My personal favorite is Highway 61 & i think it has everything that make's Bob for a starter to wink

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

"Street Legal", i like this one the best for some reason, just a fun album to listen to.

We're here, might as well get into it.

It depends

if you want a high quality latter-day album, I'd suggest Love&Theft or Modern Times

Blood on the Tracks (his best 70s album)

Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (his best pure folk album, 63 I think)

Highway 61 or Blonde on Blonde (his best rock albums, 65-66)

John W. Harding or Nashville Skyline (his best country albums, 67-69)

Hmm... maybe it's best to buy a Dylan Tribute album.... one where he doesn't sing.

I would start with:

Blood on the Tracks and Blond on Blond. Both are masterpieces. His songwriting skills are second to none. Bob delivers true passion on every song.

Bob is the greatest lyricist of our time. No doubt about that.

I would recommend Greatest Hits, vol. 2. You get a nice sampling of all of his sixties work, both the early folk stuff and the later electric stuff. It's a little redundant today with things like Biograph (1985), The Essential Bob Dylan (2000) and Dylan (2007) but as an introduction it is still excellent plus there are several exclusive tracks on it that you will probably want to hear.

Whoops, I didn't notice the qualifier about no compilations. In that case I would go with any of the usual suggestions:

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

Highway 61 Revisited

Blonde on Blonde

Blood on the Tracks

My first one was Highway 61 Revisited and I was HOOKED! Hadn"t experienced that since Lovesexy, Stand or What's Going on. I bought it because it had Like a Rolling Stone and Ballad of a Thin Man on it and you can't go wrong with those, but the rest is just as good. Rockin an Rollin like the Stones and then some. Lyrics that seem to make no sense but make all the more sense because of it. A bald wig for Jack the Ripper. God talking to Abraham. Einstein disguised as Robin Hood.

Dylan is one of those men who can create a world of their own within their music, just like Prince. headbang

After this one there will be no turning back. You'll be a Bobcat, a Bobster, a Bobologist.
