The Monkees have been one of the world’s most enduring rock and pop acts of all time. Since their beginnings in 1966, their television show, multiplatinum albums, hit singles and concert tours truly made The Monkees one of the most colossal stories in the music business. In 1969, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz went back to the studio as a trio this time and recorded the classic Instant Replay album. Noted for their hit single "Tear Drop City", this masterwork also found The Monkees reuniting with the production team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart for several of the tracks as well as previous team Monkees writers like Carole King and Neil Sedaka, and highly touted producers like Bones Howe (The Association/Tom Waits) and Shorty Rogers and resulted in some of the finest collaborations ever with this superstar act. Instant Replay also offered the first look at Michael Nesmith’s experimental and groundbreaking recording sessions in Nashville as well as solid compositions from all three Monkees.

Opening up with the pop rocker "Through The Looking Glass," Micky Dolenz is on top of his game vocally with a brilliant background of horns, Bobby Hart on piano and guitar work by legends Keith Allison (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and Gerry McGee (The Ventures/John Mayall). A major fan favorite, this classic was performed at many of the reunion concerts over the years. The late great Davy Jones belts out another Boyce and Hart classic with the haunting ballad "Don’t Listen To Linda." The tune truly resonated with the fans back then and continues to be one of the more appreciated classics in his long list of time tested Monkees favorites. Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s "I Won’t Be The Same Without Her" features a strong vocal performance by Michael Nesmith and the stunning guitar work of both Monkees’ Peter Tork and Glen Campbell. A real summer time feeling song, this track would be a nice bridge to Micky Dolenz’s orchestral masterpiece "Just A Game."

It is no secret that Nesmith was a fan of country music, but also lauded as one of the first pioneers of the country rock genre, not only with his contributions to the earlier Monkees’ recordings as far back as "Papa Gene’s Blues," even for other noted artists like Linda Ronstadt for whom he penned her first smash single "Different Drum." For the Instant Replay album, Nesmith ventured to Nashville’s RCA Studios and cut "Don’t Wait For Me," the first released tune from his now famous Nashville sessions. With the fusion of country studio players and the voice and guitar of Michael Nesmith, The Monkees again were on the forefront of this new genre and would continue with this groundbreaking sound ever more so into future classics like The Monkees Present.

As the '60s would come to a close, Davy Jones would also contribute his major impact on the generation with his truly hip and psychedelic masterpiece "You And I." Noted for its hard rock opening to side two, the track also features the stunning lead guitar textures of Neil Young who recently departed with The Buffalo Springfield. More favorites like Nesmith’s "While I Cry" is one of the artist’s finest compositions of the era. With Mike’s beautiful acoustic guitar work and help from friends like Harry Nilsson, this ballad would truly become one of the more enduring songs from this 1969 classic Monkees album.

Neil Sedaka and Carol Bayer Sager contribute one of the classiest Monkees ballads ever with "The Girl I Left Behind Me." Once again, the late great Davy Jones provides a superstar vocal second to none, with a soulful orchestra fill and band setting featuring the production and skillful piano work of Neil Sedaka, while Micky Dolenz would close out the album with his classic "Shorty Blackwell." The whimsical tale of Micky’s cat and a nod to his friends The Beatles’ "A Day In The Life," "Shorty Blackwell" would take almost a year to record and feature a bevy of the original wrecking crew of Hollywood musicians like drummer Jim Gordon (Eric Clapton/Traffic), Tommy Tedesco on guitar and even his sister Coco Dolenz on vocals. This track along with the other eleven tunes make this one of the more enduring and loved albums in the superior catalog of Monkees classics.

The Monkees Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. on LP

After making most of Headquarters on their own, the Monkees broadened their outlook for their fourth album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., bringing in select session players to assist them in the recording. This album marked several changes for the group, the most immediately noticeable being Mike Nesmith’s increased vocal contributions. He sings lead on five of the album’s tracks, while Mickey Dolenz, the band’s previously dominant lead vocalist, sang only three. But what a trio of tunes! Mickey memorably voiced “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” another hit from the pens of Goffin & King and one with surprisingly sharp social commentary. Climbing to #3 on the pop charts, it featured a blazing, “Paperback Writer”-style guitar riff that fit seamlessly alongside the other rock hits of the day. The single’s B-side, “Words,” also with a Dolenz lead vocal, became a hit as well.

