Truthfully, there is no deep meaning to this mix. It’s aural wallpaper, and it often has it's deepest, best affect when you aren't paying attention to it at all. Use it to relax, read, sleep, meditate, do yoga, stare at the sunset, or the rain, or while you do nothing. It’s just a super chilled out mix created with music by artists who specialize in ambient, drone and modern classical. I listen to a lot of this kind of music and thought I’d take a shot at making a quick “mixtape” with it.
To begin, the quick part was challenge enough for me, as I have roughly 4,100 tracks in my AMBIENT+DRONE+EXPERIMENTAL+MODERN CLASSICAL folder. And that folder is specific to artists who create those styles of music. It doesn’t take into account the ambient tracks by people who are producing other types of electronic music, who regularly include a beatless track or two on each release. Those are kept in a completely different folder. Next was the reality that many of these artists regularly produce tracks over the twenty minute mark, often over forty, and it’s not uncommon for one sixty-seventy minute track to comprise the entire release. So for this mix I forced myself to stay away from the extremely long ones and really focus on shorter pieces that are my favorites, or that I felt best fit the flow I was trying to achieve.
Whether in headphones or on speakers, this music works best if you can find a relatively low volume level that you are comfortable with and let your ears adjust to it. There are some louder sections and some quieter ones throughout the mix, but never is there a point where any sudden crashing, banging or otherwise jarring noises jump out of nowhere. It’s chill all the way.

Thanks.1. Mirror - Islands Pt 1 Starts off with no music. Just some rain and some clacking noises, maybe something blowing around in the wind. Church organ like drones with a slight choir like overtone slowly creep in and eventually take over completely. An introductory track. Not a lot of melody in this one.
2. Stars Of The Lid - Dust Breeding (1.316)+ Starts off very quiet and builds on the same type of drone sounds as the first track, only this one is more of a loop, less a constant. Melodic counterpoint floats occasionally floats around in the background, trying to push towards the surface as the loop slowly builds in intensity before fading off into the distance again.
3. Peter Broderick - Three Film Score Intakes Pt 1 Solo piano. In the country? Moving through space and time? In the background train track warning bells, people talking, a plane flies overhead, a violin. It's a respit. A chance to catch your breath and let your mind adjust to a different kind of sound after the first droning 15 minutes.
4. Keith Fullerton Whitman - Stereo Music For Hi-Hat Sounds of gamelan, or bells (or possibly processed hi-hat

6. Ora - Distances Long, slow, quiet drones underneath creaking metal hinges and slower than resting heartbeat, bom, bom, bom...
7. Oren Ambarchi - As Far As The Eye Can See A pure analogue drone track that builds and morphs slowly, barely changing up to the 9:30 mark, where a new tone is introduced, taking you off into the horizon, as far as the eye can see. Tracks 6 and 7 are definitely the most challenging listens in the mix. If you're into it, I imagine they'll slide by without much notice. If you're not, I could see you heading towards the door.
8. Nils Frahm - Dedication, Loyalty. The second respit. Rewarded for sticking it out this long, you get a beautiful solo piano piece from Nils. It's completely normal in every way, but after the last twenty minutes of otherworldly drones it sounds very alien when those first few keys are struck.
9. Stars Of The Lid - Fucked Up (3:57 AM) Up to this point, everything has been relatively even on the emotional plain. Plenty of light, and no dark to speak of. Things change here, as shadows creep in around the edges. The drone that stretches the entire length of the track sounds less organic, more metalic. The shifting waves of droning melodies that wash over the track as it progresses could be felt as power, or the beginning of fear. The sounds of bellowing viking horns, or maybe just vikings in the second half of the song suggest victory, regardless. The crescendo of the mix.
10. Organum - Æo The epilogue. An asian pan flute cries mournfully as a deep bass drone builds, quietly at first, then joined at the peak by slow rolling cymbals, and for a short time a second, higher voice. Distortion takes hold, fades out, the pan flute signals the end. And we out. | |

Mirror is the collaborative effort of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann. They have released at least twenty albums and one EP.
Ora began as the duo of Andrew Chalk and Darren Tate. Ora often incorporated source recordings from Jonathan Coleclough, Lol Coxhill, Colin Potter and Daisuke Suzuki. Later, Andrew became less involved in Ora recordings, and was replaced by Colin Potter. They have released at least fifteen albums and one 10" single.
Andrew Chalk has been active since 1985 as Ferial Confine and has worked with many associates over the years, such as David Jackman (in Organum), Vortex Campaign, The New Blockaders, Darren Tate (in Ora), Giancarlo Toniutti, Jonathan Coleclough, and Christoph Heemann (in Mirror). He has a number of releases under his own name which have won widespread acclaim, on labels such as Robot Records, Christoph Heemann's Streamline label and his own Faraway Press label. The Mirror project released a steady string of stunnng, highly sought-after records in limited quantites and Chalk's releases on Faraway Press have followed this aesthetic. Since 1985, on his own and with collaborators, he has released somewhere around 77 albums and 11 singles/EPs.

