The Future Sound Of London

"British duo who met in the 1980's in Manchester. Their very influential discography shows off influences spanning acid house, hardcore techno, ambient, krautrock, 60's psychedelica, and more. Previously Dougans, as Humanoid, had a UK Top 10 hit with Stakker Humanoid. Together as FSOL, they scored a major crossover success with Papua New Guinea. Their first full-length Accelerator charted their dancefloor-friendly early career, after which FSOL moved into deeper, more album-oriented world. Lifeforms was a double-disc set spanning long stretches of breakbeat-flavored ambience.

It was followed by Dead Cities which added hip-hop, trip-hop, industrial textures, and bleak urban imagery into their mix of influences. Their ISDN album compiled music from their ISDN-uplinked radio broadcasts from the mid-1990's. After Dead Cities came out in 1996, they dropped off the radar. After a long hiatus in which they were surrounded by rumors of insanity and drug addiction, the Papua New Guinea Translations concept remix album came out, followed by the full-length The Isness and more material under the Amorphous Androgynous name."

Someday this war's gonna end. Never get outta the boat.

This Sunday and for any other Sunday to come, on any given Sunday and sometimes on Sundays therafter or as near as dammit. On any other day, or on that day, the people will come together, not only to rejoice and taste the sounds that nourish but to stand for the right of any free man, regardless of creed or colour, to float on imaginary sandals and be at one with his lesbian side.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. Let Man-lesbian hetros ring from the curvaceous trippy slopes of their planets. Let Further Self Evident Truths spin in the red strobe of dotness for it shall sound good, some of it. But not only that, let the cats out for a quack and when this happens, when we allow the cats out for a quack, we can go unconcious and we can say, I'll... Have a dream...

This one's odd but, at the Stones Throw site, someone last year shared a snippet from a Buck Rogers episode of the late 70s which had a deliciously quirky synthesiser score of what the composer envisaged as "space music."

I checked my box and I still have the flyer for this party, too. eek Move along to 1:05 to get an idea of why the early-mid 90s parties in the Bay Area were some of the best, EVER! That's in the morning, after dancing all night. Folks just refusin' to leave. biggrin

The Future Sound Of London - Defining Sound, The Early Years

Still very four on the floor with a house vibe, but starting to reach for something higher. That FSOL sound creeping in around the edges...

Art Science Technology - Esus Flow (Vast Galaxy Mix) (1990)

Their first album, released in 1991 during the height of their alias fun (obviously they were saving their best tracks for this), for me, still fits the description above. It's good music, and it points to what their next few albums and EPs would sound like, but it's not quite there. However, it contains Papua New Guinea, and that track is completely untouchable in my opinion. I've heard/seen people say that track is overrated in recent times. I always ask if they were ever on a dancefloor when it was played from 91-93, and then the conversation is over. The 12" Original Mix has already been posted, and I don't think there's a better version than that one, to be honest. But I always liked the Dumb Child Of Q mix, too (basically, the original without the drum programming.)

Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea (Dumb Child Of Q) (1991)

Another track I dig from the first album...

Future Sound Of London - Calcium (1991)

I wanted to post 1 In 8 as well but YouTube can't find it. neutral

The Future Sound Of London - A Sound Defined, Experimentation, The Edges of Psychedelia

For me, the real Future Sound Of London starts with the Cascade EP. Produced in a format they would use several times over the next few years, it contains several remixes, or "parts" of the title track. Thing is, the tracks were rarely anything like the original album versions, and they were often blended together, created one long journey.

In regards to this particular release, Cascade, it's amazing how far they had moved forward in less than two years. Papua New Guinea is a GREAT song, but this is the music that actually made me a lifelong fan of FSOL...

Papua New Guinea - Cascade (1993)

Part Two begins around 7:12

Part Three begins around 16:30

Part Four begins around 20:40

Part Five bings around 25:10 ends at 31:20 (the music after that is the "Shortform" single edit of the album version)

More soul- and jazz-infused electronics from the godfather of U.S. and U.K. garage, Todd Edwards.

Steal Your Heart (1995)

Saved My Life (1995)

Sunshine: Sunrise (1997)

Push The Love (Dub) (1997)

Thank You (1998)

St Germain - Alabama Blue...ix) (1995)

There's nothing I love more than a pinch of swing in my music.

The next FSOL album, the two CD release, 'Lifeforms', has never moved me as much as the EPs released from it. I like it well enough, but it's a very confused album. It's largely ambient, but it's not at all relaxed. And it completely ditches the house rhythms the were known for just a couple years prior. Instead, it gives you an hour and a half of layered sound collages, off-kilter, undanceable beats, and it starts to get dark and uneasy around the edges. It wasn't even all that fun on drugs, to be honest. lol

A couple of the tracks I like from this album...

