I rather take my chances with Debbie Gibson over Rihanna anyday of the week. At least Debbie knew how to produce and compose her tracks within her first 2 albums, not to mention knew how to play keyboards. Rihanna never does any of THAT in her whole freaking careeer.

The only thing I like about Rihanna is her booty. But that is another booty thread in General Discussion. wink

You're getting me all riled up over here. I've been saying this shit for years. Debbie Gibson is the bomb and could wipe the floor with people like Rihanna and fucking Selena Gomez. Hell even Tiffany is way better than Demi Lovato. Debbie Gibson, sang, wrote played piano and produced her own SHIT. Let me see these whack ass broads from today try that. 80s pop stars had more substance than the pop singers today could ever have.

you got that right= SHIT

and let me repeat myself: just because 00's pop acts are poo it doesn't mean that late 80's pop acts were any better lol

Tony, take a seat lol wink

Well now, my childhood was the 1980's you know. cool

Between late 70's disco and late 80's dance-pop, there was post-disco. And you can credit AND blame Michael Jackson, Madonna, JT Taylor-era Kool & The Gang, Miami Sound Machine, and even Prince for that. mr.green

And don't even get me started with latin freestyle! I can go on all day about The Cover Girls, Expose, Stevie B, TKA, Debbie Deb, Trinere, Freestyle, Taylor Dayne, Company B, Sa-Fire, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and plenty of other from that genre that you might not want me to mention, given you anti dance-pop status and all. lol

You almost listed the entire Freestyle lineup. lol

How does a flop album with no hits affect mainstream music at all?

There was still a lot of good mainstream music until Get Low by Lil John became the song of 2003. That song is now considered a classic.

Of course there have been way worse rap hits since.

There some others that I can't even look up on youtube without barfing.

There were a lot more pop acts than Debbie Gibson and Kylie back then. There was also this little thing called BALANCE.

First of all, most of the acts you named actually had talent; some were just corny.

For every Debbie Gibson, you also had a Whitney Houston.

The music market was not circled around CHILDREN like it is now. Now, the industry is on some Logan's Run sh*t. When you turn 30, they try to kill you (careerwise).

There were grown people doing grown music and the pop music was split. Teens did teen stuff and adults did adult stuff. There was room for a Bob Dylan and NKOTB on the charts. When labels started streamlining in the 90s, thats when the standards started dropping. Image became more important than music and stars became disposeable and the music industry had an age ceiling. Back then, nobody would have ever said "you are too old to be doing music" like you hear some of these kids saying now. That's because about 85% of the music in the mainstream now is mindless, immature drivel created by idiots who don't know shit about music. That is the difference between then and now.

Some people think that it started with new wave making rock all synthy and "tin can" drums, so it all depends on what you like.

Where it started is less important than when it took over. The problem isn't in the existience of mind-numbingly dumbass music. The problem is when its your only option.

I couldn't mention Lil'Suzy, Lisette Melendez, Angelina, & Collage because they're from the early 90's, NOT the 80's. wink

nod

I've been using the Logan's Run reference to describe the attitude about the entertainment industry as a whole, as well as some parts of corporate America.
