TIME, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Pop and Quiet Storm fans.

N.B. This album is released August 4 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Track List:

1. I TOOK MY STRENGTH FROM YOU
2. LIVING ON PLASTIC
3. NO ONE REMEMBERS MY NAME
4. IF YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO CRY
5. LONELINESS REMEMBERS (WHAT HAPPINESS FORGETS)
6. THIS EMPTY PLACE
7. THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT YOU
8. I SEE YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME
9. ALL THE WAY TO PARADISE
10. PLEASE LET GO

BONUS TRACKS
11. LOVE HAS LIFTED ME
12. LOVE IS EVERYWHERE
13. I DON'T WANT TO BE REMINDED
14. YOU ARE THE MELODY OF MY LIFE
15. THIS EMPTY PLACE
16. I HOPE WE DON'T RUN OUT OF MUSIC
17. THE KINGDOM WITHIN EVERYONE
18. THIS SIMPLE MASTERPIECE

Actually, it's 5 as "Eaten Alive" is also included. Can't believe this is finally happening, I know BBR have tried to licence these alums but to no avail. I'm happy FTG are doing these, they did a great job on the Evelyn King albums, though their booklets are a bit meh, the sound quality and track selection is always great.

I'm glad to see that this project is really happening lol I'm especially excited about the Quincy Jones produced Donna Summer CD being reissued.I wonder if I'm A Rainbow will be different from the 1996 CD? Apparently, that 1996 version was not exactly the way the 1981 album would have been released. For example, one side of the album was planned to be a suite, where the songs would all run into each other (like Donna's late-70s albums). It would be cool if they brought Giorgio Moroder on board,to truly "finish" that album and polish it up a bit.

FTG just announced four reissues of Diana Ross RCA era Ross, Swept Away, Why Do Fools and. Silk Electric

Hope they include "Red Hot Rhythm & Blues", her swan song for RCA. I have the Japan pressing because it included 2 bonus tracks not on the U.S. version. Problem is, whoever mastered the CD turned the sound waaaaay down. Some of the tracks you can barely audible.

more on Donna Summer reissues...

  • The albums excluded from this deal are 'She Works Hard For The Money' due to it being a contractual deal with Universal and the later Sony album 'Crayons' and all associated singles.

  • So we have 'The Wanderer', 'I'm A Rainbow', Donna Summer', 'Cats Without Claws', 'All Systems Go', 'Another Place And Time' & 'Mistaken Identity'.

  • all be in case bound books along with vinyl

Have they verified that all tracks will be from master tapes? I'm still very concerned that they are going to do the same chop job they did with the Tabu Records catalog by using terrible vinyl rips as bonus tracks. I'll have to wait for feedback before I get excited about these particular reissues.

FINALLY!!! Available in August.

We are proud to announce the first CD reissue of the soundtrack to this 1985 hip hop classic. When the soundtrack was originally released, the CD was a brand new and revolutionary product. It only saw a release in Japan and has become a rather expensive collectible. We decided to remedy that with the first ever reissue of the soundtrack on CD. Also included: 2 bonus tracks from the Japanese CD.
