I wonder since he was bumped off last season will Lou Rawls be the new season's first episode?

Oooh, I'd love to see that. My parents wore the hell out of this record back in the day, and I'm still rocking it in my itunes lol

I wonder will they cover that gold digging widow of his that got caught on tape admitting she was going to keep his children from getting a dime from his estate as soon as he croaked: she's one bold ass trollop and I believe the tape was inadmissible in court so she got everything just as she planned hmm

I bet they will. I heard Lou's children was interviewed. Lou led such a troubled life. I was shocked considering how cool, calm and collective he was but he was no different than his musical nemesis Marvin when it came to life struggles. neutral

really? i was a girl when he had a string of hits, which was considered a "comeback" of sorts since he had been around a while. but there was no hint of "troubles", i don't ever remember hearing about them. like you said, lou always came across as cool, calm and collected so maybe that's why no one looked too deeply. sad

it's so funny how people become when money is involved. i don't understand how lou's wife would get everything unless he made her the sole beneficiary of his will. if he died intestate, then i believe it's a 50/50 split (at least in cali it is) between the wife and kids (they have to split the 50 among themselves).

Watching Eddie's episode is definitely my top priority...big fan! Can't tell you how much his solo stuff was in my family's LP collection. Loved it then, love it now. I know his life story is gonna be filled with tragedy. Chain smoking, drug addiction, death, and unfair treatment from the music industry. This will be one to watch. music

i picked up his greatest hits cd b/c i could just remember a song called 'if you let me' that my mother and her brothers used to rock when we were visiting my grandmother when i was a little girl. i could barely remember it, but i remembered it! and of course, i remember his pre-disco hits, 'keep on truckin' and 'boogie down'.

yes, i recall a segment on entertainment tonight towards the end of eddie's life when he was struggling with throat cancer(?) sad. sad

One of the things that I loved about him (or at least his public persona) is that he was cool, calm, and collected, & really had a grace about him that exhibited an old school kind of class. Joe Williams was the same way; just a graceful, stylish man who was measured in speech and carried himself elegantly. I miss that with a lot of contemporary performers running around in the public spectrum these days. Everybody just blurting out the first thing that comes to mind via every social network they have at their fingertips; if he had struggles, then I'm actually very thankful that they didn't play themselves out in the public eye and further burden the load he carried as a public figure.

Can you imagine Marvin, Diana, Lou and the rest of the lot trying to survive the circus that is paparazzi and internet gossip media today? I think they would have had nary a moment of peace and we would not have the gems of music that we do from them (because they would have been hounded straight to death.

I have to say his last wife came across so evil and conniving, yet seemed to escape with whatever she was doing in terms of controlling his estate. If she is a part of this, I would pretty much fall out my chair because this chick by her own action and admission, is bad news and not to be toyed with. She was caught stealing money from him before he died and he was trying to have the marriage annulled, threatened his family members with leaving them cut off, but now she carries the banner for his legacy. Lawd.

It has happened more than a few times that I've met some of our elder music legends that have these outrageously young wives, and I can usually chalk it up to them wanting to just have a little bit of love and happiness before they depart this earth. However, in most cases I have seen the women actively bringing something to the table business wise that really tries to contribute something that enhances or adds to the legacy of the man they married (in a very roll-up-your-sleeves-and-jump-into- help-make-things-happen kind of way ). I always feel bad for the ones that end up with the seemingly bad apples who apparently are just there to take. Damn shame. neutral

^ Speaking of that, Marvin would've probably retired if his music career had started in, say, 1990, then 1960 lol so yeah it would've been tough to survive in today's "here today, gone today" business. I'd be surprised if that woman's part of the episode too.

