Jam & Lewis Ink New Publishing Deal, Album Underway

January 30, 2013

Link

The long-running songwriting and production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have signed an exclusive worldwide publishing administration agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group, the company announced today.

The deal will encompass all new work written by Jam & Lewis and exclude the duo's massive back catalog.

Both Jam and Lewis expressed their excitement about the new deal. "Terry and I have shared a long history of success with Evan and Zach over the years and are thrilled to be partnered with them and their innovative team at Universal," Jam said.

Since forming their music company Flyte Tyme in 1982, Jam and Lewis have garnered more than 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond albums.

Jam and Lewis also have more number ones than any other songwriting and production team in history, with over 100 Billboard Top 10 songs, including 26 number one R&B hits and 16 number one Hot 100 hits.

Also five-time Grammy Award winners, Jam & Lewis has more than 100 ASCAP awards for songwriting and publishing including themost recent ASCAP Awards for the number one Billboard Rap/Hip-Hop song "My Last" by Big Sean and Chris Brown, and the Number One Gospel Song of the Year "I Smile" by Kirk Franklin.

2013 marks the 30th year of Jam and Lewis' business partnership, which they will be commemorating with their first ever Jam & Lewis album project.

What about the Time/07?

Wish they would have had this deal when the album dropped over a year ago.

Oh that's right! & 'I Smile' by Kirk Franklin samples 'Tell Me if You Still Care' by The S.O.S. Band. So they got the publishing award for it.

Man I wish Prince would allow his songs to be sampled . He would make millions. I guess he treasures his "MasterPieces"...

Sounds to me like it's time for the Fellas to get that much deserve Rock N Roll Hall of Fame honor..They're pass the 25yr qualifying mark....

I wish they'd get back with Janet for 2 more Albums. It's a shame her talent is getting lost in throw-away CD's....She's younger than Madge and still should be doing the thang...

Not even going to bother pointing out how inaccurate factualy that statement is. I'm looking forward to a Jam and Lewis album. I wonder if it will be a Quincy Jones all stars type of record? Will Janet be featured in some way? Or will Terry do all the vocals. There are so many possibilites. This is very exciting news.

It was a labor of love for Jimmy and Terry but sadly not everyone was committed to seeing the project through. Morris had his agenda, Jesse had his, etc...etc.

I have a hard time believing that Jam & Lewis didn't have enough clout to move The Time/07 project forward but maybe things weren't moving fast enough to satisfy the others?

I'm thrilled for them but I'm hoping this project involves real artists/musicians and not the assembly line, flavor of the month type of so called talent we already have too much of.

I hear you! I should say pre-senile, pre-sellout Quincy Jones. Not that Bossanova BS Q. With that said, maybe they'll collaborate with their litany of real artists they've worked with throughout their career and include some new geniunely talented artists.

Who knows, maybe their upcoming tribute performance for Clarence Avant will serve as a warm up. I think this new project will show that they can still funk with the best of them. Lately they've been relinquished to album cuts instead of singles on the projects they've worked on.

Jam & Lewis Prep First Album Under New Publishing Deal

jam and lewis

*The veteran production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have signed an exclusive worldwide publishing administration agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group that will see the duo release their first album project, the company announced on Wednesday.
The deal will encompass all new work written by Jam and Lewis and exclude the duo’s massive back catalog, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Both Jam and Lewis expressed their excitement about the new deal. “Terry and I have shared a long history of success with Evan and Zach over the years and are thrilled to be partnered with them and their innovative team at Universal,” Jam said.

Since forming their music company Flyte Tyme in 1982, Jam and Lewis have garnered more than 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond albums with artists including Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Beyonce, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Usher, Yolanda Adams, Herb Alpert, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart, New Edition, Human League, Earth, Wind and Fire, Mariah Carey, Robert Palmer, Gwen Stefani, Kanye West and Janet Jackson.

Jam and Lewis also have more number ones than any other songwriting and production team in history, with over 100 Billboard Top 10 songs, including 26 number one R&B hits and 16 number one Hot 100 hits.

Also five-time Grammy Award winners, Jam & Lewis has more than 100 ASCAP awards for songwriting and publishing including the most recent ASCAP Awards for the number one Billboard Rap/Hip-Hop song “My Last” by Big Sean and Chris Brown, and the Number One Gospel Song of the Year “I Smile” by Kirk Franklin.

2013 marks the 30th year of Jam and Lewis’ business partnership, which they will be commemorating with their first ever Jam & Lewis album project, under the new agreement with UMPG.

I'm looking forward to hearing their first album. I know Terry can sing & I admire Jimmy's keyboard playing....

Last year, Jam & Lewis were working with a teen group called The RoneyBoys. I wonder if Jam & Lewis is going to release the group's album under this deal.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

If the upcoming album is a Quincy Jones-type of album, Jam & Lewis could have features with new artists like these as well as more established ones like Janet and Mary J. I remember an interview they did a long time ago on Video Soul about plans to release an album using their backing musicians and vocalists from Flyte Tyme Productions called The Secret, but it never came about.

Prince DOES approve samples but only rarely. He doesn't like women being called bitches (except in his own recording "Irresistible Bitch") and I have heard the songs that had to be redone because Prince did not approve the content. If you heard them, you know why he didn't want to be associated with them. For some reason, anytime an artist goes to sample Prince, their writing goes in the gutter.

Here is one Prince approved while he was labelmates with Big Daddy Kane, and I find it very appealing.

Yeah it's unfortunate since she's awesome on tour and I enjoyed Discipline, but I really think she should act instead if her albums aren't selling. I finally think Madonna should stop with the albums too if she's going to continue putting out the type of music she did on MDNA, her weakest album to date IMO.

Ive been waiting since 1987 to hear The Secret.

I have that Billboard magazine fimr then where it was a Mn Music special and it advertised Jam & Lew have a "Secret' etc. I fugred it was made up of those two, 'Bean, Monte etc ..basically the set up of the band on the Janet live Control video. But who doing lead vocals? Lisa Keith?

Well it's no sense in going round and round again with who caused the split but i

find it ironic that the band made a statement that they would continue without

Jesse only to renege. The band could have still went on. The Original 7 is a name

only. I wish Jam and Lewis luck. No one outside the Original 7 will ever really know what

happened.

I am aware that Prince doesn't allow cursing in his muziq. WHich is why he turns down a lot of sampling. . Glad U get the point though.
