Giving Donna an award was out of sympathy... and down right insulting to her legacy

Janet for the Rock and Roll hall of fame, for sure.

But who cares anyway. Isn't it just a bunch of journalists at Rolling Stone who are deciding who "their' favourite artists are?

She's in my Hall of Fame.

The committee gets hundreds of these things every year for a lot of artists so I doubt they pay attention to them but good luck with that.

The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame is an event managed by so called politicians in the music industry and as the remaining members of the Sex Pistols put it straight.... it's just a piss stain.

Really its not, its just what the Stans use as the reason for her below average output there after.

It wasn't a big deal - but conservative American's blew it way out of proportion.

She probably the only artist to ever been blacklisted from all major radio outlets and the only person to be disinvited from the Grammys in the States. The rest of the world like sheep followed:

Example:

"Just a Little While" was released as the lead single from Damita Jo on February 2, 2004. Jackson rushed to film a music video for the song after a premature leak. "Just a Little While" received highly positive reviews from critics, who felt its elements of rock and dance music would ensure the song success. The song's airplay increased over five-hundred percent on its official release date, also achieving "sizeable" digital downloads. Its airplay suffered when Jackson's blacklist was placed into effect by major radio broadcasters who were fined after Jackson's Super Bowl incident, affecting its overall chart positions worldwide. The song was quickly pulled from radio. "Just a Little While" peaked at number forty-five and within the top twenty in airplay in the United States, making it her first solo and lowest peaking lead single since "Come Give Your Love to Me" over twenty years prior'

The Fan that wrote the letter is passionate and made great points but I have an issue with him/her running over other Artists just to make Janet look good. That part of the letter is Rude, Shady and a slap in te face to those vocalists. Only an Ignorant person would even DREAM of saying Jody Watley is not talented...

I think he's coming more from a place of how Control ushered in the era of the MTV dance diva of color, which is what it did. When Control blew up, suddenly there was an influx of black girls strutting their stuff in music videos. I'm sure record company execs scrambled to sign the next Janet Jackson, hence the sudden solo albums at the time from Vanessa Williams, Jody Watley, Nia Peeples, Paula Abdul, etc. Looking at some of those ladies' videos, you can literally see the Janet influence. Watch Janet's Nasty and Vanessa's The Right Stuff back to back and you'll see what I mean.

I believe her album sales are exaggerated but the high number is due to multiple gold, platinum and multiplatinum singles and all for you not being recertified to 3 million long ago. However mj had it worse and got inducted twice after, so I don't see why not. Donna summer should be a lesson to induct janet soon, and while they're at it, chic/Nile Rodgers

I see chancellors point. Jody was around longer than janet musically including for soul train and is still active and independent, and Paula is in a class of her own. Janet was influenced by them as much as they were too by her. Record labels were capitalizing on how control was marketed when dealing with those artists but Janet was the most profitable for her brand and her last name though she proved herself quickly and time and time again to be her own person

One should also see how Jody watleys videos influenced rhythm nation and Janet eras, and similarities in the spellbound and Janet tours though Janet tour kicks butt

Oh, Jody is definitely no copycat (if anything, Madonna stole heavily from her, image-wise), and there's no doubt that she would have had a solo career at some point, but the timeline of Control's success vs. Jody's debut solo album (as well as Karyn White's, Nia Peeples's, Vanessa Williams's, etc.) is proof that record companies were looking for that next Janet-esque artist. Not taking anything away from them, of course.

I already said it was a two way street and they were marketed like Janet in control. And might I remind you Jody was vogueing long before Madonna appropriated it

You don't need to remind me because that's what I said--Madonna jocked vogueing from Jody, as well as some of her style.

I don't think the RHOF is relevant or their opinion matters and like plenty have said there are more deserving artists that should technically be inducted before her although she deserves to get in to. The fact still remains Janet is underrated. Unfornately, I think Janet will get her rightful respect once God forbid something serious happens to her. I just think that the industry should tribute and acknowledge their music legends and icons while they are still alive to witness and appreciate them. It should not have to take the passing of an artist for the industry to finally respect them. I just think its sad because it is almost like the industry is trying to erase her legacy. She has had the same amount of influence on today's entertainers as Madonna has and is hardly ever mentioned. No female pop artist today has released an album as influential, socially conscious and daring as Rhythm Nation but no one never talks about that.

I did do "a quick internet search". The most comprehensive list was provided by Wikipedia and all the references to her "worldwide sales" at least were just links to PR nonsense with nothing to back it up. Can you provide links to something better yourself? The US sales numbers seemed quite believable, but the worldwide sales numbers seemed simply made up (14 million for, both, Control and Rhythm Nation worldwide? What a nice round figure those both albums have ended up selling! Wonder how that came about...).

Even with the sales figures in Wikipedia the total sales don't add up to more than 70 million copies of her albums. And like stated, that's highly questionable.

Janet's biggest sellers have never even been recertified stateside, so there's no telling what their true current sales tallies are. The janet. album alone has likely surpassed the 10 million mark in the US.

They sure can't have doubled their sales in the US and around the world. Even when MJ was alive his back catalog sold approx. 1 million a year and nobody should believe those numbers his P&R team and the Jackson family simply came up with later. At first they doubled those figures then a few years quadrupled them! (Why not quadruple them if just a few years ago we were able to double them, right?). Then the P&R team of Beyonce and the like followed and the real numbers didn't matter anymore as long as somebody just typed it out on an entertainment website and linked to Wikipedia.

What's wrong with fans of popstars these days anyway? 60-70 million albums is a huge amount of albums sold, you don't need to come up with some made up figures to make your idols look better.

I didn't want to say that, but you took the words right out of my mouth. Michael gets way more credit than her, even for ideas he borrowed from her and she needs her credit. Normally I see him and Britney be listed as big 90's artists when it should be both of them, but I guess it's too much if it's from the same family...

The letter this thread is about refers to album sales. Not that singles, especially during the CD single days, really sold millions and millions of copies either.

One possibility is that some dumbass has just counted in those US sales in her overall worldwide sales figures twice. The Wiki page mentions "US" and "World" sales separately, but the "world" sales seem to include the US sales in them as well (that's explicated nowhere on the page itself, but there's no way in hell the Control album sold 3 times as many copies outside the US as it did domestically). That way you might end up closer to a figure like 100-120 million and maybe that's gotten cited across the web. Of course, pop music fans are also under the false impression that the back catalogs by their favourite artists keep selling millions and millions of copies each year (the likes of The Beatles and Pink Floyd, maybe, but Janet Jackson, most likely not).

I think I've commented enough on this matter though. Unless someone can provide at least somewhat convincing links on what Janet Jackson's album sales are I don't think I am interested in "fighting" over this stuff anymore. My point is that even if her album sales are somewhere around 60 million that's impressive enough on its own right. There should be no need for the fanbase to come up with made up figures in order to make her seem bigger than what she is.