We didn't hear about any troubles back in those days because there wasn't the technology or 24/7 internet gossip tabloids to nitpick your every move or facial expression. Once upon a time whatever we knew about our celebrities was courtesy of JET, EBONY, (and if you were young) Right On and Black Beat magazines. These days if you're a young star in the internet age, somebody's snapping a cel phone pic of you in Walgreens and using the computer to zoom in on your prescription medication for depression, and posting it on Twitter, TMZ, Necole Bitchy, or Mediafakeout within the hour---all ready for public consumption to chew you up and spit you out by dinnertime. neutral

At the time of Lou's death it was reported that his wife and children would get a portion of his estate. However, just several months prior it had leaked that his former flight attendant wife not only threatened to battle the kids to make sure they got nothing ( and was caught via audio tape), but it was discovered that she had also been funneling money to a secret account, maybe +/- $200,000 from an estate that was liquid at a little over a million. Lou filed for an annulment (they had only been married a year), but was "reunited" with his wife an her lawyers in his final days/moments. I cannot remember if it was reported that his last will was unsigned or no, but on his deathbed he retracted his annulment request...I'm also not sure of what happened afterwards.

lol Cold blooded lol

but true in a lot of cases. She was 33 when they met, 34 when they married & she adopted a child, and 35 when he croaked after trying to get away from her ass. Now she's running around being the "ambassador" of his musical legacy. In terms of planning, her s*** couldn't have worked better than a tv movie or soap opera episode script on how to marry old and get rich young.

In all sincerity though, there have been some May-December romances that have had some substance to them: jazz music management pioneer John Levy (Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, Shirley Horn, Ramsey Lewis and oodles more) and his wife Devra Hall Levy come to mind... she has always had her independent things going on as an educator and jazz writer, yet that woman was also a workhorse for her husband right until he died at age 99. A very plain, non-flashy, pragmatic, hardworking woman with a sweet spirit & good head on her shoulders....who also understands jazz music. I do believe that they are one of those couples that are clearly an exception that nice young blinged out flight attendant...oh yeah, she really wants to be in the trenches with you and I'm so sure she knows every last note of your song "Dollar Green" too rolleyes lol

lol Girl, its a cold world.

My personal and professional experience, most and I said most young women mess around with old men to get out of the cold or to live a lifestyle they don't want to work for. It is what it is, twenty-is twenty and sixty is sixty. I haven't met too many women who didn't regret "going their", life is too short to live your life at a pace 40 years before you get there. wink I haven't met too many of these women who didn't have a man on side their age.

Don't get me wrong, Mr. Rawls can and did whatever he wanted with his money but don't get delusional and think some young woman is marrying you for you because 9 times out of 10 they aren't. Get Hugh Hefner realstic. Men fuck over women when they are young and women fuck over men when they get old. shrug Girl, we got "As St. Joseph Turns" on my block as I type; the chick has moved her real man into her husband's house, her husband is there and he ain't dead. His grown children from his first marriage are trippin'. popcorn I've seen this all before.

so true, so true. that's exactly why i never knew this about lou, and a whole lot of other people. the press wasn't all up in everybody's business, as a general rule. i've posted this before, but i also had no idea that natalie cole was a drug addict at the time of her release of her first album. i was a girl then, too, but i remember her clearly. now part of it may have been the fact that i was so young, but i think it's also what you posted, too.

i'm sure that if this information about lou's "wife" was presented to the court, it likely weighed in the decision in so far as the kids go. i can't imagine a court ignoring all this info about the woman's actions and intent. probate courts are court of equity, and are supposed to do what is equitable among all the parties, so i hope that they did right by his children, esp. since he had only been married to this woman so briefly.

ohmyday-um. okay, now that's REAL cold! faint

an the Hugh Hefner example, DING DING DING DING DING! He is exactly who I was thinking of when we first started talking about this. Ain't nobody walking around the Playboy Mansion with "rose colored glasses" on lol . Shoot, things are so cut and dry Hugh's world, you can be his sex toy, leave the mansion with no hard feelings (and whatever cash you made while there, but not his), and the dude will even at your wedding

with bells and whistles on like, "Hi! Champagne, anyone? wave "

I guess for him, at some point with all these broads around it's like, yeah, you go get married, so I won't be stuck taking care of your behind with you trying to get knocked up and slice up my estate. Everybody has a clear understanding of why they're there at the Mansion and life goes on merrily without any fighting or misunderstanding lol