Beyond his voice, Dolenz significantly contributed to the sessions by bringing a Moog synthesizer into the studio, one of the first twenty ever produced. This made Pieces one of the first, perhaps THE first, rock album to include the Moog. It was featured to great effect on Mickey’s third lead vocal track, “Daily Nightly.” This adventurous spirit proved contagious, making Pieces one of the most fully-realized albums in the group’s career. In addition to recording songs written by their usual songwriters, songs from up and coming pop composers like Harry Nilsson, Michael Martin Murphy and Jeff Barry were also included.

As previously mentioned, Nesmith stepped to the vocal fore on this release, notably on the soaring Mann/Weill composition “Love is Only Sleeping.” A hypnotic song in trippy 7/4 time, it is one of the Monkees’ finest recorded moments. Originally intended to be a single, it remains one of their most admired album cuts and was featured in three separate episodes of the television show. Another Nesmith-led track, the country rock showcase “What Am I Doing Hangin’ Round?,” delightfully foreshadowed the direction he would later take on his solo recordings with the First (and Second) National Band. The album’s closer, “Star Collector,” is a decidedly adult take on the subject of groupies and an indication that the band had grown weary of squeaky clean, bubblegummed themes.

The album’s title refers to the astrological signs of the four members. Since both Nesmith and Davy Jones were Capricorns (and both share a December 30th birthdate), the “& Jones Ltd.” tag was added to avoid confusion. The album’s front cover artwork, an illustration by Bernard Yezsin, features four blank-faced band figures staring out over a sea of colored flowers, with the Monkees’ logo half-hidden among the flora. An apparent homage to the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band released earlier that year, it was another deliberate signal that the Monkees were a real band, ready to be judged amongst their peers.

Now, thanks to this sparkling Sundazed reissue, you may join the jury, too. Pressed on high definition vinyl and sourced from the original Colgems analog master tapes, the songs practically leap from the deep grooves straight to your ears. Also included are two bonus tracks from the album’s recording sessions: “Goin’ Down (previously unissued alternate mix)” and “Daily Nightly (previously unissued alternate mix).”

Al Green Get's Next To You on LP

Born April 13, 1946 in Forest City, AR, Al Green began singing in his family’s gospel group. His distinctive vocal talent and extraordinary ability to master pop, R&B, and gospel genres has enabled him to become an international superstar. Not only is he Hi Records’ most awarded singer/songwriter, but in a phenomenal career spanning more than thirty years, he's charted six #1 hits and has been inducted into the prestigious Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Originally released in 1971, Al Green Get's Next To You was his first major release and it features a killer selection of raw Memphis soul. The formula for his string of subsequent hits is firmly in place and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in the sympathetic production handled here by the great Willie Mitchell.

It's hard to imagine how anyone could have come up with a better showcase for Al's amazing voice. Proof of this can be heard on the record's great Green originals "All Because," "I'm A Ram," "You Say It" and the classic "Tired of Being Alone" as well as on the covers like "Driving Wheel," "Can't Get Next To You" and "Light My Fire."

Phyllis Hyman's debut album received it's first reissue through Unidisc and it sounded so flat like the Unidisc reissue of "This Is Your Life". A few years later, The Right Stuff gave Phyllis' debut a stateside reissue with liner notes by David Nathan. I purchased the disc and it turned out the remastering sounded no better than the Unidisc release.

It's going to be interesting to hear what FTG is going to be able to do with some of these upcoming 70's Melba Moore reissues. I believe she recorded several of those albums with Buddah Records.

I have "This Is Your Life" on pre-order and I will let everyone know how it sounds together with the 2 Roy Ayers cds on Columbia.Sony Japan is yet to disapoint me so I have no doubt that they will do a great remastering job.

As a example the kashif twofer which was released by Super-Bird in the uk compared to Sony Japan cd versions,imvho the Jap cds sounds so much more powerful and clear without being over-compressed at all.

I also just received 2 Al Jarreau( `80&`81) cds from Japan and I think that this is the first time that they have been remastered and they sound absolutely excellent.

Definietly not cheap but worth every penny.

I fell out with Superbird Records after recently buying the twofer they released of Regina Belle's first two albums. It had lots of bonus tracks but all of them were vinyl rips!!!! FTG is reissuing Belle's first album later this year and they are guarentting the bonus tracks will be from the master tapes.

Unreleased soundtrack album of an aborted film project, produced 1958 by Sandro Bocola and Dennis Bailey in Paris. Excellent hard bop and modern jazz session featuring Donald Byrd (trumpet), Barney Wilen (tenor saxophone), Jimmy Gourley (guitar), Walter Davis (piano), Doug Watkins (bass) and Al Levitt (drums). “Jazz in Camera – Bande 1-6″, transferred and mastered from unique transcription discs (acetates), recently discovered in the estate of Barney Wilen as only remaining source. Lost “nouvelle vague” soundtrack with a combination of true jazz legends, finally released after more than 50 years, including original session photos by the producers.

