Well that proves they're "unsung"? Why would a well known act be unsung? Which is why I don't get the point of this show. If they were really about "unsung" acts, 99% of the performers they've shown already don't qualify to me. At any rate, Surface was successful on the adult contemporary and pop charts, so they're not really "unsung". Just because the story about Surface might not be known, doesn't make them "unsung". They still had success as a group and producing other acts. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wow! I completely forgot about that group. I thought they were sooooooo corny. I mean, even now looking at that album..... mad corny! I think the only song I recall from them is "Happy".

Here's a couple of songs they produced: You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Fun fact: One of the members of the group was "Let's Get It On" co-songwriter and "Gotta Get Myself Together" composer Ed Townsend's son.

The guy on the left is lead singer Bernard Jackson. I have this cassette. When i bought the cassette i looked at the picture of Bernard and thought he looked like former Eagles qb Randall Cunningham at that time. My favorite song from this album was Closer Than Friends. One of the other guys is deceased. I think David Pic Conley. Don't laugh at my funk

I was a huge fan of Surface I bought their first album in 1987 (the one with "Happy") and I wore it out....had to buy a few additional copies!! "Happy" was the big hit,but I was actually more impressed with the other songs....."Let's Try Again","We're All Searching","Lately",etc.
Their next album in 1988 scored a Number One hit single ("Shower Me With Your Love") and the album after that also scored a Number One pop hit "(The First Time").For awhile there,it seemed like these guys were on the way to superstardom, but I didn't hear too much from them after 1990.

Ronnie Dyson needs an Unsung episode. He was the most underrated 70s soul singer. It's sad that most of you don't even know who he is.

Now this is someone I would consider "unsung", and not The O'Jays, Ohio Players, Ray Parker Jr., Surface, or Clark Sisters. It might be nice to hear their stories, but they show those acts because a Ronnie Dyson wouldn't get many viewers. TV is just about the ratings. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Most of the people profiled on Unsung veer from mid-profile artists (Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, etc.) to higher-profile (O'Jays, Gerald Levert, etc.) They'll never air, I don't think, any artist that was literally under the radar.

I'm not interested in any of these unsungs .. maybe The Whispers. Were the others announced?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not really interested in Ronnie Dyson per se, or think that they should do a show about him. I think he only has 2 or 3 albums. I just used him as example as someone that I think fits the definition of the show's title. I understand they're not going to show a totally obscure act, but what about a Little Milton or a Denise LaSalle? Acts like these had long careers (longer than some of the acts shown already) and released many records without a lot of fanfare. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Some of yall question the acts chosen to appear on Unsung. Whether they fit the definition or not you won't see 90 percent of these acts on other networks. Kudos to TvOne on not just Unsung but shows like Crime Stories and Life After as well. Don't laugh at my funk

I dug the Marvin episode on Crime Stories. Jam Master Jay's came on this Monday, didn't it?

Yes it did. Unfortunately the only time i can see TVone is when i'm visiting my mom. I dumped TVone back in July for cable. I will have to search for Jay's episode online. I saw Marvin's too. I liked Karyn White's Life After. It seems like their doing some good Life After episodes this season. Don't laugh at my funk
