I still stand by my words in saying that the slow (and I say "slow" strongly) decline in the music industry began in 1994.

Yeah. I couldn't stand Debbie Gibson and Tiffany by the way lol

Ugh I remember when Toy Soldiers came out (though I was only 5), and I hated that it stopped "Express Yourself" from reaching number one! lol

I rather take my chances with Debbie Gibson over Rihanna anyday of the week. At least Debbie knew how to produce and compose her tracks within her first 2 albums, not to mention knew how to play keyboards. Rihanna never does any of THAT in her whole freaking careeer.

The only thing I like about Rihanna is her booty. But that is another booty thread in General Discussion. wink

Martika had far better tracks than Toy Soldiers. In fact, her version of Cross My Heart is way better than Tracie Spencer's original AND Eighth Wonder's cover version.

Correct. Tiffany pose nude first and Debbie did it a couple of years later. But in my professional opinion, Tiffany won that round. wink

Well now, my childhood was the 1980's you know. cool

Between late 70's disco and late 80's dance-pop, there was post-disco. And you can credit AND blame Michael Jackson, Madonna, JT Taylor-era Kool & The Gang, Miami Sound Machine, and even Prince for that. mr.green

And don't even get me started with latin freestyle! I can go on all day about The Cover Girls, Expose, Stevie B, TKA, Debbie Deb, Trinere, Freestyle, Taylor Dayne, Company B, Sa-Fire, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and plenty of other from that genre that you might not want me to mention, given you anti dance-pop status and all. lol

Even today, I'll surprise that the girls of Bananarama didn't pose nude at well. They did look pretty good back in the days.

Enough about Playboy, let stay on-topic....

@Joe.......Do you also blame the Human League for the decline of mainstream music? What about Devo, Heaven 17, Depache Mode, ABC, and everyone else from the 80's synthpop genre?

a whole different beast

early 80's synth pop at least was (then) groundbreaking stuff

but late 80's dance-pop took the worst and simplest elements of early and mid 80's pop music and married them with the most juvenile and pointless lyrics the world had ever seen at that point...

you know, when somebody like Tiffany achieved superstardom, a door which led to a rotten dimension was opened FOREVER, and through that door came Britney 10 years later... along with her hordes of teen fans who treated music like a toy...

You're getting me all riled up over here. I've been saying this shit for years. Debbie Gibson is the bomb and could wipe the floor with people like Rihanna and fucking Selena Gomez. Hell even Tiffany is way better than Demi Lovato. Debbie Gibson, sang, wrote played piano and produced her own shit. Let me see these whack ass broads from today try that. 80s pop stars had more substance than the pop singers today could ever have.