Future Sound Of London - Eggshells (1994)

Future Sound Of London - Vit (1994)

Cerebral is a good one, too. lol

The next EP released from the 'Lifeforms' album was, uhh, 'Lifeforms'. lol Another great piece of music, it reminded me very quickly of why I liked them so much. I mean, you can't go wrong with horse hooves and water splashes for your rhythm tracks. lol The haunting vocal samples, middle-eastern influences and near perfect build and pacing throughout the EP didn't hurt, either.

'Far-Out Son Of A Lung and The Ramblings Of A Madman', FSOL's 1995 EP has always felt like a slight acknowlegment to the fact that last couple years had been hard to wrap your head around as a fan. For FSOL, it was almost funky, jazzy, and sexy, and it had solid beats all over the place. Although it's only four tracks (roughly), it's one of the most quality releases in their catalog (my opinion, of course).

Fonky already posted 'Ramblings Of A Madman', here's a couple of my other favorites...

FSOL created a ton of psychedelic, acid drenched videos over the years. These are bad quality, but they are official...

Future Sound Of London - Snakehips Pt 1 (1995)

Future Sound Of London - Snakehips Pt 2 (1995)

Future Sound Of London - Smokin' Japanese Babe

If FSOL's last album, 'Lifeforms' was starting to get dark and uneasy around the edges, the next one, 'Dead Cities', was completely immersed in that darkness, uncomfortable, paranoid and angry, and an absolute masterpiece.

I could easily post the entire album, but since I doubt very many people are paying attention to this, and the people who are probably know all this already, I'll try to just post some of them...

These first three tracks open the album, 'Her Face Forms In Summertime' is one of my all-time favorites...

Future Sound Of London - Herd Killing (1996)

Future Sound Of London - Dead Cities (1996)

Future Sound Of London - Her Face Forms In Summertime (1996)

Future Sound Of London - Yage (1996)

And then there's 'My Kingdom', an EP based around a track from 'Dead Cities'. In my opinion, this is the single greatest piece of music they've ever released. Other people feel differently, I'm sure, but for me, this is it...

Future Sound Of London - My Kingdom (1996)

Part Two begins around 10:50

Part Three begins around 14:00

Part Four Begins around 21:00 and ends at 26:20 (the music after that is the "Shortform" single edit of the album version)

Then they disappeared for six years....

When the returned they were all of a sudden a 60s psych/folk/rock/electronic band thing, with real instrumentation and singing, and barely even a nod to the sounds of the sounds of their past. That music grew on me, and in the end recognized enough of what I loved about them before that I stuck with it. Good thing, too, because they eventually went on to release a HUGE amount of archival (still doing so) and new, more experimental material through their website (which has evidently been a VERY succesful venture for them). But never anything that sounded remotely like THIS ^^, for which I will always be a little bit sad.

Yep, I'm convinced. Discogs is red hot. wink I was looking at it last night, when I could get the lappy working. Easy to get lost for a while, I'm leading myself all over the place getting far too involved biggrin

Twiki was a legend too and there's nothin wrong with space music. wink

FSOL were shit hot. Cerebus pretty much said it all. Or should we just post the lot? lol They were up there with Black Dog and B12 in my book. Different thing yeah, but quality stuff. A lot of people would prolly put em in front of the other two but I couldn't. Cobain always seemed too far up himself for me but the tunes were mustard. Videos and graphics weren't bad either.

Cascade was the bollocks. nod They did a lot of good stuff. I Haven't heard a lot of the newer bits but I love the oldies. I had a mate offer me £100 for my Papau New Guinea once. I shoulda sold it, he was mental. Shows how mad I am that I didn't. We were shit-faced to be fair.

I remember the first of their 'Pod-Room Transmissions' too, well worth a listen. There's hours of it. 'Early days of internet broadcasting'... We heard it on KissFM with it's poxy 'spoiler technology'. Didn't have 'the internet' or ISDN connection.

http://youtu.be/vU7rBcEOczM

A lot of tracks I don't remember by name. I'll know the tune or where it is on the vinyl so clicking links in the thread and hearing all my favourites come on is cracking me up. Or were they my own posts? nuts

I've been pulling out records I haven't seen for years. I've got boxes of tapes all over the place and was just pissin and moanin about it when I found a little bag of skunk with the Pod Room tapes! lol BONUS! Fuck knows how old it is but I'll have summa that.

Have to look up the old Warp videos later. Artificial Intelligence stuff. They were shit hot too. There's another birds nest to get into... Warp. I love it.

Lets try something new here. PLEASE do not post YouTube videos within the thread. Rather, post them as links, like this...

This will make the thread load MUCH faster, particularly when Replying, and allow more people to take part because their browsers won't freeze (assuming there will ever be that many videos in the thread lol ).

I should of thought this for my "Whats your song for today" thread
