Although Madonna probably should have not used the word, she didn't mean any harm. She's obviously not a racist. I too am one who believes blacks can be hypocritical when it comes to the use of the "N" word. If blacks are so offended by the word why use it? Before anyone assume I am racist, just know I am black.

How in the fuck do you know what she means?? You're a mind reader?? you know what's in her heart??

How could she be using it in a racist manner when she used in relation to her white son? She and her son are both white so where is the racist element in her use of the word? She was obviously saying in the affectionate slang meaning of bro, mate, dude etc, not the derogatory racist way. Anyone who has followed Madonna's career and interviews over the years knows she is not a racist. Just the opposite. Now I could see the problem if she used it in relation to one of her African American children or an actual black person. Now I get people think it should never be used, but it's used in rap in a slang affectionate way all the time. If anything her use of it was the opposite of racist white superiority, it was a salute to popular black culture. Now I totally understand that a lot of black people don't approve of rap and hip hop, but the word is part of contemporary rap and hip hop when spelled with an a.

Madonna knows damn well that's a derogatory term that should not be used by anybody especially her since she's the mother of two black boys. And why do white people think that because black people use it, it's ok for them?? NEWFLASH: IT's NOT. I can call my wife a bitch , slut , or whore all day long, but If someone spoke to her in that way I would put a foot up their ass You Madonna apologist act like you know this woman personally, like someone said, if a black artist had said that about a gay person, you people you be losing your mind

well the affectionate slang meaning of it wasn't meant for white or non-black people to use either. that would defeat the point of reclaiming a racial slur. so madonna would be wrong either way. now i don't really agree with reclaiming it or using it as a term of endearment because it doesn't lessen the sting of it for me.

that's the thing that makes me most upset. that fact that she has to black children and is using such language. i never heard the word come out of my own black mother's mouth but i'm supposed to be cool with madonna saying it because she didn't say the version with the ER on the end or in a "malicious" way. please.

No matter how many of you try to excuse it or justify it she is wrong. Even if she is not a racist she is still wrong.

If this is the best she can do to "salute" black culture she can go to hell and so can anybody else who believes that drivel.

The garbage that passes for rap and hip hop today is NOT black culture...it is a small subset of youth culture and much of it is corporate created, corporate driven and a far cry from what rap originally was.

I'll be damned if I'm gonna let people push this degenerate art form as some type of "black" culture and I'm happy that so many young people have peeped the game are finally turning their backs on it.

I would love to record a daily ride on the MTA here in the lovely Bronx, NY. Latin folks and black folks bascially have that "n" word on rotation, more than the females say "like".

You're living in a bubble if you think this word is not part of the daily vernacular of the youth of any skin color.

As U know, there is no 1 Black culture, and rap/hip hop culture is a culture, maybe a subculture, but a culture none the less that has gotten too much attention as defining 'Black culture'

.

And Madonna has done a lot more and a lot better in spotlighting aspects of black culture. more recently that/those men of African ancestry in France who created that acrobatic art form of jumping (that's the best I can do to describe it)

.

What she did was not racist, but wrong because it was made public (mostly). But the wide spread use of Ni&&a by African-Americans of various backgrounds (and cultures) are the root of this continued problem. Sadly

.

Even I hear the use of 'Black people I love, Ni&&as I hate' by Chris Rock and others that repeat that line. I say why can't Ni&&as be replaced with 'Idiots, Fools, etc' In that context he and others are still relating back behaviour with race.

.

I feel you post definately

There's this movement to abolish the word, from both black and white folks. But the theory is that white people do not want to abolish that word. They just want black folks to get in as much trouble as they do for saying it.

Who can use the n word..

I guess, Only Black-American people more specifically those more 'culturally' black, I think a 'black' kid not raised or behaving 'black' would be looked at suspiciously

.

At one time Puerto Ricans were/are allowed to use it, because many of them may have 'African' ancestry or their NYC Hip Hop cultural connections. J-Lo when dating Puff Daddy used it in a song, and that was the first time I thought of a Puerto Rican using it and getting flack for it.

.

I have heard it used more among young people (white) and even more specifically Italian-Americans (guido/guidette) culture, all using it toward each other. Hip hop has a wide reach.

I was in a Starbucks one day,and these two young Asian girls were in back of me.They looked like they were about 17 or 18 years old.One of them mentioned some dude, and the other girl started saying "Oh yeah...that's my nigga! He's hella cool!!" lol It goes back to what I said earlier. The word "nigga" means nothing. It's not even offensive anymore.Young kids of all races use that word so freely now,it's not even worth getting upset about. That word is powerless.

I think you guys are conflating nigga and n*gger... They're not the same thing. When I hear my nieces and nephews and cousins use the word nigga it doesn't even have a racial context because they (who are Dominican like me) use it to describe Puerto Ricans, Salvadoreans, Black people, jewish and italian people... everyone. The younger generation would look at this thread and ask what all the fuss is all about.. they know the difference between calling someone a n*gger and saying nigga. Context DOES matter, as anyone who knows anything about linguistics will testify. No one is denying that n*gger is still offensive. What we're discussing is the word "nigga".

Change it one more time..

Like someone else said, your mixing Nigger and Nigga, I don't like either the 2nd one for the blurry lines

But Black people call each other Nigga all the times, sometimes as a 'term of endearment' other times in a nasty way.

So I still don't get it, because many a black person has been assaulted with Nigga by another black person before or during a violent act or crime. Or used in a verbal assault.

So which one is it people?

First of all I'm not defending Madonna..I 2 think she should stay away a bit from internet...although it's up 2 her 2 decide. But I see a lot of people talking about verbal assault, offensive, etc about the word nigga...I see most of U got dozens of other options of words 2 offend people when trying 2 make your point..it's more hate than any word could carry. Not only in this thread, but in a lot...so I'm calling most of U (not all) hypocrats.

That's even worse, that is a degrading way to view another human being especially one that you are supposed to have some kind of 'solidarity' with.

.

If that's true, then the word is some kind of neutral that can be used negatively or positively. I guess

.

Who beats another man down calling him "brothu, brother, friend, buddy!!!"
