the decline in music correlates w/the detoriaration of culture after it was exploited to the tilt by the late 1980s

Music was already in a state of duress when the 90's hit

where all of the contemporaries stars of that period from MC HAMMER, PAULA ABDUL, MARIAH CAREY, JENNIFER LOPEZ, and many others who were selling multi platinum albums in the tens of millions, they did so by incorporating samples of the real music that was crafted by the luminaries some 10 years before, in MC HAMMER'S case, he didn't even wait ten years

YOU CAN'T TOUCH THIS released in 1990, which relied heavily on RICK JAMES'S hit SUPER FREAK in 1981, propelled HAMMER to superstardom

JAMES had to sue HAMMER for copyright infringement, before HAMMER allowed RICK to receive songwriting credits for sampling his music, or in other words, get paid....

that's why "POP MUSIC" appeared to be so vibrant during this period because it was living off the bloodline cultivated by real r&b music, as well as the musical efforts from many of our fellow musicians who thrived in other genres....

but see, that course has dried up like a mushroom, and that's why everything sounds homogenized today, or for all practical terms.....washy and lackluster.........

and it happened fast too, real fast.....

see, music don't lie, can't make it sound good if it aint good.......

Why is 80s music so good?

Lyrics of the 80's -

We love and we never tell
What places our hearts in the wishing well
Love lead us into the stream
And it’s sink or swim
Like it’s always been
And I keep on loving you
It’s the only thing to do
When the angel sings
There are greater things
Can I give them all to you ~ Culture Club - Victims

I find it funny to read all these nostalgic comments. The 80s had ALOT of great artists and song, but it also suffered from lazy productions.

Someone said the 80s was the period of real instruments, real drums etc... Wrong! This was a time when drum machines was getting very popular, both linn and 808 drum machines started to make drum recordings alot cheaper, more "accurate" and easier to handle in studio. Also the very lazy use of the excact same of gated reverb. THe productions often sounded thin and uninspired, sounded cheaper and lacked the raw and real energy of previous eras. If you see the wider picture of the 80s, yes it contained Prince, MJ, Madonna, Whitney etc etc... but I seriously find alot of the productions and songs from this decade cheap and outdated. I actually much prefer so called retro musicians emulating what was cool about the 80s. When the 80s sound is used as a creative tool, and not just something sounding "modern". When you are going for a modern sound without using it as a creative tool, it sounds dull and fake to me. Personally I love alot from the 80s, but I feel like most of the orgers here are born in the 80s, and therefore has nostalgic feelings toward it.

There's just too much music for a decade to sound wack if you give the real treasures the main attention.

THe 90s had Bjørk, Prodigy, Nirvana, Metallica, Radiohead, Tupac, OutKast, Whitney, R.E.M, Jamiroquai, Blur, Simply Red, Red Hot Chillipeppers, The Fugees, Oasis, George Michael, MJ, Alanis Morisette. These are just a more or less random top sellers of the 90s. The variety in mainstream sound in the 90s was to me greater than in the 80s. All decades has had a few gems, and ALOT of shit.

why is 80s music so good ???

because it was the culmination of the 60s and 70s, while adding some amazing innovations

after the 80s pop music didn't truly have a lot more to say

the first half of the 90s was good, after that it all went downhill, slowly but steadily towards the 2004-2012-... rock bottom...

Exactly. The 90s (once it got totally kicked in and fully changed) was an absolutely depressing decade.

disagree
90's were better for rock music than the 80`s, imho. While this is true only for the first half, after 1995, came the depression. Now ... I measure not decades, and a few years .... 00's were very uneven in general, but there were some enlightenment.

There's other types of music in the world besides "pop", R&B, and rock. Even with those, there's way more acts not played on the radio, than on it, and it's always been that way. So saying music was/is in duress doesn't make much sense to me.

If you're into "American" music, then there's tejano, country, zydeco, Hawaiian, bluegrass, jazz, cajun, blues, easy listening, gospel, Native American, barbershop quartets, dixieland, mambo, ragtime, and so on.

