Updated: Kelis Serves Up New Album, Food

December 11, 2013

Kelis is starting out the new year with a new label and a new album. The singer will serve up her sixth LP Food next spring.

The follow-up to 2010′s Flesh Tone will arrive on April 28 via U.K. indie label Ninja Tune. It was produced entirely by Dave Sitek, the founder of rock band TV on the Radio and producer for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

According to a press release, Food is “a soul record that’s as raw and alternative as it is classic.” The 34-year-old explores pain, happiness, and everything in between, while showcasing her “most frank and vulnerable vocals to date.”

“I’m really happy to be partnering with Ninja Tune on my new record,” said Kelis. “This is the album I’ve wanted to make for a long time and I want the team around me to be as excited and energetic about it as I am. I’m also very happy to be working with some of the most creative people in the industry.”

Earlier this year, she offered a taste of her new music with “Jerk Ribs” and recently shot a video for the song “Rumble.”

“I’m really excited, my album is done,” Kelis previously tweeted. “It sounds like love and summer balled up into one!”

Interesting that she is on Ninja Tune. I hope she gets some exceptional remixes for this project as they house some of the top names for a few different genres.

This whole project sounds very creative and fun, I am sure it will be miles from the last album which was a bit too "gay bar" for my tastes.

Good luck Kelis!!

A reputable indie label like Ninja Tune will provide her the satisfying stability she needs without smothering her creativity. I'm looking forward to buying her offering when it comes out next April.

If the album is anywhere near the creativity of the "Tasty" album (which it sounds like it is) then you can count me in. biggrin

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Love Kelis, tremendously unrrated. For me, Kaleidoscope and Tasty are top notch rnb albums. Tasty should've have figured among the best albums of the last decade, only critics would pay her more attention.

I AGREE BUT it is hard to be objective about Tasty, when it is the serving platter for "Milkshake" and even has THIS PICTURE on the back cover.

Perhaps sexual imagery bothers you. Not my case.

I don't know what your music taste in general is, but I think you'll came out pretty impressed after listening to it. The ballads are just as good as the uptempo numbers.

No, I like the album, but critics get hung up on how they feel about "Milkshake" when addressing Tasty.

i think this will be a big album for her just judging on the first single's sound and the description of it.

Food, mints a sound that’s rootsy without ever being self-consciously retro, that pitches live horns and gospel organ against electronics, that for all its classic soul and funk influences, couldn’t have been made any time but now.

i love that she always does something different each album. loving this visuals so far as well.
