Jive used PA as a platform. They hired two back-up dancers and Kellz close friend was in the group too. They were never intended to blow up just to get Kellz name out there. He wrote and sang all the songs and did background vocals too. Jive thought that putting Kellz in a group would be a better way to launch his career instead of going solo first because around that time Boyz II Men and other groups were on the rise and garnered a lot of attention.
Kellz went separate ways from MGM once they signed to Jive. They didn't like that he was getting all the attention and there was some kind of dispute (I forgot what for) so Jive released them and hired 3 other people.

OK.... you win. Maybe R. Kelly DID write his own autobiography. The fact of the matter is that most who write their own "with" someone, means that the other person either ghostwrote or transcribed and cleaned up what was dictated. Case in point "The Autobiography Of Malcolm X", which was dictaed to Alex Haley by Malcolm, who was a great orator, or Tina Turner's "I, Tina" which was written "with" Kurt Loder. My point is, there are too many missing PUBLIC pieces of a puzzle that won't be mentioned. Just like MJ's autobiography, which was actually ghostwritten. There were a lot of things up to that point that were glanced over, boldfaced lied about or unmentioned altogether. I like an autobiography to be completely truthful, even in its candidness. What's private is private, but what was public or publicized (good or bad) should be at least addressed somewhat, to at least . That most likely won't be the case, due to gag orders.

Soulacoaster Details:
Act I: Back in the Day" chronicles the musician's early life on Chicago's south side with Joann Kelly, his beloved soul-singer mother. Kelly reveals the secret pain of too early, too often sexual trauma that impacted him as a child.
Plagued by a crippling learning disorder that left him unable to read or write even to this very day, young Kelly compensated for his deficiencies by perfecting his basketball skills until his dream was nearly destroyed by random gun violence. When his music teacher/mentor Lena McLin prophesied that music, not basketball, would be his destiny, he wanted to believe her.
In "Act II: Getting Busy," Kelly evolves from a Chicago drop-out to a struggling L.A. musician homeless on the sands of Venice Beach while wrestling with the hard-to-resist sexual and financial temptations that accompany sudden stardom.
Kelly's musical genius shines as he describes the genesis of hits like "12-Play," "Bump N' Grind," "I'm Your Angel," and "We Thuggin." When Kelly writes and produces for his musical hero Michael Jackson, readers learn how initially he was not credited as writer on "You Are Not Alone," and what happened when he pushed back.
"R. Kelly is R&B," says actor and singer Tyrese Gibson. "In Soulacoaster you'll discover that his genius rests in his ability to constantly push the musical envelope as he explores the intimate aspects of love and lust, pain and joy, defeat and triumph."
"Act III: In the Ring," Kelly boxes against real-life challenges including: the diss-respect of colleagues, the painful end of his 12-year marriage, and the pepper spray truth behind the "Best of Both Worlds Tour." During this time, Kelly faced down his detractors orchestrating the most prolific period of his career at The Chocolate Factory– even as his legal team advised him to slow down, hide out, and cop a plea.
By 2008, Kelly had won the hardest fight of his life and in 2010, he re-emerged on the world stage when his inspirational anthem "Sign of Victory" opened the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The beautifully designed Soulacoaster includes more than 130 color photographs that offer a truly dimensional portrait of Robert Kelly, the mama's boy, the brother, the artist, the father, and most of all, Robert the man.

See... now THAT I'd read. Regardless of my feelings about him outside of music, he IS a genius and sometimes geniuses are tortured spirits. This is something I can read and not feel like someone's just blowing smoke. Thanks for that excerpt.

Kelly is a genius? .....................at what?

I don't view him as a genius-level artist. I do think he's one of R & B's last ray of hope, a prolific albeit undisciplined tunesmith. I can't wait to read the memoir.

R Kelly's earlier career he tried to model himself after Aaron Hall & Guy. Same haircut, clothes and everything. Its funny how he soon surpassed them in talent... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Thanks 4 the laugh. If Kelly is a genius, P. Diddy is Pavarotti.

Robert's catalog is a testament to his standing power as both writer and performer. Even when he's off his game, he outpaces the competition. That's a true artist.

Very true!!!These people here are just judging him by his demons. Just like like the public judged MJ by his legal trouble. The R's catalog of hits passes everyone in his generation. Even MJ knew that. At one point you couldn't turn the radio on without hearing a song he wrote or was singing.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

It is insulting 2 music 2 call Kelly a genius. Sorry.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's neither insulting nor wrong to question the ''genius'' label some have placed upon him. The back and forth becomes rather boring after awhile. My goal is to keep focusing on the memoir itself.

He's a musical genius and this a fact. We get it, you don't like him. Get out and move on already. It's redundant now.

He didnt say he didnt like him but just not deserving to be called genius. That word is thrown around to loosely. R. Kelly is a very talented dude and I like him but I wouldnt call him a genius either. Just because his music is a notch better than his peers doesnt mean he is.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
My opinion is based on Gray's posting pattern in R. Kelly threads.
People don't refer to R. Kelly as a musical genius because his music is better than his peers. It has more to do with the fact that he's a savant.

I can't believe u wouldn't after he wrote one of Ur idol's MJ biggest hits. Even though I only reserve the word "genius" for Prince... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! He wrote one song for MJ (which by the way is a weak track compared to the others on HIStory) and you think he's "genius"?
He's a great songwriter though, but not a "genius".
To me, the definition of genius = Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince.
In that order.
The salvation of man is through love and in love. - Dr. V. Frankl
"When you close your heart, you close your mind." - Michael Jackson (Man In The Mirror) "I don't need anger management, I need people to stop pissing me off"
