I don't really know much about Robin's music other than that song that had the disco 5th Of Beethoven by Walter Murphy in it (don't remember the name), but I saw this on TV yesterday. It was the first time I've heard the song at all.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think Mayer Hawthorne's album is the type of album Robin Thicke SHOULD make. He's got it in him somewhere.

I think Thicke should be teaching a class on releasing consistently good albums, because he might be doing it better than anyone else in the last 10-12 years.

MOVES LIKE FELDSTEIN 2:
DOING "LINES"
Manager and CAM Head Hails
Robin Thicke's Breakthrough

August 9, 2013

When we profiled Career Artist Management headJordan Feldstein on this site in January, we focused largely on the colossal success of Maroon 5. Toward the end of the piece, however, Feldstein voiced his excitement about the next project by another client: Robin Thicke. “I think as an artist, a brand and a star, he has the capability of reaching a much wider audience,” the manager promised.

That was a bit of an understatement, it turns out.

Of course, Thicke’s grooving single “Blurred Lines” (featuring Pharrell and T.I.) turned into a juggernaut, moving 4.5 million downloads; it remains #1 at iTunesand at Pop, Rhythmic, Hot AC, Urban and Urban AC radio (with 257k+ cumulative spins and more than 36k this week).

Along with a notoriously steamy video (more than 128mVEVO views for the official version and 8.6m on theunrated clip), the track drove a killer 174k, #1 bow for the album of the same name. So we could probably say the manager’s faith in his client’s new music was justified, eh?

“Robin has been one of the most satisfying projects I have ever worked on,” Feldstein says. "When he was Adam Levine's mentor on The Voice, I kept thinking what a star he was. When I heard 'Blurred Lines' I knew it was special immediately, but not an obvious song for radio. I knew we would have to be creative. I have to give credit to Diane Martel and Robin for being so daring with the video, and to everyone at Interscope for following our vision.”

Thicke’s album also includes songs by Dr. Luke, will.i.am and Timbaland. “The beauty of this record is that the will.i.am. track sounds like it could be played in Ibiza, and there are other tracks that are more Urban records,” Feldstein explained at the time. Now that Thicke is on top at five formats, we’re thinking the sky’s the limit.

I really like Mayer's album, but it's not nearly as accessible as Robin's album.Mayer needs that one big major hit song and so far,he hasn't gotten it yet.His label still has alot of work to do.

"Ooo La La" is my favorite track.I've noticed that many other fans have said that this is their favorite song, too.

"Feel Good" and "The Good Life" are two songs that I've been listening to alot, these past few days.

"Go Stupid 4 U" is a really interesting track lol

"Take It Easy On Me" and "Give It 2 U" are two club bangers that were tailor-made for the dancefloor.

True, but I think Thicke now has the room to make one like Mayer has.

Though Stones Throw is my favorite label, they're a niche label. He needs a bump IF he's going to connect to larger audiences.

I dunno, I liked the type of music Mayer was making before this album. I knew his music would change once he changed labels.

actually,Mayer Hawthorne is on a major label now. He's on Universal Republic/UMG.Where Does This Door Go is his second major-label release. It's frustrating that they can't seem to take his career to the next level. The new album even features several tracks produced by Pharrell. They gotta be more aggressive and release the right singles."Her favorite Song" is a nice track, but it's not the strongest choice for a first single, imo.

Me too, it's a very happy party album. I always thought his albums were a bit boring, but this one was made for the dancefloor boogie

Don't know how it is in the States but "Blurred Lines" the single is being played to absolute death on the radio here in the UK. The song grates on me no end...I think its the MJ whoops randomly throughout that do it. Good old UK radio always kills new artists for me by overplaying their tunes (Bruno Mars, Jessie J, etc)

But I kinda like Thicke's style....the album worth picking up or is it all as annoying as the "Blurred Lines" single?

That's not an MJ whoop. It's a Marvin Gaye whoop

I'm listening to it again as I write, u know, just to check again in case I'd be wrong: Thicke's voice just doesn't sound like Prince's at all: that's really just you tripping on the misconception that falsetto = Prince

Do robin thicke sound like prince "hell no"! Im talking about the influence. U gotta hear the influence in that song.

Prince didn't influence shit on this album. Prince didn't invent a type of falsetto sound. The littler fucker just sings high

I still disagree lol this album doesn't sound like a Prince-produced album.Prince isn't even into these types of sounds (Timbaland's distinctive electro-pop,Pharrell's minimalist funk..the disco-sounding tracks....).The only Prince influence I hear is in Robin's vocals, and only at certain times.

Timberland and Pharrell have done a lot of production that sound Prince like. You guys can hate all day P has had a big influence on these two.

To the public, Prince has a unique but generalized sound . . . almost a caricature of what he really sounds like.

.

Bands that try to sound like Prince actually sound like this caricaturized sound. The Jets, Ready For The World, etc. including impersonators and those who have been influenced by his sound such as Timberlake and Thicke.

.

Does any one of their songs sound like a direct Prince song? No. But overall, they do have "Prince-isms" that are undeniable.

.

There are only a few songs that DIRECTLY sound like Prince to me. D'Angelo's "Untitled" and Natural Selection's "Do Anything" being two of the best ones.

Since 1984 I have a 100 songs that directly sounds like Prince.
