an

Court and Spark or Blue. I like the live album Miles of Aisles as well, it works as kind of a compilation of her early album material. Maybe after those get Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. I have to admit I've not listened to her much for awhile. Might give her a spin later, thanks!

For The Roses easily my favorite Joni Album just for "Let The Wind Carry Me"alone.
The arrangements are off the charts on this one IMO . Judge for yourself & post ure thoughts .

I love Joni, now is a really good time to start getting into her too. With spring time coming near, i always love to listen to Joni in the spring time.

I would say:

Hejira

Court and Spark

Blue

The Hissing of the Summer Lawns

My trajectory started with Blue, then the familiarity of Court and Spark, then Turbulent Indigo (surprisingly accessible), and then I got ultra-hooked by Hejira. All of this happened over a decade. For me, her stuff is pretty tough to connect with at first, but, wow, when you do... If you're into the smooth 70s pop/jazz sound, Hissing of Summer Lawns might be a good starting point, too. And don't discount the newer albums. "Shine" has some achingly beautiful moments.

Exploring Joni's pre-'80s catalog first -- and any order would work -- will famiiarize you with the era that endeared her to the world. For my money, pretty much anything from this period is essential. (Her '80s output was hit-or-miss to me. And she found her mojo again in the '90s onwards.)

That said, Joni's overall trajectory from folk ingenue to the arguably preimminent lyrical commentator of post-'60s Western society is as impressive as any one song or album. You might best appreciate who she gradually became, then, by starting right at the beginning, Songs to a Seagull, and working your way chronologically to Shine.

The collection "The Beginning of Survival" captures very well the highlights of the 80s/early 90s sound. She starts using really intricate and big vocal arrangements in that period that are just awesome.

Everyone saying start with Hejira is just wrong. Even Hissing Of Summer Lawns is the more accessible one of that era.

Start with Court And Spark.

nod Joni is a HUGE Marvin Gaye fan, and she takes this classic on beautifully.

I'd love to hear her venture into classic soul or return to jazz for a bit.

Start with Miles of Aisles... It's a perfect encapsulation of earlier work... then work your way from there. I recommend The Hissing Of Summer Lawns next...

Yes, but I would rate Court and Spark higher, if only for the change in her voice

I must be rather odd as I never got into Court And Spark!

I discovered Joni via hearing 'Ladies Of The Canyon' and being totally transfixed by it. Such a good album, as is 'Clouds'.

I do have quite a soft spot for 'Dog Eat Dog' even though it's an eighties album..it's very memorable for me. I'm not made keen on 'Chalkmark In A Rainstorm' which came afterwards - I think I bought it at the time purely due to Wendy And Lisa's involvement!

I feel her later work is seriously underrated. She just got better as a lyricist.

That is true too, but he should still start with her early-mid 70s schitt.