Stars Of The Lid have released eight albums and three EPs. Although the two main members of the band have released many albums separately, they have not released any new material together since 2007. Whether or not they intend to release any music in the futre as SOTL remains uknown.
Their 1997 album 'The Ballasted Orchestra' (from which Fucked Up (3:57 AM) was taken) is one on my all-time favorites.
Unlike a good deal of the other music included in this mix, much of what SOTL does is created with "normal" instruments whose sound is then greatly processed and tweaked.

Peter Broderick is an ex-member of Horse Feathers, a current member of Loch Lomond as well as the touring bands for Efterklang, Norfolk & Western and Laura Gibson.
He plays a whole bunch of different instruments, but most of his solo releases are based around his piano compositions, either straight, prepared or processed.
As a solo artist, alone and with collaborators, he has released at least eighteen albums and six singles/EPs since 2007.

Keith Fullerton Whitman is an odd duck. He started off as an IDM/Drill & Bass producer before moving on to creating and releasing various different types of ambient, drone, electroacoustic, musique concrete and experimental music. On his own, with collaborators and in groups he has released at least 45 albums and 17 singles/EPs.
He is also the man behind the somewhat controversial Creel Pone and New England Electric Music Company labels, which together have amassed over 100 releases.
He also owns and operates Mimaroglu Music Sales where you can purchase some of the most rare and sought after small batch releases on the planet.

Vikki Jackman is either the wife or daughter of David Jackman (aka Organum) (I believe it's the latter) and is in Marsfield with Andrew Chalk. She has only a few, very beautiful releases to her name.

Oren Ambarchi... there is too much stuff to say about Oren Ambarchi. Australian experimental electronic guitarist, percussionist and electronic music composer. Born in Sydney in 1969, performing live since 1986. He's played with an enourmous amount of people, including Sunn O)))). Solo and with collaborators he has released at least 60 albums and 19 singles/EPs.
Some of his stuff is stunningly beautiful. Some of it makes me want to throw large objects through small windows.

Nils Frahm. Piano player, producer and composer born in 1982. He founded Durton Studio in early 2008. He has released at least thirteen albums and five singles/EPs on his own and as a collaborator. His music is modern or neo-classical, folk, world, ambient, beautiful.

Organum. Organum is David Jackman. David Jackman is living musical history.
Elusive composer and visual artist David Jackman began his career in the U.K. with experimental group Scratch Orchestra alongside Cornelius Cardew. Later he created Organum. This seminal improvisational group was also the breeding ground for AMM and the New Zealand percussion composer Phil Dadson.
Jackman's work as Organum was documented on limited-edition vinyl LPs in the '80s, and in the '90s he released numerous CDs. The albums Submission, released by Complacency in the U.S., and Veil of Tears, on Matchless, exhibit a strongly minimalist aligned music, with an attention to the sonic effects of massed string drones and metal percussion. Many Organum recordings were made as location specific happenings, taking advantage of unusual reverberant spaces to enhance the music performance, such as tunnels, caves, and a highway overpass, as well as many outdoor natural environments. Highly regarded in avant-garde music circles, he has worked with members of Nurse With Wound, Jim O'Rourke, Robert Hampson of Main, and Christophe Heemann of H.N.A.S. This dark ambient drone music that at times recalls the minimalist violin drones of Tony Conrad or the electronic soundscapes of Morphogenesis, although it is often called post-industrial, it is far from the futuristic imagery conjured by such a tag. In fact, this music has roots in Medieval and Eastern ritual music, hence Jackman has titled one of his works "Kammer," which references the early music genre of the same name. On the collaboration CD Crux + Flayed on Matchless, Jackman and percussionist Eddie Prevost used electronics to transform sounds of a drum and cymbal improvisation that results in a dense drone alive with overtones and harmonics. This approach differed from the heavily reverberated strings improvisations of prior works. Akin to the work of David Toop and Max Eastley, in that it is inspired by British minimalism, free improvisation, and sound sculpture, the music is Zen-like and can be simultaneously elating and dark. David Jackman, not being a fan of the longer playing format of CD, has released at least 59 singles/EPs (mostly on 7, 10 and 12" vinyl) and 22 albums.