And you wonder why gay men are always hitting on you? Hell, you've got our tastes. lol

I feel the exact same way except for me, it wasn't eurodance, it was house music such as Martha Wash, Ce Ce Penniston, Crystal Water, The 49ers, Robin S, M People, etc. I hated everything else about the 1990s music except for Prince.

The other poster did say "American" music, which means nothing. It's not a genre. wink

The gayer, the funkier, higher the pitch, higher the bpm,the soft melody mixed with hard rhythm the better the music.

VainAndy-You don't go much clubbing anymore,because of today's music,right?

How do you fill the void?

All the clubs here in NYC play shit-hop,bad techno and boring indie music. The shit brings me down.I went to a club with my cousin and I wanted to shoot the speakers out.It affects my mood, social skills.i don't want to dance or socialize with anyone. My mood, confidence, soul is completely sucked out.I don't like to drink to numb my emotions.

In the 90s,i was a teenager and they played good house and eurodance music. In those days, they had retro clubs like culture club-which played 80s music and they had other clubs that still played disco music. Now that music is too old.the clubs now that do play older music, always mixed it up with rap music like 2 chainz.

I think I've been out twice in the last five years. No, I don't go out anymore because the music in the clubs is all boring as hell. There's nothing danceable to it. In the black clubs, it's shit hop which is slower than Lawrence Welk, and in the white clubs, it's trance is soooooooo fast you can't dance to it and the folks on the dance floor look like rabbits hopping around on pogo sticks. If you can't shake ass and roll titties to it, it ain't danceable. lol And now that the new laws have gone into effect and you can't even smoke cigarettes in nightclubs, well, they can forget about me going out from now on because when I drink, I'm a chain smoking motherfucker. lol

In the 2000s, I mainly went out when I got extremely horny and would go hunting for some dick. I no longer went out to simply party and have a good time because there's no such thing as having a good time in a club nowadays because the music is so boring. But it ain't worth dodging the police on the way home and possibly getting a DUI. If the clubs were still jumping like they used to, I might risk it, but I'm not going to risk it for a dull night on the town and then possibly going home without any dick also. lol

For years though, I've mainly gone to friends' houses who have a collection of good music and we drank, partied, had a good time, and I would spend the night there afterwards. Most of them have either died now or moved away so I mainly stay at home now and drink and play my own music and have company over from time to time. But good music definitely needs to be back in the mainstream again because like I always say...."searching" to find good music is useless because you'll only end up listening to it alone. The dicks are where the mainstream music is and the dicks aren't going to come knocking on your door while you're sitting at home listening to something good that you "searched" and found. lol

I do agree with the point on House Parties. They are much better mainly because we can control what is being played. I LOVE clubbing but the music is shit shit shit ugh...the only good part is when they do the throwback segment as well as socialize aspect but its hard to party to music that just isnt good.

House parties are the absolute best, especially when you've got friends who may bring someone with them that you've never met. And the number one rule at the door is, if you ain't willing to share your friend's dick, then you better leave his ass at home because somebody's gonna try to seduce his ass eventually once they get tipsy and I keep plenty of gin to make you sin in my apartment for that new guest to get him horny.

Just like a few weeks ago. A friend of mine shows up at my apartment with a friend of his. We're sitting there drinking and I'm playing music and I play "Take A Chance" by Nuance. This guy not only knew the song, but said he used to have the 12 Inch. I said "Wait a minute, how old are you" and he said he's 43. Then I said it's about time that my friend brought an actual adult over. He laughed and asked what had he been bringing over. I said apparently he must think my place is a child molestor haven because he keeps bringing little motherfuckers over who are in their early 20s and they're sitting there bored all night and boring me as well. Then, he says "Oh no baby, my 43 year old ass ain't no child, feel this right here", and I reach over and feel that great big ole snake coiled up underneath those jeans and he's wearing a T shirt and even though it's all the way up to his neckline, I can still see loads of hair peeking out of the neckline. I had those damn pants halfway unzipped and my friend grabs him by the hand and leaves. The damn party pooper! lol

The dicks are where the mainstream music is and the dicks aren't going to come knocking on your door while you're sitting at home listening to something good that you "searched" and found. lol

Nothing like hearing obscure music and sharing it with the 6 other people in the world who love it.
