bumping Shalamar's 'Dont Try To Change Me' right now. Jody rocked that song on lead vocals.

Shalamar and its production teams put together a very nice long

streak of quality R&B/funk. Anyone who genuinely appreciates

this type of music is probably quite thankful for that

streak and all people involved. Dead Giveway clearly continued that quality streak of songs.

As a side observation, it seemed that Howard was on his way to

Luther or Teddy Pendergrass level top R&B & occassional pop success

when the Howard Hewitt album and several singles conquered

the R&B chart in 1990 (even a successful duet with

Anita Baker!). Maybe he was a victim of the 90's youth movement in the R&B industry.

"Don't Try To Change Me" is my favorite song off the Friends album, but The Look is my favorite album by Shalamar.

Jody's solo career kicked ass that no one should have looked at Shalamar again after lol

That's because that gorgeous Andre was behind it making it sound great, especially on that first album. The second album was so-so and the albums after that, probably after Andre was gone, were barf.

Usually when a female kicks ass, a man is somewhere around calling the shots. Jody had Andre, Donna Summer had Georgio Moroder, Vanity/Apollonia 6 had Prince, The Mary Jane Girls and Teena Marie had Rick James. Teena was still decent after Rick James but the funk was gone which is the most important thing. I know it sounds sexist but females on their own don't usually throwdown as hard as men. They usually want to do some dull "meaningful" music. lol However, Bernadette Cooper from Klymaxx and who was also behind Madame X, could jam her ass off just as hard as any man could. Now, that was a bad girl right there.

I still have the 1987 Circumstantial Evidence album with the all new lineup. boxed Bernadette Cooper produced one song on it which no surprise was the funkiest and best song on the album:

Someone told Howard once he was cute and he never got over himself, punk ass. How ironic, his career went no where quick... after Shalamar. Loved, this group it's too bad they couldn't keep those egos and check.

I really never thought about that but your are right Soul. "Shalamar II" music was by no means on par with the original group but it would've at least kept people from comparing the two.

Technically, Howard, Jody, & Jeffrey aren't the original group. Shalamar's 1st album was session singers. Jody & Jeffrey came in on the 2nd album, and Howard on the 3rd.

The "Shalamar" on the first album wasn't a real group, just studio singers, no different than Stars On 45, who used to release albums of medleys of hit songs. A group was put together for performances (Gary Mumford, Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel) after the title track of the debut album Uptown Festival became a hit, but Jody & Jeffrey aren't on the album although there is a painting on the front cover with them on it. The main lead on the second album was Gerald Brown.

This is the 1st album, except for one song (You Know) which wasn't on Youtube.

This was a B-side of Uptown Festival and not on the album.

Which album was "Take That from The Bank" from? U can clearly hear Jody's vocals on that song..

That's the second album Disco Gardens, which is Gerald Brown, Jody, & Jeffrey. I posted the debut and second albums above.

This is the "original" Shalamar, the one that was put together, not the singers from the Uptown Festival album. They are Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Watley, & Gary Munford.

This is the version on the 2nd album, who actually sing on the songs: Jeffrey, Jody, Gerald Brown

Gerald was also in the earlier group Soul Train Gang:

Jeffrey and Jody were dancers on Soul Train before joining Shalamar. So were a couple of members of the later girl group The Good Girls.

Does Jeffrey actually sing on any of the songs? Like on "Take that to the bank" is he doing any of those parts like "Keep building, keep saving..."?

And what about pop along kid? Is he singing the falsetto leads?

Usually the falsetto vocals were Jeffrey, like on Girl and Make That Move. He's also the main lead on Pop Along Kid.

I wondered about that but the few live tracks you never really hear him. There's a live version of "night to remember" and I can't hear him at all. Jermaine Stewart is actually doing BGs.

Historically, there were several "incarnations"...but for us Shalamar fanatics, it's like Silverchild said on Cinnamon's "Recommend Me Some Shalamar" thread....

If you spin "Three For Love", "Friends", and "The Look" back-to-back---THAT's the only "real" Shalamar. Total triple threat.

Funny--right before this thread was posted I was watching Jody Watley's "Unfiltered" response to the Unsung Shalimar episode. An interesting additional perspective from Jody and Gerald, whatever your opinion of them personally...