Paris in the late fifties had become the Mecca of modern jazz. Among other international stars such as Lester Young, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Oscar Pettiford, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers played in jazz clubs such as the Chat qui pèche, the Club Saint Germain and the Blue Note. Miles Davis recorded the soundtracks for several films in Paris with musicians like Barney Wilen, and Duke Ellington performed in the city with his “Famous Orchestra”.

Shortly after the start of a multi-year sojourn in Paris, I designed the project of an avantgarde jazz film in 1958 together with my friend Dennis Bailey, as a modern version of the legendary short film Jamming the Blues with Lester Young, with a group of musicians in a recording studio who produced a record. We had planned to first record the soundtrack. Then the musicians should be filmed in a studio with multiple cameras, as they repeat their original sound recording in a kind of playback. The resulting footage was then alienated in colour, as rhythmic montage cut to the original soundtrack.

After I had found a sponsor in one of my clients, who would finance the project, I put a little band together with the help of my friend Barney Wilen, which ultimately included the musicians Donald Byrd (tp), Walter Davis (p) Jimmy Gourley (g ), Al Levitt (dr), Doug Watkins (b) and Barney Wilen (ts). Boris Vian, who held a senior position at the record company Phillips, provided the recording studio where we met the musicians in July 1958 for the recording of the soundtrack. It should start with a quick piece, followed by a slow blues, and eventually followed by another quick piece, A Night in Tunisia.

After several test runs, during which we made a series of preparatory photographs, the soundtrack of the planned film was recorded. Now we could start with the first shooting for which we had won the famous cameraman Raoul Coutard. Unfortunately, the unexpected bankruptcy of the sponsor François Peyron finished our project. The laboratory, whose bills we could not afford to pay, refused to deliver us the previously developed film material and the musicians turned back to their own affairs. The only thing we had were the shellac records of the soundtrack, of which Dennis and I kept one copy to listen to them from time to time for our pleasure.

As Patrick Wilen worked up the musical legacy of his late father this year, he came across the soundtrack of the aborted project Jazz in camera at my place, which he, after more than fifty years, now makes accessible to the public for the first time on this CD and LP in collaboration with the Berlin based label Sonorama Records.

Soundway set sail for Colombia once again, delving deeper into the South American country’s rich musical past. Boasting 55 tracks spread over two CDs and two triple LPs, ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’ is Soundway’s definitive guide to the origins of Colombian cumbia and porro and the result of five years pain staking re-search by Will ‘Quantic’ Holland.

Disc 1 tells the story of some the earliest Colombian cumbia recorded, a genre that captured a nation, spreading from its birthplace on the Caribbean coast in land to central Colombia and the capital Bogota. Disc 2 sees the evolution of cumbia. Greats of Colombian music like Alberto Pacheco, Toño Fernández & Anibal Velasquez brought the music forward, bringing new influences and instruments to the genre. What had once been considered the music of the underclasses had risen up as the new sound of a nation.

After five years of becoming slowly submerged in Colombian musical culture, learning the accordion, setting up a band and a studio, and scouring the country in search it’s recorded legacy, Will ‘Quantic’ Holland (Quantic Soul Orchestra & Quantic y su Combo Barbaro) has compiled the fruits of his labour into this unique compilation that tells the story of cumbia in the years of the phonograph record’s supremacy. Along with good friend and head of Soundway Records, Miles Cletet, Will Holland has condensed hundreds of 78s, 45s and LPs into just over two and a half hours of the finest Colombian cumbia.

Both vinyl editions come with a bonus track and are limited to 1500 copies.

Yeah,they released a ton of albums without ever reaching the success that they had in late 1977,when "You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On)" reached Number One on the R&B charts.1983's "He's A Pretender" was a minor hit,though.

According to the liner notes, Motown expected the group to be the new Supremes. As a matter of fact, their first album was released the same year The Supremes officially disbanded. Other than "Turn Me Off", I never heard any of their other music. Most of the songs on this retrospective are pretty darn good. One of the girls sounds so much like Natalie Cole to me. As a matter of fact, when the song first came out, I thought "Turn Me Off" was Natalie Cole. It was years before I found out different.

Not sure why Motown choose not to put any muscle behind them. Great vocal group.
