Bad solos in songs

I was listening to Keyshia Cole's "I Remember" just now on a radio station and got to thinking about how bad the piano solo is at the end. I mean just BAD. It's so bad until at the end of the song (during the fade), the piano player plays some wrong notes! SMH!

My question is, what songs do you consider to have bad solos?

When you say "wrong notes," do you mean the raised fourth (played as an octave)

at 4:12 before the pianist launches into that short run? If so, that's not a "wrong

note." Your ear is picking up on dissonance because it is not a "natural" tone of the

song's key. It is usually musically notated as "A4" or "d5." Jazz, and other musical

art forms which rely on instrumental improvisation often utilize these "out" notes to

enhance the musicality of whatever passage they are playing all the time! By the

way, A4 means "augmented fourth" and d5 means "diminished fifth" and they are

usually interchangeable.

But to answer your question, I think any song where Lenny Kravitz takes a solo

is usually pretty uninteresting musically. Take for an instance the solo he

pulls off in "Sugar" (My brothers and I think Kravitz doesn't improvise his solos

but writes them rather, but they're still pretty meh, if ya ask me). The solo begins

at 2:39 and ends at 3:00

The Kravitz solo is passible. The guitar solo on Oh Sherrie, the Steve Perry song is awful.

"All You Need Is Love" is the first thing that popped into my head. God bless George, but it always sounded to me like he was so bored and disinterested that he gave up in the middle. lol

Whenever I mention this album my friend feels compelled to remind me how bad Stevie's harmonica solo is on this track:

Yeah, that's Stevie as in "Stevie Wonder" - the solo begins @ 4:01 - not that Herbie is on fire on this one either. lol

^^

Stevie/Herbie:

That Stevie solo rocks to me.. He's just groovin with the track..

I dont think he needed some super outstanding solo to add a bit of downhome flavour to the tune.. Everytime i listen to that song i love what the harmonica adds to it..

In fact i love the whole album.

Lenny Kravits - Sugar.

I'm not bothered by that solo..

Obviously its not craig ross playing it but,

I think it goes along with the vibe..

Lenny always used to have a few questionable things in his tracks before he went digital..

Vocals.. extreme Compression, Distorted things, Effects..ect..

It sounds rough around the edges & like early kravitz.. its cool.

RHCP I Should Have Lied. I like rhythm guitar in songs by Peppers but lead guitar is often terribledexcept when Hilal Slovak and Dave Navarro played

novabrkr-

When i think of bad solos i think of people fumbling around and playing any ol' nonsense

that has:

no groove, no pocket, bad intonation, the wrong tone for the song..

There's a ton of so called Producers these days that pull up a plug in and hire someone

that claims to play an instrument, to come in and attempt to add a drop of realness to a track-

I wouldn't put Herbie or Stevie or even Lenny in that catagory.

But... that's pretty much how I'd describe that solo by Stevie. lol
