How would you rate Meshell Ndegeocello as a singer? Good, above average, Average or a better instrumentalist than singer? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries." | |

Limited vocal range..limited overall. A 4 out of 10. She doesn't really even sing, she whispers or talks. The music in a song could be a tour de force and here she comes to the mic sounding like she just got out of bed with morning breath. "Climb in my fur." | |

She doesn't strike me as fantastic or amazing. She just works well with her music. She's not awful, she just works well with what she's got. | |

Limited range and aspiration a bit too heavy for my personal tastes. That said, she ain't singing for me, and she uses her voice to deliver the emotion and pathos of her songs well enough, which is primary.
Her spoken-word delivery is that of a master, on the other hand. She can use that rich alto to go from downright scary to crazy seductive in one song, all convincingly. [Edited 12/22/12 18:27pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I think her voice is perfect for her music. She has a lot of emotion in her voice...As Lammastide said she can get emotional (sexy, angry, pain) and it works.
Gil Scot Heron wasn't much of a singer either but he got his message across. MeShell is the same way. | |

I kinda look at her like Gil too. Meshell actually didn't really needed to "sing" to get her point across. Plus her style of music doesn't really call for "singing". I've been cool with it since I first heard her some 19 years ago. | |
