This might not make a different to some of you either way, but Madonna did use the one with 5 letters (n***a), NOT the one with 6 letters (n***er).

CynicKill said: there is no blaming the black community for this. Anyone with half a brain cell knows the connotations behind that word, black and white people alike.

i agree. i don't like how the blame is shifted on black people whether it's a prevalant word in hip-hop or not. it's not like every black person says it (i don't.) and it's still a racial slur. never have i seen people complain about not being able to say a racial slur than i have over the n-word. other racial slurs are unacceptable but somehow there's a million excuses as to why everybody should be able to say the n-word. anyway madonna disappointed me as a black fan of hers, and her apology sucked.

Thank you. Why are people dying to be able to say this particular word and somehow feel deprived when they can't...wtf?

If a guy refers to his wife as a b*tch every day for a year I still would not think it was okay for me to say it.

Anyway, this is the same woman who posted a pic of her 13yr old posing with a bottle of gin on NYE...real nice message there too.

Not surprising , but I'm nonetheless very disappointed in her . Just one more mortifying example of why most celebs should take a cautious approach to social media. She deserves the backlash she's getting.

I don't think she was trying to be racist, but rather "cool" by trying to act like the kids do on social networks with some bratty/immature worded post. I like Madonna but that was mindnumbingly dumb of her. She needs to get off Twitter and Instagram, she acts like she's her kids age when she's on them. I'm too old for Twitter and Instagram, then she's WAY too old for it.

stop,, once agaon she is not the i hate black people racist, she is the i lnow better then black people racist..if i was to call one of her dancers a fag what say u

She's not a racist lol and your horrible grammar won't help your argument. If Madonna called one of her dancers a fag nothing would happen because they already know they're a fag. Fag, like the N-word (which Madonna never should have said) is a reclaimed slur.

What's worse is how the gay community treats these things. They want to talk about racial situations and how it affects the world. Yet when one of their ''divas'' does some racists sit suddenly there's excuses.

That's why Katy Perry can wear racists shit towards Asians... and no one blinks. That's why Rihanna and crew can do stupid shit like Princess Of China video and it doesn't have to be PC. And since Madonna is well... a huge icon in the gay world. Whatever she says is seen as ''brave'' or ''fearless'' but if any other artists... especially if it was say someone like Joni Mitchell or Bruce Springsteen it would probably be seen as horrible racists. Double standards in the gay community...

I take issue with your point. Whilst a fair one, I think the way you have written it up here is a huge sweeping generalisation. I'm gay, and I find this shit offensive - and I would be mortified if one of my "idols" said anything like that.

That said, I think the point you're trying to put across is that without the groundswell of vocal disaproval, no waves are ever made and they "get away with it".

If that's the case, I hear ya - but I thought it an important clarification to make, and wondered if you'd further clarify your own point in context of this?

Oh, ya think? As a gay man, if someone called me a fag, they'd get a smack in the fucking face. ANY derogatory slur is unacceptable behaviour, there is no grey area here - I don't give a flying crap who you think you are, celebrity or not.

The problem persists because people like yourself continue to think it's acceptable as friendly banter and allow others to get away with it. Call people out on their shit. Because by not doing so, you're as big a part of the problem as they are.

Bro, of course not every gay person is this way. But... it's a problem in the community regardless. Dozens upon dozenswill defend a ''diva'' no matter what crazy shit she does racists or otherwise. We knoe it happens, and i'm not going to sugar coat it.

As mentioned all those things mentioned Perry & Rihanna... no one int he gay community wanted to say shit about it.

Look I don't like being called a fag as a gay man either. The fact is what I was trying to point out is that gay men are often the ones letting things slide. If Madonna called someone a fag she'd be defended to the end simply because of her credibility in the gay community. I don't think slurs are acceptable, reclaimed or not, but many do.

To me,the word "nigga" has absolutely no power. It's become a useless term that almost everyone uses these days.I even hear young white and Asian kids using that term all the time,to refer to their friends. The word is a joke and it carries no weight anymore. If someone referred to me as a "nigga",I wouldn't even be fazed lol

Words only have as much power as we give them. The word "nigga" means nothing.

Firstly, there are two diff'rent words in question here. "Nigger" and "nigga." Madonna was using the latter in addressing her "kid" like most "kids" today so very freely use the term. She was being the "cool," "connected," "down" mom. Though it sounds similar to the formerly used word except with the "a" instead of the "er" at the end of it. Besides, most kids today don't even know what "nigger" even is. It's from aeons ago.

If the Hip Hop Movement was more socially responsible 2 begin with, the use of the word "nigga" would not have even been a part of its vocabulary nor permissible for the past 20+ years. We reap what we sew.

We, as members of American culture, despite what b.s. Hip Hop and Hollywood dicatate is/isn't "cool," continue to allow its inclusion in modern day vernacular. Myself, I don't use either word. I find them both 2b unintelligent word choices for personal address. There are more potent, acceptable words than "nigga" such as brotha, sista, etc...in which 2 address one another that could and still can so easily replace the "n" word. I don't think that MLK would be all too tickled pink about people runnin''round referrin' 2 each other as "nigga." I just don't.

Madonna was being as culturally "cute" as the rest of 'em and perpetuating exactly what all the others perpetuate as acceptable social behavior out of jest. Let's cut the hypocrisy and start being more verbally consciencious and choose from a pallate of more "humane" words when it comes to addressing one another. It's not rocket science. Food 4 thought on the eve of one of America's most influential man's birthday in history with love. smile

i think kids definitely know what the n-word means, they just don't care. like many people don't care about respecting black people. that's great if people aren't fazed by the word but the word makes me cringe as it is and then to hear it from non-black people out in public is even worse. i don't care if they said it at home till they're blue in the face but i don't wanna be subjected to it in public lol, it just shows lack of respect to me as a black person.

Sure didn't Prince, under the NPG banner release an album called Gold Nigga (There I said it) and sure diesn't Kanye West and Jay-Z use the Nigga word at least once a verse.......If Nigga and Nigger are offensive to the black community then please let them stop glorifing the word.

Yes I'm and Irish whitey with red hair.... Gingga (Ginger head)....and maybe I don't understand Americans need to jump down folks throats using a language they use all the time ...

Again, it was a horridly stupid thing for her to do...and she deserves the fallout for being stupid...but I do agree that you have to look at intent and context, and in this context, it's obvious that Madonna wasn't trying to make a racist comment, or to blatantly offend anyone. Instead, she was trying to be playful and 'hip' (and simultaneously controversial) by hash-tagging like she believes the youth her sons age on Instagram tend to talk. She was basically trying to be Weezie Jefferson. She should have known better.

And I will ask you the same question I've asked others. If I hear you refer to your wife daily as a stupid b*tch is it okay for me to do the same?

Remember when we were kids and we wanted to do something the other kids were doing? Remember what our parents used to say, "if little Jimmy jumped off a bridge would you do it too?"

It isn't about whether or not madonna is a racist, it's about the loss of manners, home training, civility and common sense which is lacking in today's public discourse.

I realize that there are times and context for certain word usage but in the advent of social media people are under the mistaken impression that any and every stupid idea that comes into their mind should be shared...it shouldn't.

I don't believe that madonna is a racist but I know for a fact that she is old enough to know not to conduct herself like a foolish child.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
