Shalamar- Dead Giveaway.

Love this track. Love the New Wave influence. Love Jeffrey's hair. Love Jody's look. Love that you can kinda see the tension going on within the group because Jeffrey and Jody weren't speaking to Howard during the video shoot.

Apparently, Howard's ego was out of control and he was treating Jody and Jeffery really badly.

They talked about it on their episode of Unsung.

I remember watching MTV in the summer of '83 and I was shocked when this video came on.At that time, there weren't alot of black artists on MTV (besides Michael Jackson and Prince) so it was quite a surprise to see Shalamar. This song has a pop/New Wave feel to it.

It's kinda sad the way things fell apart just as they were experiencing their greatest crossover success."Dead Giveaway" got alot of MTV exposure and did well on the pop charts.Things got so bad that Jeffrey and Jody didn't even appear in the next video "Over And Over" confused

Great song but it was definitely the beginning of the end of the group not only because of the group splitting up afterwards, but they had also lost that hot Solar sound they previously had.

As far as I'm concerned, once Jody and Jeffrey left,Shalamar was over.I never liked the 'new' version of Shalamar with Howard,Micki Free and that other chick. It just wasn't the same.

Me neither. "Dancing In The Sheets" was OK but everything else was just bland. And "Games", while it was simply decent, was totally away from the previous group's sound. But then again, it was the late 80s by then and if Jody and Jeffery had still been there, it would have probably been bland also because of the era.

Jody's solo career kicked ass that no one should have looked at Shalamar again after lol

That's because that gorgeous Andre was behind it making it sound great, especially on that first album. The second album was so-so and the albums after that, probably after Andre was gone, were barf.

Usually when a female kicks ass, a man is somewhere around calling the shots. Jody had Andre, Donna Summer had Georgio Moroder, Vanity/Apollonia 6 had Prince, The Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie had Rick James. Teena was still decent after Rick James but the funk was gone which is the most important thing. I know it sounds sexist but females on their own don't usually throwdown as hard as men. They usually want to do some dull "meaningful" music. lol However, Bernadette Cooper from Klymaxx and who was also behind Madame X, could jam her ass off just as hard as any man could. Now, that was a bad girl right there.

I remember that first album that the 'new' Shalamar released....1984's 'Heartbreak. It was such a dud.The two singles "Amnesia" and "My Girl Loves Me" were WEAK compared to the classic Shalamar singles of the early 80s.Even Howard knew it wasn't working: he soon left for a solo career lol

No one has mentioned Leon Sylvers! eek

He had A LOT to do with their sound up to this final album with the original line up. "over and over" is a classic, and I like the title track "the look" produced by the legendary Stanley Clarke. After the break up and re-org, new producers came in and it was never the same.

Hell yeah Andre was gorgeous lol but you know what they also say about how behind every successful man there's a woman....I'm sure Prince and Sheila E. had some koo koo time in the studio too if you know what I mean lol and that led to great music for both wink

I love Friends but because Heartbreak had such strong new wave influnces I love that album more. Great combo of pop, r&b and new wave! Love Micki Free's vibe in the band. He brought some rock to the table too.

After "The Look", I lost interest. "Friends" is my favorite Shalamar album hands down.
