'80s Classic of the Day: "Xanadu" - Olivia Newton-John & ELO The film was a flop, but the soundtrack was a huge success. I know there are people that hate it (how?!?), but this song is an infectious piece of pop perfection. Give it up for Jeff Lynne, ONJ, and "Xanadu"!

Big fan of both Jeff and Olivia
But I could never muster the courage to watch more than 5 minutes of the movie whenever I caught it on TV

In the second year of my Masters Program in Spiritual Psychology, we created something called the History of Loving. The philosophy of this project is to consider the major relationships in your life and write about them from the standpoint of what this relationship has taught you. I wrote letters to my family and I chose songs that best represented my feelings towards them.
I chose this song for my sister Natalie We were kids when this came out and we watched it a million times.
a place, where nodoby dared to go the love that we came to know, they call it Xanadu
And now, open your eyes and see that what we have made is real
We are in Xanadu

Ya'll shouldn't be embarrassed. I paid money to see it in a movie theater when it came out! The best scene in the movie is Olivia Newton John's song and dance number with Gene Kelly. Class... Oh, yeah, gotta mention the musical number by the Tubes also--really enjoy that one. I like the "Suddenly" and "All Over The World" sequences the best In many ways, this film is sorta like a prelude to the MTV video explosion which began a year later. It's really just a collection of lavish music videos thrown together, with a little dialogue and a flimsy storyline.

I once did a thread comparing/contrasting this movie with Graffiti Bridge there are some weird similarities.
Both movies feature a female lead character who isn't "real".....in GB,Aura is an angel. In Xanadu,Olivia Newton John is a "muse".
Both movies are really just a collection of music videos, strung together by a weak storyline and lame dialogue.
Much of the action in both films take place in a disco/nightclub setting.
At the end of both movies, the "unreal" female lead characters return to heaven (or wherever it is that they came from, lol).Their mission is complete.

Loved Xanadu when I was a kid. The soundtrack is still awesome! Love "Magic", "Danin' (w/ The Tubes)", "Don't Walk Away" and, of course, Xanadu the song.
BTW... Olivia had several more hits after "Physical". They include; "Make A Move On Me", "Heart Attack", "Twist of Fate" and "Soul Kiss".

The soundtrack is timeless, pure pop perfection As for the movie, I’m not ashamed to publicly admit my love for it. Xanadu is a classic, should be considered as one of the great movies of all time. Right up there with West Side Story, Singing in the Rain and Breakin.

Here's another movie by Olivia called Toomorrow: You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
