He obviously said this back when anyone still cared about Toni Braxton

or when he was actually independent, instead of using newspapers and chain stores as stand-ins for a record label.

Thats still independent. He's still the one calling the shots and still the one making the money out of those deals.

Change it one more time..

She doesn't have to. That reality show Braxton Family Values put her back in the spotlight again. Now she talking about leaving it...I think that is a bad idea. Even though she doesn't like it invading her privacy. That is the way to go now. I mean it even helped my favorite rapper TI.

But Toni Braxton didn't have sucess with dance music, so why keep doing it? Her fans don't like it, and it's not winning her any new fans either.

Well I cant speak for her fanbase because I've never considered myself a fan, but the ONLY reason I knew about her last album was hearing the remix of break my heart (or whatever that songs called) at a club and then later seeing the video for it at another club that played videos.

Change it one more time..

The benefit of going indie is an artist doesn't have to reach the platinum threshold to be a success. A stream of small sales can add up to profitability when there's no middleman.

I'm pretty sure he told her all that like 5-7 years ago, but how many artists have killed their careers trying to do what Prince does?

I don't know.. but Toni doesn't have to worry about that. She killed her career with More Than A Woman. Oddly, it got good reviews and went Gold, but it had no hits, and she's had little success since then.

I see no hate for Toni in here. I see me commenting that I don't like her recent albums, and that they've been commercial failures relative to her early albums.

An apt answer because I haven't seen any labels falling over themselves trying to snag Prince for another one-album deal.

How U know that?? Prince doesn't need a label. He can get any deal he wants. They just have to offer him what he is worth...

I just cant sometimes with people on here...... Like I said Orgers will be Orgers.... Your breaking the ten commandments for having an "opinion". razz

I havent really read any hate on here and I dont think anyone has said anything that nots true. Regardless whether Toni goes Indie or Commercial her success will never be on the level of how it was in the 90s and THATS OKAY. I dont see anything wrong with people pointing that fact out. Its perfectly relevant to the discussion and in saying that, I dont think people are trying to bash her either. Toni has a big fanbase so she is going to have interest whatever route she goes.

I love Toni and look forward to her new material.

So far the songs Ive heard recently I was not feeling at all... and if the new album sounds anything like the songs Ive heard, I'm definitly passing on this one.

See the best thing about being indie is that you can make your own money. Any sales come off your single or album, YOU GET DIBS. smile

this is why i dont understand alot on this forum. We praise up and down about a new artist taking indie route, or Ani DiFranco or MeShell, or whomever the forum "darling" may be, but there are tons of artists doing it like this, and now another and yet when you say so and so has a new record on their own label, we get replys like "has been" "no one cares" etc.... Well u really cant have it both ways, Toni Braxton going indie is just not going to attract attention like she did with a label and 20 years ago, i really wish alot on this forum could let the 90's go already and its sales numbers. I can tell you know that she will make just as much money and more selling 50,000 records than she will selling 3 million, and thats not just because of her bad business, that goes for any artists going indie, you basically make the lionshare, we know the math and preach it, and yet when someone does it, we talk about the past sales and how the artist wont acheive record company numbers from 2 decades ago.

I certainly didn't call Toni a has-been. I just hope she keeps her financial house in order. As aside from her mounting medical bills, she's admitted to losing her fortune because of poor financial decisions. If going indie puts more cash in the bank, good for her. smile

I just looked the album up on Wikipedia and it said it's gonna be a double album eek . I can't imagine the album being successful.. she hasn't really had a big hit since 2000. I mean, she might make more money by being independant, but I don't think it will sell very well. I think the only chance she has of being big again is if she goes back to the R&B/AC ballads. I don't think she's ever had big success as a dance artist, and I don't much care for her that way either..

She should reunite with Babyface, let him produce her album, and get back to the soulful sounds of her first two albums.I think she lost alot of her core audience with these recent albums.

That's what she needs to do, cuz that mess/single she just released, no. neutral

I don't think Toni can afford BabyFace anymore. U have to pay to get producers & they don't come cheap. Plus she is independent. So she has to get who she can afford..

They do have one very important commonality: Toni declared herself broke in 2010, and Whitney reportedly died broke, despite the platinum comeback album.

I don't believe that for a second. Any debts she would've had surely would have been paid off by her tour, which grossed around 40 mil.
