being from seattle and having studied the other rock greats closely before and after that, i just never really thought much of these guys. Not jealous, not hateful, just pretty indifferent really. said it many times, but once you've been raised off Prince, Michael and Bruce, then study elvis, little richard, chuck berry etc.., etc.., it doesn't do much for you seeing a bunch of dirty kids screaming.

I'm somewhat sympathetic to your way of thinking, after the early nineties things swung much too far in the direction of overly earnest/serious rock bands where no one seemed like they were having much fun and many of the later grunge/alternative bands, say from 1994-present, just weren't that good but I think mainstream rock music really needed the jolt that alternative music gave it. I don't necessarily believe it is fair to blame the early grunge/alternative bands for killing rock, I would blame the crappy bands that have since failed to deliver interesting music, regardless of the genre.

He could barely string a sentence together on Howard Stern back in November, callers later onto the show were complaining about how long he took to assemble his thoughts.

There was a covers album last year as well. I like it, despite some trite choices.

And Rodeo - I don't think you'll ever be convinced otherwise, but I think saying bands like these killed Rock 'n Roll is like saying XYZ killed the alphabet. A lot of these bands tagged as grunge show an amazing degree of diversity and talent. Sure, it isn't 'titties n' beer' rock, and they tended to ape Page more than Plant (like their odious predecessors), but the music acquits itself nicely if you want to enjoy it...

I agree that it was an end to rock & roll that came out of the 60's and peaked in the 70's, became a self-parody in the 80's...

And I think it was telling that 2 very different bands in the 90's who were informed of their predecessors, self-conscious of what rock had become, both with this sense of doing things with a degree of integrity that had been missing from rock for a long time, produced radically different outcomes. Or ends.

But there might be hope - throw on just about any PJ live show and you might be converted .

Please Nivana hands down. Kurt didn't ruin rock n roll, rock n roll tried to become kurt. Dont blame him. I didnt much care for Nivana till In Utero which is still an amazing album.

Huh, that seems rather silly. If you look at the rock scene circa 1960-1963 things were looking very dire for rock and roll. Many of the great rock artists of the fifties were either dead, had radically cleaned up their sound or were being ignored. Worse, very few exciting new acts had emerged. The charts were being dominated by very safe and clean teen idols. There was some merit to those acts but they were essentially a neutured version of fifties rock and roll. I am far from a Beatles fanboy and I don't believe they deserve all of the credit, there was an extremely fertile scene in the United Kingdom and if not for the dozens of bands that followed after the Beatles there would have been no British Invasion, but surely they were the spark that ignited the fire. After 1964 there was an absolute explosion of new rock and roll acts, most of which were heavily inspired by the Beatles.

Obviously it is impossible to know what would have happened without the Beatles and, again, I want to stress that I don't think they deserve all of the credit but after they broke America rock and roll inarguably became much more popular and interesting.

The industry always stay trying to clone a motherfucker. Then they wonder why people don't buy the doppleganger's records? Rock and roll ain't dead, it's just that the industry don't know how to promote it because they stay busy trying to make other forms of music the norm here.

But I loooove Alice In Chains (Layne, RIP...). Enjoyed their last album, "Black Gives Way to Blue". The title track that Elton John & Lisa Coleman played piano and vibraphone on was pretty good.
