Fuck yes!!! nod even though I love a wide range of their work, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" has and will always be my #1 favorite song by them. I've loved it since first hearing it at 3 yrs old when it came out in '85!!!!

nod When we did those lists a few years back, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" ranked as my 3rd favorite song of the decade. Love love love that song!

Still friends, still touring, released an excellent TFF album in 2004, new one due this year.

My bad. I thought I read something about them having a falling out. Good to know that's not the case.

They did. A while ago... (1991-2000)
They reunited and released "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" in 2004.

I just picked up the "Gold" best of album, only listened to disk 1 so far, but they sound pretty good. Liked Ëverybody Wants to Rule The World and Sowiing The Seeds of Love the best. Remind me a lot of that other 80's the band, Talk Talk.

We're here, might as well get into it.

TFF are definitely one of my 3 favorite '80s pop bands. I finally got to see the other 2 live a few years back (Crowded House multiple times in '07 and '10, Duran Duran in '11). TFF was close one time, but I couldn't go. neutral

I will take this opportunity to brag once again. The video for TFF's classic "Head Over Heels" was filmed at my seminary's library...

One of my favorite spaces in the entire world.

Roland & Curt's joint recordings — The Hurting, Songs from the Big Chair, The Seeds of Love, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending — make up a consistently great discography. (Not that Roland's solo work under the TFF name is bad by any stretch.) I'm very excited for the new album!

I was wondering when someone would mention the new album. I was on a music site the other day, & I came upon it. I think its called 'Electronic", because I listened to 3 or 4 cuts, & I remember thinking they came up with the right title, but the songs are pretty good, if you are into that sound. I liked their songs from back in the day, esp 'Head over heels" & Everybody.......... the world'. O my, I forgot "Shout'!

SquirrelMeat mentioned it early on the thread. What I didn't know is the title, Electronic. If that's the definitive title, it's very similar to the one of the Pet Shop Boys' new record, Electric. Anyway, this is going to be an awesome year for those of us who love 80's pop bands: new albums by Prefab Sprout, Pet Shop Boys, O.M.D. and now Tears For Fears.

I love that song... but I could never get into the cover.
They used the Jules version on an episode of either Criminal Minds or CSI, as the murder was being committed. It was haunting enough for that, but I can't just listen to it.

I love the original and the cover. "Haunting" is definitely the right word to describe the Gary Jules version. It's about as radical a transformation for a cover as it gets and creepy to the max. Can't get enough of it!

I really should watch Donnie Darko again soon.

There've been a ton of nods to this one over the years.

Perhaps most notably, Adam Lambert charted with a cover of the Gary Jules arrangement in 2009. Very polished vocal performance, but almost too polished to have the effect that Jules mustered. (And, yep, "haunting" is a perfect description.) Susan Boyle and Canadian jazz vocalist Shannon Butcher also covered the tune in the past couple years. Boyle does another straightforward take on the Jules arrangement; Butcher turns the tune into a Samba! Both are... eh, OK, but they do away with that gorgeous descending scale during the chorus. The song just ain't the song without it, IMHO.

At the end of the day, I don't think you can much improve on the TFF or Gary Jules' versions.

Elemental is one of my favorite albums of all time. It had a little to do with the mood I was in when it came out. Some of it is dark but at the end it sounds hopeful. Hard to explain. Not sure what state of mind Roland was in when he made it but it is a classic in my opinion. His voice is one of my favorites too.
